第 24 章 ——《上奏》

以下文书藏于长林皇家档案馆,编号天玄三年第四千七百一十一奏,朱砂院主之朱砂印钤于第三纸之足,黑帷车书记官之副印钤于第一纸之角。


谨呈陛下,河底玄龙之子,愿陛下圣寿延绵九九千年,愿陛下之影即长城之影,陛下之息即大河之息。

臣,朱砂院苏文岩,谨于天玄三年十一月十八日清晨,灯火第三刻,由铁门关隘下、第十军辎重队下风处之黑帷车中,伏案上奏。

臣已于昨夜二更,感得异动。

异动起于前十五夜之三更:一束魂结之干涩内重,由一候补者所承——其入毡帐未循正典,未付一名上师萨满及一头上师灵兽之应有之代价。

上师萨满已可指认。即黑旗部之妪,名蒙克达姆者,与亲王同擒于灰烬林之役第七日,禁于哨列东缘单帐毡庐共十一夜,门外有褐熊布吉尔诺颜守之——囚帐书记官之蜡板已三次分记此事。昨夜以降,妪已不在东缘。

上师灵兽已可指认。即同一头褐熊布吉尔诺颜。亦不见踪。

候补者已可指认。即此军中一人。臣尚未得其名。

臣所得者如下:彼在抽签轮值守囚之伍中。据囚帐之蜡板,囚徒拘押十一夜中,每夜灯火第三刻皆有彼之签到,每签皆有勤务官之对印。一卒,十一夜十一签,无替无换。

臣询其伍之军士:七卒之中,何以独任一卒连守十一夜之长更?答以军士之言——曰此卒乃伍中沉默之良卒,从不携粟米酒气、营妓气、勤务官车中骰子气而至炉火,长更不破其志,不似他人。「此子如产羔毡上之净铺,大人,」彼曰,「臣不予彼以彼所不能任之差。」彼目不离蜡板。

臣已读出此军士。彼之撒谎,乃第十军军士向朱砂院书记官撒谎之撒法——其所欲庇者,乃伍中一卒,一名女子。彼乃得一物而史册不肯名之之人。

车官副册之袖角,臣得一褐纸条,日期为十五日晓鼓,字迹乃军士短促之手,勤务官副签于下:腹泻。三日。东缘产羔毡。勤务官云此条系伍中弓手之名。该伍中弓手即灯火第三刻之卒。

该伍中弓手之册名为*乔家之乔彦升,于本年正月榆林点兵入册,年五十一,业果农,乔大之子,黄河之畔薄田二亩,盐华司第三县南第三溪;弟名乔安石,母卢氏*;眷属一妻、一十二岁男童。

臣已依问刑使之文牒,南遣两奏与院之外巡:拘其户。提长男与其母。搜其宅。所获悉焚。械送长林,皆钤朱砂院印。

第一驿卒昨夜二更回报,事如下:父乔彦升殁于解送途中第二日——其肺中宿疾,自永昌三年第二县盐场染来——手覆褐布,榻畔有杯,并献小祷于其祖之祖宗,仪态有南朝之民对朱砂院文牒一字不出怨言之尊严,陛下。

母现于盐叉道朱砂院车中,长城以南二百里,押解长林。童与之同。据上巡之议,童已免问刑使文牒之鞫。彼一言未发。彼曾书一函,于第二日,以一十二岁童子之手——其入村塾六月,未读完第三本蒙书——所书。

此函现置臣黑帷车之案头。臣已阅之。其辞,以稚童之手书曰:

