第八章 ——《三叉记下的浣衣作》

暮春的清晨,东市与西市俨然两座城。西市自有其尘土、驼溺、自上凉州运来的牦牛酥油气,背景里嗡嗡浮动着粟特语、钵罗婆语,以及一缕细微而执拗的吐蕃口音;东市则有书肆巷里浆糊的气味、面铺中羊脂的腥香,与汉墨那一脉干涩细微的清芬。东市是更老的市。东市自隋已是市。其西侧的拱廊,于她此生之内已重修过两遭。

她步行而过,着一身灰色道服,于第三日辰初一刻。

慧济跟在她身后,保持着一名还俗禅僧侍奉日雇道姑的恰到好处的小小敬距。他左腋下夹着一片湿棉布,外裹淡黄纸——便是从井中捞出的那块浣衣印记布。昨夜暮鼓后他在安化坊边缘那间砖窑小屋里,已辨出那道细小的朱线三叉。东市在册浣衣作三百一十家,他已收束至七家。七家之中,四家以小三叉缝为作坊印,三家以之为浣衣女的私押。三家之中,一家是设在绢市拱廊后的小分铺;昨夜暮鼓时分他一路细问下来,那是东市唯一一家将此印记缝于棉地而非麻地、且用细朱线的浣衣作。

那小分铺,便是三叉记下的浣衣作。

三叉记设在绢市拱廊后头,落在两根公示石柱之第二根之后,藏在拱廊与装订铺后墙之间一道窄巷里。招牌是一方木板,漆作褪色的朱红,三个黑色十字以筹码般细匀的纵列排开。浣衣作只一间,后墙沿设一道砖砌洗槽,槽上自房首至房尾横拉一根麻绳作晾衣线,一道矮门,于辰初一刻开启,通向一方天井,井畔有一口石板水缸,已有一名浣妇在那里动手了。

那浣妇三十六岁。一张瘦长的汉人面孔,便是府县胥吏所谓的「长石相」;衣袖湿透,是自五更便守在槽边的妇人才有的样子。婉君跨进门时,她未抬头。慧济跟进时,她仍未抬头。

「娘子。」

「娘子。」

「不必抬头。今晨我所问,皆是娘子不必抬头便可应承之事。我是永崇坊一名居家女冠。身后此位师父,今晨为我读字。我等为一件小而窄的事而来——关乎一只棉腕带上的小三叉缝。」

浣妇仍未抬头。

她只管将木拨子伸入槽中,以那道平稳的小半圆,将水推穿棉布而不伤经纬。

「此市中能在棉地上缝三叉者,共有三名妇人。还请娘子明示,是哪一位。」

「有此三人。我是其一。这位师父袖中所怀,是细朱线缝在棉地上的——惟我一人作此。另两人,一以黑丝,一以蓝麻。娘子若愿,便请将所带之物示我。」

慧济上前一步,揭开纸,将布平摊在槽沿。槽中之水,已被晨间的灰碱染作灰色,那块布搁在槽沿,比在库房灯下时显得更薄。

浣妇手未离拨,斜眼一瞥那布。

「是我之作。」

「娘子可笃定?」

「娘子。庞家书吏的棉腕带,三叉细朱线缝,我已做了九年。然这一道缝,比我的手更老——是我母亲的针。我母亲已殁四年。娘子袖中之物,是庞家书吏的腕带。此带,是四年以上的旧物。娘子今日之案,是一桩旧案。」

「庞家。」

「东市庞家,娘子。第二拱廊的庞氏一族。玉石商。母亲在世时,庞家有四名书吏;我接手以来,是两名。这带的剪裁,是给惯于戴在右腕之人。多数书吏戴在左腕,以护写字之手不为汗渍所沾。戴在右腕者,娘子,便是用左手书写的书吏。」

「娘子记得是哪一位?」

「我母亲在世时,庞家有两名左手书吏。一人于湿夏之年被遣。另一人,娘子,至今仍在庞家。是庞家的总账先生。喉间有一颗瘿,约莫枣核大小。行走时左足略向外滚。其名,庞嗣成。」

婉君于这窄小的浣衣作中,未让自己的面色作丝毫变化。

她昨日午后已在药铺库房听过这名字——自厨房婢女莫薇口中。莫薇并未亲耳听过此名,却以那种粟特人家专有的小窄句式形容过——前夜亥初前后来到厨门外的那个汉人男子——喉间一瘿、左足微滚的汉人男子

莫薇所形容的,每一处可见之印记,皆是东市庞家的庞嗣成。

而庞家,正是亡夫纸条上三家名号之一。

辰正时分,她走出浣衣作,那块布已回到慧济袖中,浣妇的拨子仍在她身后槽中起落不歇。在拱廊与装订铺之间的窄巷里,她不准许自己出一言。慧济在巷中,亦不许自己出声。

行至两根公示石柱之第二根前,她止步。

「慧济师。」

「师姊。」

「庞家是玉石之家。」

「正是。」

「亡夫纸条——那十一字——载有三家名号。第一家是绢商张氏。第二家,依大悌的释读,至今未明。第三家,便是庞氏。」

「再加一个庞嗣成。」

「庞嗣成是总账先生。庞嗣成有喉间之瘿。庞嗣成有左足外滚。庞嗣成前夜亥初在安宅之厨。」

「看来如此。」

她容此一推。让此推论立在她面前,立在那条窄巷里,立在晨尘自鞋面起、装订铺浆糊气浮在凝滞晨光中的此刻。

此推论甚为齐整。

此推论,她内里登记,或许过于齐整。

她今晨不许自己生出第二念。她只准第一念。

「慧济师。」

「师姊。」

「庞家。拱廊。」

「是,师姊。」

二人遂行。

庞家于第二拱廊的正门,是自南端起的第三间铺面,蓝灰色高棚之下。东市的石材商自隋朝起便沿用此式高棚。棚布近年才新漆过——由色泽看,不出一年。然门框漆色却是原物:四角细裂之干,是历经十夏风雨的木框才有的干态。铺门洞开。内里,长长的红木柜台后,辰正之时,一名总账正翻检晨账。

那总账喉间并无瘿。是一位较年轻的男子,一张洁净的汉人面孔,一种平整而专注的神色——由其肩膀的证据可知,过去两日中已自习得:此家中有事。

「娘子。」

「总账师傅。我是永崇坊讼牒崔婉君。今日为一件小私事而来,关乎一只腕带,其浣衣印记属贵宅。腕带,今晨非要紧之事。要紧之事是带者。带者,由浣衣印及左手之习推之,乃庞嗣成。」

那总账并未即刻应答。

他放下手中正拨的算珠,将双手收入袖中。

「娘子。庞嗣成在敝宅。自湿夏之年起便在敝宅。是总账先生。他——娘子,今晨此事,娘子或愿与家主对席,非与在下。」

「他在宅中。」

「在,娘子,在内室。」

「我欲与之言。」

「娘子。今晨内室是核算与安宅一事之室。家主于晓鼓之时,已命总账以一家欠安宅之家所专有的私法料理此事——昨日钟前清点,欠安宅南石十四批、羊毛一车,过去两日皆未交付。总账先生,娘子,深陷账中。彼未眠,娘子。自昨夜亥初一刻起,未曾离开内室。」

她在那第二名总账的小句汉话之上,未让自己的面色作丝毫变化。

「自昨夜亥初一刻起未曾离开内室。」

「正是,娘子。」

「请师傅告我,昨夜亥初一刻与其同在内室者,皆是何人。」

「家主,娘子。家主长子。三名小书吏。厨子。小内库的库头——库头,娘子,恕在下直言,未曾入过敝宅以外任何一家的厨房。」

「亥初一刻之前呢?」

「庞嗣成,娘子,昨夜戌初一刻,在宅门接收自河西寄达的鸿胪寺差使所送密函。差使在门外停留,约莫三十息。总账签收文书,将之携入内室。自彼时至此刻,未曾离开内室。家主,娘子,若加细问,必可作证。」