姐姐。你出门那日起,果园里的狼影就再没回来过。从头一夜起我就在数。已经一百九十六夜了。娘吃不下饭。爹爹他——爹爹他——

未尽。上巡批于函尾:童子至第二句爹爹他便置笔不再举。

臣已置此函于案角,与漆匣并列——匣中藏臣所收之灵兽齿,一百四十三颗,按服役年序排次——今夜臣开匣,将函亦入此数。

此数现为一百四十三齿一函。

依本院取证之例,此函即臣据以索候补者之名之凭。臣将于今日午时第三刻,于第十军军官库里台上提出此索。

元帅不会给名。军士不会。其伍不会。勤务官不是可问之人。

可问者乃车官——据其自册,昨夜不在其车。臣将于今日午后讯之。彼此刻正在勤务官车之厕,患下痢,乃臣亲自布置之物——经勤务官之水盆,臣于十七夜三更钤封之,因臣二更已嗅到三更之将至。

至今夜二更,车官将给名。至三更,名将入册。至十九日晓鼓,名将置于盐叉道皇家驿卒之鞍囊中,臣之副印钤于角。至二十二日晓鼓,名将入陛下之手。至二十三日晓鼓,全家——母、童、并候补者本人,若可缉回——将立于长林公开行刑之地,依《黄简》第十九条受刑。

臣将于彼晓鼓,亲举其火。

服役十八年,臣已举火一百四十三回。第一百四十四——以一名素以四数计之人之均衡——将是钦天监星官所梦之白狼萨满。彼梦记于本年第三夜二更之御用蜡板上。臣已追此梦七年。

明日,臣得名。

愿河不止、龙不眠、皇后望路以待臣。

臣奉此奏于陛下阶前。

十八日清晨灯火第三刻,黑帷车中肃静。

橘皮色之人将笔置于笔架,于第三纸之足钤其印,循一名于自家案前十八年间叠过一百四十三回奏疏之人之熟手叠法,叠之。彼将奏疏滑入右手边之漆面小驿筒,封筒,掖入袖底,覆于心口。彼自书记官于二更交替之时所沏之青瓷盏中啜橘皮茶,置盏,微微一笑——那是一名连数三十日之牲畜、今晨终得其数之人之清浅一笑。

「狼丫头,」彼对盏中道,只一次,不再说第二回。


南去三千里,长城下二百里盐叉道上,十八日二更朱砂院车之黑暗中,一名四十六岁妇人靠墙坐于折起之毡毯上,左手握着儿子之右腕,右手扣于颈上皮绳所悬之漆筒。

筒约一指节长。与其母于十岁春耕日授彼之筒同长,亦与皮绳同长;与彼祖母于同岁授彼母之筒同长——亦即同一筒,卢氏想(此处她屏息一瞬),即彼于厨房地板与剪刀那晨亲授彼女儿之筒。筒中乃一小方折叠之褐纸。二十三日来,彼未曾取出一次。

车乃一冷暗木匣,气味是朱砂院车所载之物:缝中之松脂、轮井之陈腐草秸、门闩之铁锈,其下藏二十三日不沐之二人之贴身兽气。卢氏识得此车,犹如她识得平生每一囚笼——她亲择之乔家果园、亲择之婚配、亲择之十九年沉默——皆藉黑中摸边而知其松处。北壁有松处,一块木板因近轮井而翘起,漏入一指寒风,风上带来草原之气,淡得南人鼻舌不识。她已将儿子靠在那壁上。她亦将自己靠儿子之侧坐下,手扣其腕,面贴翘板。入车三日,她已明白此风之寒何以不令她惧:板外有狼,立于上风,狼是她家的,狼之所以来,是因为她女儿活着。

她握儿之腕,无言;童亦无言。入车第十一日彼停笔,第十二日彼停语;第十七日彼以头抵轮井之壁,闭目,两更不开。她看着他止息,犹如她曾看着丈夫之咳沉沉积十五年,每深一层她都知是何意,却无能为力——她在车之黑里许下一愿,不再以沉默失去这一个。她已以盐场之慢铁失去丈夫。她不会以此车之铁再失去儿子。所以那夜狼现身于翘板之外,她开始用最小之声,以厨房之言,与他絮叨些无关之事——三月之稻塘、群鸭之列行、新春鸭酒之杯上六岁姐姐之姿——只为在二人之间于黑里牵一缕音,让童子有可握之物,不至只剩沉默、寒冷与南行长林之火。