她在铺前,并未即刻应答。

她在自身规矩的内廊里,做了一道平静的小阅读:这是一名其总账面色每一处可见之印皆告以实情的书吏。

她另有一道平静的小阅读:这亦可能是一名于今晨晓鼓之时受家主嘱咐之书吏——嘱咐是:永崇坊崔氏将至,崔氏所问之答,乃庞嗣成自昨夜亥初一刻起未离内室。此嘱咐至简。此嘱咐不必使书吏知晓崔氏究欲问何。

她在铺前,并未即刻判定二读何者为真。

「总账师傅。」

「娘子。」

「我欲与家主言。」

庞家家主年五十有八,身材壮实,着一袭浅灰文士袍,右肩下的接缝近日才放宽。他于内宅三室之第二间接见婉君,门洞开向小内庭。总账先生——庞嗣成——则在第二间之后室内,靠后墙的案前,背对门。婉君被引入时,他未转身。

她自内室望去,见其背影一条线;其喉右侧那颗小瘿,自内袍领上露出;其左足在地上微斜——右足端方,左足向外滚出一指宽。总账先生身上每一可见之印,皆契合莫薇所述前夜亥初安宅厨门外那名汉人男子。

家主拱手。

「崔娘子。」

「庞家主。」

「娘子所看,正是在下总账。」

「正是。」

「在下总账,娘子,在敝宅供职十九载,除却些寻常小怨——便是纠正过家中小辈算账时所结的那点小恩怨——再无敌人。他,娘子,便是娘子所疑前夜亥初在安宅之人。」

「他与所述者相合。」

「他与所述者相合,娘子,在瘿、在足、在腕带、在浣衣印——此皆敝宅可示于公的标记。然他与所述者不合,因有一小事:前夜傍晚他即在此室此案前,与其堂弟——便是小内库库头——其堂弟之妻——便是敝宅记账——并第二拱廊的一位波斯酒商相伴。那酒商按敝宅旧规,亲赴总账面前结清季账。酒商于昨夜亥初一刻辞去。堂弟与堂弟之妻夜宿敝宅东厢小室,二人至五更皆守在案前核安宅十四批之事。总账先生彻夜未眠。他,娘子,自昨日午正起,未曾出过敝宅一步。」

他在内室之中,并未望向那总账。

他望着婉君。

她于自身那条平静的小廊中登记:他持着那种平静而审慎的神情——一名其总账此刻是阖宅未能洞见之危机中不可或缺的核心,又于今晨受他人之命,走至自家第二内室后头的一张案前,以澄清一桩阖宅未及惧怕之疑——所特有的神情。

晓鼓之时已有人告知他:她要来。已有人告知他:当作何说辞。

她尚不知告知者为谁。

「庞家主。」

「娘子。」

「请家主告我,前夜亥初此宅中另四人之名。」

「在下堂弟。堂弟之妻。波斯酒商。敝宅小内库库头。」

「酒商之名?」

「葡萄娘子。冷藤酒肆酒商之遗孀。」

她在第五个名号上,未让自己的面色作丝毫变化。

前夜亥初葡萄娘子在冷藤酒肆,正是安那夏带着楼兰祆祠之圣火火种回到安宅之时。葡萄娘子并不在庞家。葡萄娘子,便是昨日午后申初一刻在其酒肆内室之中,向她供出庞家乃亡夫纸条上三名之第二的那位证人。

而庞家,今晨以葡萄娘子作前夜亥初总账先生之佐证。

家主只三句话,便把她引入粟特人家所惯用的那道审慎小礼数——证人之证人反被举为佐证。有人——以对她自家情报渠道颇为审慎的小知——告知庞家:崔娘子在东市中最可信的「证人破证人」,是冷藤酒肆的女东家。庞家便——或在昨夜,或在晓鼓之时——据此架起佐证。