那夜三更交替时彼开目,以最小之声、以乔家厨房之言、以六岁新春鸭酒杯上之声,道:「娘。」

「安石。」

「狼影已自第二日起在轮井边。」

她等。「我知道。」

「他不在下风。他在上风。」

「他是。」

「娘。上风是风来之向。风在北。他在车北——风来之侧——风自草原来。」

「我知道。」

童声越发小而笃。「娘。狼影本无身。他从未有身。货郎说狼在她胸里。他说这句的口吻,与娘四岁那年问她姐姐入夜何往果园时,娘对我说话的口吻一样。娘说:在她胸里,安石。狼在她胸里。我们不说此事。我已八年不曾说。今夜我说——因为车之上风井畔之狼有身。他自第二日起即有身。而他之所以有身,娘,是因为——」彼顿一下,勉强说完。「——因为我姐姐已入她胸里之狼,狼已出她胸口,至我家车之上风一侧,井畔之狼已不再是影。他是狼。是她的狼。他是为我们而来的。」

卢氏握其腕,定其息,对着壁木以厨房之言道:「安石。坐。莫动。莫言。听。」

「是,娘。」

「井畔之狼是你姐姐的狼,仅是她的,永远是她的。他在此并不意味她在此。他在此意味她还活着。听见没有,安石?」

「是,娘。」

「他会看——犹如果园之狼看着十九年于门石上奉羊脂之女儿。他会每一更看着我们。三夜过盐叉道,我们车过南叉桥时,他将在上风——车至桥南时,狼将在草原之侧。听见没有?」

「是,娘。」

「南叉桥即是其地——三日之后——你姐姐与狼将一同立于车之上风。听见没有?」

「是,娘。」

她将声音压得更低,压到她母亲于她十岁春耕日教她肋上束布之兵卒结时所用之声:「剪刀在乔家厨房,安石。不在此车。剪刀在门槛石上,将永在那里。你姐姐到桥畔来这车时,上风有狼,身畔有人,肩上有鸟。她不会带剪刀。她将带你爹于第二日榻上手覆褐布所携之物——一个已决之人那种安静而井然之物。是你姐姐于胸中之狼旁负了十九年之物,亦是你爹携往榻上之物。听见没有,安石?」

她已携此名十九年又四月十一日,与狼同久,与契同久,她将此名缄于无声,因无声乃她可为之筑之唯一一檐。在帝国出声道此名,即将所欲焚之物递于帝国之手。她仅在一摇篮板上低声道过一次,她自己之母手与她之手同覆于木——而她母亲跟着她念道:阿苏兰,小狮子,等着——后来她便将那名折入自己胸之碗中,与狼、与草原之言、与鄂嫩河之弯、与三十一年此国——此国十五岁时将她娶下——并置一处,再未让它出过。女儿四岁夜里问起姐姐何往果园时,她未道。货郎在院中执其女之手而唇白时,她未道。点兵书吏之鼓正月里击上第三溪、而她立于厨房门前看着她唯一能为之事自展开时——剪辫、束胸、以亡夫之名遣女北行入帝国之战、远离帝国之火——她仍未道。其间她始终未道此名。此名是她从草原带来唯一一件保得周全、未曾耗散之物,留待有需之日。

此刻她道了。对着车壁之木,以厨房之言,以她母亲于她十岁春耕日所用之声:

「阿苏兰。」

她等了等,再道:「阿苏兰。来。」

第三回:「阿苏兰。来桥畔。」

车静。上风井畔之狼喘息。腕下之童不动。颈上之筒中折着褐纸方。北风——上风之风、草原之风、横亘盐叉道至铁门关之七百里——伏寂。

她闭目,睡朱砂院车中一母亲所睡之浅且短之眠,手扣儿腕,狼立上风,半更过。

它一直伏至三更交替——彼交替之时,十九日清晨,三千里以北、第三冰溪下风、长长灰脊下风之格尔帐中、黎明后灰光里,一个自上链当夜至今未曾道过身旁一步之外熟睡之男人之名的女儿,于眠中道了此名,犹如其母三千里以南对车壁之木所道:

「娘。」

一步之外之男人未醒。脚畔之狼未抬头。椽上之鸟未动。火上风口之老者呼吸如故。格尔托住此一道,此道循烟孔而出,乘高原之上风南去——十一月慢慢之草原之风,自格尔至车七百里——将女儿之一字置于盐叉道朱砂院车上风之井畔,犹如契之所传:跨白草、跨黑沙、跨黄河、跨厨房之言与草原之言、跨母女之间十八年。

上风之狼抬头,将头复落于爪上,等着。他未离车。他已等十九年。他可再等三日。

Chapter Twenty-Four

A Memorial to the Throne

The following is preserved in the imperial archive at Changlin as Memorial 4,711 of the third year of the Tianxuan reign, with the cinnabar seal of the Master of the Cinnabar Bureau at the foot of the third sheet and the secondary seal of the secretary of the black-canvas wagon at the corner of the first.


To His Imperial Majesty, the Son of the Black Dragon Beneath the River, may his reign extend to nine times nine thousand years, may his shadow be the shadow of the wall and his breath be the breath of the river.

This your servant, Su Wen-yan of the Cinnabar Bureau, writes from the black-canvas wagon at the lee of the supply-train of the Tenth Legion, at the foot of the Iron Gates pass, at the third quarter of the lamp on the morning of the eighteenth day of the eleventh month.

Your servant has, at the second watch of last night, felt the disturbance.

It arose at the third watch of the fifteenth night past: the dry interior weight of a soul-knot taken by a candidate who had not been brought to a yurt at the proper cost of a senior shaman and a senior bond-beast.

The senior shaman is identified. She is the woman called Möngke-Dam of the Black Banner clan, taken with the prince at the seventh day of the Ash Forest engagement, held eleven nights in a single felt-yurt at the eastern edge of the squad-line with the brown bear Bujir-noyon at her door — as the secretary of the prisoner-tent has confirmed in three separate notations of the wax-tablet. As of last night she is no longer at the eastern edge.

The senior bond-beast is identified. He is that same brown bear Bujir-noyon. He too is gone.

The candidate is identified. She is in this column. I have not yet recovered her name.

I have recovered this: she is in the squad-rotation that drew the prisoner. By the wax-tablet of the prisoner-tent she is signed in at the third quarter of the lamp on every one of the eleven nights of the prisoner's holding, with the orderly's counter-seal at every entry. One soldier, eleven nights of eleven, without rotation.

I asked the squad's sergeant why one soldier of seven should hold the long quiet watch eleven nights running. He gave me a sergeant's answer — that the soldier is the squad's quiet good soldier, that he never comes to the fire smelling of millet-beer or the camp's whores or the dice in the orderly's wagon, that the long quiet duty does not break him as it breaks other men. "That boy is a clean cot at the lambing-felt, sir," he said. "I do not give him any duty he cannot do." He did not lift his eyes from the wax-tablet.

I have read the sergeant. He is lying in the manner of a sergeant of the Tenth Legion lying to a Cinnabar Bureau secretary about a soldier of his squad who is a woman. He is a man who has been given a thing the chronicles will not name.

In the cuff of the wagon-master's secondary ledger I found a brown-paper slip dated the dawn-drum of the fifteenth morning, in the sergeant's clipped hand, the orderly's counter-signature beneath: Stomach-flux. Three days. Lambing-felt at the eastern edge. The orderly says the slip stands in the name of the squad-archer. The squad-archer is the soldier of the third quarter of the lamp.

The squad-archer's roll-name is *Qiao Yansheng of Qiaojia, conscripted at the Yulin muster of the first month of this year, age fifty-one, occupation orchard-keeper, son of Qiao Eldest, two mu of land at the Yellow River, third creek south of the third county of the Yan-Hua province; brother-name Qiao Anshi, mother-name Lu*; dependents, one wife, one twelve-year-old male child.

Under the inquisitor's writ I have sent two memorials south to the Bureau outriders of the directorate: Detain the household. Take the eldest male child and the mother. Search the house. Burn what you find. Bring them south to Changlin under Bureau seal.

The first courier returned at the second watch of last night, with this: the father, Qiao Yansheng, died on the second day of the household's transit — the cough in the lung he had carried since the salt-foundry at the second county in the third year of the Yongchang reign — with the brown cloth at his hand and the cup at his cot and a small prayer to his grandfather's ancestors, with the dignity, my majesty, of a southern subject who said nothing against the Bureau's writ.

The mother is at the Bureau wagon on the salt-fork, two hundred li south of the Wall, en route to Changlin. The child is with her. On the recommendation of the senior outrider the child has been spared the question of the inquisitor's writ. He has said nothing. He wrote one letter, on the second day, in the hand of a twelve-year-old who attended his village schoolroom six months and never finished the third primer.

The letter is on my table at the black-canvas wagon. I have read it. It says, in a child's hand:

Sister. The wolf-shadow at the orchard has not come back since the day you rode out. I have been counting since the first night. It has been a hundred and ninety-six nights. Mother is not eating. Father has — Father has —

It does not finish. The senior outrider has noted at the foot of it that the child set the brush down at the second Father has and did not pick it up again.

I have placed the letter at the corner of my table, beside the lacquered box where I keep the bond-animal teeth — one hundred and forty-three of them, ranked by the years of my service — and tonight I opened the box and added the letter to the count.

The count is now one hundred and forty-three teeth and one letter.

By the Bureau's protocols of evidence, the letter is the ground on which I will demand the candidate's name at the kurultai of the Tenth Legion's officers at the third hour of this afternoon.

The Marshal will not give the name. The sergeant will not. The squad will not. The orderly is not the man to ask.

The wagon-master is the man to ask — by his own ledger, which last night was not at his wagon. I will ask him this afternoon. He is presently at the latrine of the orderly's wagon with a dysentery I myself arranged, by way of the orderly's water-bowl, which I sealed at the third watch of the seventeenth night, having smelled the third watch coming at the second.

By the second watch of tonight, the wagon-master will have given me the name. By the third watch, it will be in the ledger. By the dawn-drum of the nineteenth, it will be in the imperial post-rider's saddlebag on the salt-fork, my secondary seal at the corner. By the dawn-drum of the twenty-second, it will be in your majesty's hand. By the dawn-drum of the twenty-third, the household — mother, child, and the candidate herself, if she can be retaken — will stand at the public execution-ground at Changlin under Article 19 of the Yellow Scrolls.

This your servant will, at that dawn-drum, light the fire himself.

In eighteen years of service I have lit one hundred and forty-three. The hundred-and-forty-fourth — by the symmetry of a man who has counted in fours — will be the white-wolf shaman the astrologer dreamed of, the dream he set on the imperial wax-tablet at the second hour of the third night of this year. I have been seven years on that dream.

Tomorrow I have the name.

May the river not still and the dragon not sleep and the empress watch the road for your servant.

I lay this memorial at the imperial step.

The black-canvas wagon was quiet at the third quarter of the lamp on the morning of the eighteenth day.

The orange-peel man set the brush at its rest, pressed his seal at the foot of the third sheet, and folded the memorial in the practised fold of a man who had folded a hundred and forty-three at his own table over eighteen years. He slid it into the small lacquered post-tube at his right hand and sealed the tube and tucked it inside his under-sleeve, over his heart. He drank from the porcelain cup of orange-peel tea his secretary had brewed at the changing of the second watch, and set the cup down, and smiled — the small clean smile of a man who has been counting animals for thirty days and has, this morning, been told the count.

"Wolf-girl," he said into the cup, once, and did not say it again.


Three thousand li south, on the salt-fork two hundred li below the Long Wall, in the dark inside of a Bureau wagon at the second watch of the eighteenth night, a woman of forty-six sat against the wall on a folded blanket with her left hand around her son's right wrist and her right hand at the lacquered tube on the thong at her neck.