庞家主,要么是在告诉她真相,要么是在用一个专为她而设的小特定形状的谎言。

她尚不知是何者。

她俯身一礼。

「庞家主。」

「娘子。」

「我将于午初一刻再来,家主。届时偕冷藤酒肆葡萄娘子同来,请她于家主在场之时,当面告我:昨夜亥初一刻,她是否在此案前。」

「她自会,娘子。」

「她自会。」

她转身。她以那种被东市第二拱廊汉人家主告知两件她暂尚无法理清之事的妇人那般缓慢审慎的步态,走出门去。

慧济跟上。

行至拱廊转角第二根公示石柱旁,她止步。

「慧济师。」

「师姊。」

「他无辜。」

「师姊以为?」

「我以为。瘿、足、腕带——此皆可示于公的印记。庞家给我一个我可以走至冷藤酒肆去破或不破的佐证。这佐证是昨夜临时为我备下的。庞家有两个时辰可以编造谎言。他们没有编造。他们指了葡萄娘子。」

「然后呢?」

「然后,师父——庞家是被人告知的。有人在晓鼓之时嘱咐家主:永崇坊崔娘子要登门。有人为他写好了佐证。有人以那一种知晓我私下办案渠道的、专有的、细致的小知,知道冷藤酒肆的女东家是平康坊中我惟一一名头一刻便会信其言的证人。」

「是谁?」

「师父,这便是问题。」

她在石柱旁略顿。

「还有井中那只腕带。」

「腕带是栽下的。腕带原是庞家某位真书吏之物,于某不知何时遗失或被取,由那绢商亲手插入扫帚毛中。他知浣衣印记必引人寻至庞家,庞家书吏必引人寻至一名其外形与莫薇所述相合之人。厨房婢女见的是一名汉人男子。她见的是瘿、足、左手腕带。她未见其面。凶手以那名男子可示于公的标记着身——其形貌或自鸿胪寺某书吏处、或自市场名册处、或自浣衣印记本身处,他读自他处。」

「为何?」

「师父。因为,照那掮客的小窄逻辑,永崇坊崔氏迟早会自井中找出那只腕带。崔氏迟早会将腕带送至浣衣作,浣衣作迟早会引她至庞家,庞家迟早会奉上总账。而崔氏——倘若崔氏不审慎——便会归档此总账,请裴中丞将之提至御史台,午初一刻怀着案结的小私之安回到家中。」

「倘若崔氏审慎呢?」

「倘若崔氏审慎,师父,她会于辰初一刻走入庞家,看那总账约莫八息之久,见此人于每一可示于公之印上皆与莫薇所述相合,胸中——师父——便会生出那种「此人与所述太过相合」的小平静不安。她便会坐在此石柱旁问自己:何以一名本欲于三个时辰内便被寻出之人,竟被如此审慎地安排好以待人寻?」

「然后呢?」

「然后,师父,她便会问自己第二个问题:长安城中,至昨夜暮鼓时分,谁知道一名释门头陀在同日午正一刻以绳索自井中拽出过一只棉腕带上的浣衣印记?」

「师姊,那并不是多人。」

「不是多人,师父。是四人。是你。是我。是那萨拉的副手阿斯潘。是安那夏。」

她在石柱旁,未让自己的面色作丝毫变化。

她今晨亦不许自己说出第二句——便是:她于辰初一刻走入庞家,其所循之窄小指引,乃是慧济自一口井中拽出的腕带;汲井之时,安那夏正立在厨门边自始至终;昨日午正一刻,他曾自她手中接过那块浣衣女之布,趁她尚未将布收入袖中。

他接过去看那一道缝。

他再交还给她。

她在厨院中,未曾留意他在「看」与「还」之间,那只手做了些什么。

她缓缓行步,以那种被井中之浣衣印记引至第二拱廊一家庞氏宅前、又被庞氏一连告知三事而尚无法理清的妇人,所特有的从容不迫的步态。

她今晨不许自己生出第三念。

她在自身规矩的审慎小廊中,只准前二念。

她继续前行。

Chapter Eight

The Laundry at the Sign of the Three Crosses

The Eastern Market in the morning was, in the late spring, a different city from the Western. The Western had its dust, its camel-piss, its smell of yak butter from the upper Liangzhou consignments, its background hum of Sogdian and Pahlavi and a small persistent Tibetan; the Eastern had the smell of paper-glue from the booksellers' lane and the smell of mutton-fat from the noodle-shops and the dry small fragrance of Han ink. The Eastern was the older market. The Eastern had been a market under Sui. The arcades on its western side had been rebuilt twice in her lifetime.