The tube was the size of a finger-joint. It was the same size, on the same length of thong, as the tube her own mother had given her at the spring sowing of her tenth year, and the tube her grandmother had given her mother at the same age — and the same tube, Madam Lu thought (and her breath caught once), that she had given her own daughter the morning of the kitchen-floor and the shears. Inside it was a small folded square of brown paper. In twenty-three days she had not once taken it out.

The wagon was a box of cold dark that smelled of the things a Bureau wagon carries: pine-tar at the seams, old straw gone sour at the wheel-well, the iron of the door-latch, and under all of it the close animal smell of two people who had been twenty-three days without a wash. Madam Lu had learned the wagon the way she had learned every cage of her life — the orchard at Qiaojia she had chosen, the marriage she had chosen, the silence of nineteen years she had chosen — by feeling for its edges in the dark and finding where the give was. There was give in the north wall, where a board had warped from the wheel-well and let in a finger of cold air and, on it, a smell of the steppe so faint that a southern nose would have called it nothing. She had set her son against that wall. She had set herself beside him with her hand at his wrist and her face to the warped board, and three days into the wagon she had understood why the cold from it did not frighten her: there was a wolf at the other side of it, on the windward, and the wolf was hers, and the wolf had come because her daughter was alive.

She held her son's wrist and said nothing, and the boy said nothing. He had stopped writing on the eleventh day of the wagon, stopped speaking on the twelfth; on the seventeenth he had set his head to the wall at the wheel-well and shut his eyes and not opened them for two watches. She had watched him stop, the way she had once watched her husband's cough deepen across fifteen years and known each new depth for what it was and been able to do nothing — and she had made herself a promise, in the dark of the wagon, that she would not lose this one to silence. She had lost the husband to the salt-foundry's slow iron. She would not lose the boy to the wagon's. So she had begun, on the night the wolf came to the warped board, to talk to him in the smallest voice, in the kitchen-tongue, about nothing — about the rice-pond in the third month, about the way the ducks went in their line, about his sister at six over the New Year cup — to keep a thread of sound running between them in the dark so the boy would have something to hold that was not the silence and the cold and the road south to the Changlin fire.

He opened them at the changing of the third watch that night, and said, in the smallest voice, in the kitchen-tongue of Qiaojia, in the voice he had used at six over the New Year rice-cup: "Mama."

"Anshi."

"The wolf-shadow has been at the wheel-well since the second day."

She waited. "I know."

"He hasn't been at the lee. He's at the windward."

"He has."

"Mama. The windward is the side the wind comes from. The wind's at the north. He's at the north of the wagon — on the side the wind's coming from — and the wind comes off the steppe."

"I know."

His voice went small and certain. "Mama. The wolf-shadow doesn't have a body. He's never had a body. The peddler said the wolf was in her chest. He said it the way you said it to me when I was four and asked you where my sister went at night in the orchard. You said: In her chest, Anshi. The wolf is in her chest. We do not speak of it. I haven't spoken of it in eight years. I'm speaking of it now — because the wolf at the windward wheel-well has a body. He's had a body since the second day. And he's had a body, Mama, because—" He stopped, and made himself finish. "—because my sister has gone into the wolf in her chest, and the wolf has come out of her chest onto the windward side of our wagon, and the wolf at the wheel-well isn't a shadow any more. He's a wolf. He's hers. And he's here for us."

Madam Lu held his wrist and steadied her breath and said, into the wood of the wall, in the kitchen-tongue: "Anshi. Sit. Don't move. Don't speak. Listen."

"Yes, Mama."

"The wolf at the wheel-well is your sister's wolf, and no one else's, and never will be. His being here does not mean she is here. His being here means she is alive. Do you hear me, Anshi?"

"Yes, Mama."

"He will watch — the way a wolf at the orchard watches the daughter who set mutton-fat on his doorstone nineteen years. He'll watch us, every watch, and at the third night past the salt-fork, when our wagon crosses the bridge at the South Fork, he'll be at the windward — and when the wagon is on the south side of the bridge, the wolf will be on the steppe side. Do you hear me?"

"Yes, Mama."

"The bridge at the South Fork is the place — three days from tonight — where the daughter and the wolf will be at the windward of this wagon together. Do you hear me?"

"Yes, Mama."

She lowered her voice further, into the voice her own mother had used at the spring sowing of her tenth year, teaching her the soldier's knot of the binding-cloth at the rib: "The shears are at the kitchen at Qiaojia, Anshi. Not in this wagon. They're at the threshold-stone of the door, and there they will stay. Your sister will come to the wagon at the bridge with a wolf at the windward and a man at her side and a bird at her shoulder. She won't have shears. She'll have what your father had when he set the brown cloth at his hand on the cot the second day — the quiet, ordered thing of a person who has decided. What your sister has carried at the wolf in her chest nineteen years, and what your father carried to the cot. Do you hear me, Anshi?"

"Yes, Mama."

She held his wrist and did not move, and did not open the tube, and did not — as she had not since the morning of the kitchen-floor — say the name aloud.

She had carried the name nineteen years and four months and eleven days, the same as the wolf, the same as the bond, and she had carried it in silence because silence had been the only roof she could build over it. To say it aloud in the empire was to hand the empire the thing it would burn. She had said it once, low, into a cradle-board, with her own mother's hands on the wood beside hers — and her mother had said it after her, Arsulan, little lion, wait — and then she had folded the name into the bowl of her own chest beside the wolf and the steppe-tongue and the bend of the Onon and thirty-one years of a country that had taken her at fifteen, and she had not let it out again. Not when the daughter asked, at four, where her sister went in the orchard at night. Not when the peddler took the daughter's hand in the yard and went white at the lips. Not when the conscription-clerk's drum came up the third creek in the first month and she stood at the kitchen door and watched the only thing she could do unfold, which was to cut the braid and bind the chest and send the daughter north under a dead man's name, into the empire's war, away from the empire's fire. She had not said the name through any of it. The name had been the one thing of the steppe she had kept whole, intact, unspent, against the day it would be needed.

She said it now. Into the wood of the wagon-wall, in the kitchen-tongue, in the voice that had been her own mother's at the spring sowing of her tenth year:

"Arsulan."

She waited, and said it again: "Arsulan. Come."

And a third time: "Arsulan. Come to the bridge."

The wagon was still. The wolf at the windward wheel-well breathed. The boy at her wrist did not move. The folded square of brown paper hung in its tube at her neck. The north wind — the windward wind, the steppe wind, across seven hundred li between the salt-fork and the Iron Gates — held quiet.

She closed her eyes and slept the short shallow sleep of a mother in a Bureau wagon, her hand at her son's wrist, the wolf at the windward, the half-watch passing.

It held to the changing of the third — and at that changing, on the morning of the nineteenth, three thousand li north at the lee of the third frozen creek, in the ger at the lee of the long grey ridge, in the grey light past dawn, a daughter who had not in her first night off the chain said the name of the man asleep one pace from her on the felt said it now, in her sleep, the way her mother had said it three thousand li south into the wood of a wagon-wall:

"Mama."

The man at one pace did not wake. The wolf at her ankles did not lift his head. The bird at the rafter did not shift. The old man at the windward of the fire breathed no differently. The ger held the saying, and the saying went out of the smoke-hole on the wind off the higher plateau, and went south — the slow steppe-wind of the eleventh month, seven hundred li from the ger to the wagon — and laid the daughter's Mama at the windward wheel-well of the Bureau wagon on the salt-fork, the way the bond carries a word across white grass and black sand and the Yellow River and the kitchen-tongue and the steppe-tongue and the eighteen years between a mother and her daughter.

The wolf at the windward lifted his head, and set it down on his paws, and waited. He did not leave the wagon. He had been waiting nineteen years. He could wait three days.