She walked it, on foot, in her grey, at the half of the seventh hour of the morning of the third day.

Brother Hui walked behind her at the small respectful distance of an unfrocked Buddhist following a Daoist nun who had retained him for the day. He carried, under his left arm, a piece of damp cotton wrapped in pale yellow paper — the laundry-mark cloth from the well. He had spent the late evening of yesterday, in his brick-kiln hut at the edge of Anhua Ward, identifying the small three-cross red thread. He had narrowed the Eastern Market's three hundred and ten registered laundries down to seven. Of the seven, four did the small three-cross stitch as a wash-house mark and three did it as a wash-attendant's signature. Of those three, one was a sub-stall at the back of the silk-mercers' arcade and was, by his quiet inquiry at the dusk drum yesterday, the only laundry in the Eastern Market that did the mark with a thin red thread on a cotton-and-not-linen ground.

The sub-stall was the laundry at the sign of the Three Crosses.

The sign of the Three Crosses sat at the rear of the silk-mercers' arcade, behind the second of the two public-records pillars, in the small narrow alley between the arcade and the back wall of the bookbinders'. The sign itself was a wooden plank, painted a faded red, with three black crosses arranged in the small even vertical of a tally. The laundry was a single room with a brick washing-trough along its rear wall, a hemp drying-line running the length of the room above the trough, and a low door that opened, at the half of the seventh hour, onto a courtyard with a slate cistern and a single laundress already at work.

The laundress was thirty-six. She had a long lean Han face, the kind of face the prefecture clerks called zhang shi xiang — long-stone-face — and the wet sleeves of a woman who had been at her trough since the fifth watch. She did not look up when Wanjun stepped through the door. She did not look up when Brother Hui did.

"Mistress."

"Mistress."

"You will not need to look up. I will not, this morning, ask for anything you cannot give me without looking up. I am a lay Daoist of Yongchong Ward. The brother behind me is, this morning, my reader. We have come for a small narrow inquiry concerning the small three-cross stitch on a cotton wristband."

The laundress did not look up.

She continued to plunge her wooden paddle into the trough, in the careful flat half-circle that drove the water through the cotton without bruising the warp.

"There are three women in this market who do the three-cross stitch on cotton. The mistress will tell me which."

"There are. I am one. I am the only one who does it in the small red thread that this brother carries in his sleeve. There are two who do it in black silk and one who does it in linen blue. The mistress will say which she has brought me, if she wishes."

Brother Hui stepped forward, unwrapped the cloth, and laid it, flat, on the rim of the trough. The water in the trough was grey with the morning's lye and the cloth, on the rim, looked thinner than it had in the lamp of the storeroom.

The laundress, without lifting her hand from her paddle, glanced at the cloth.

"That is mine."

"You are sure."

"Mistress. I have been doing the three-cross stitch in red thread on cotton wristbands of clerks of the Pang household for nine years. The stitch on this band is the stitch of an older hand than I — my mother. My mother died four years ago. The mistress has, in her sleeve, the wristband of a clerk of the Pang household. The wristband is older than four years. The mistress's case, mistress, is an old case."

"The Pang household."

"The Pang household in the Eastern Market, mistress. The Pang clan of the second arcade. The merchants of jade-and-stone. The household has had four clerks in my mother's time and two in mine. The wristband, by the cut, is for a man who wore the band on his right wrist. Most clerks wear it on the left; the band is for sweat at the writing-hand. A right-wrist band, mistress, is for a clerk who writes with his left."

"You remember which clerk."

"There were two left-handed clerks in the household in my mother's time. One was dismissed in the year of the wet summer. The other, mistress, is in the household still. He is the Pang household's senior accountant. He has a small wen at the throat, the size of a date-stone. He rolls his left foot slightly when he walks. His name is Pang Sicheng."

Wanjun did not, in the small narrow laundry, allow her face to do anything.

She had heard that name yesterday afternoon, in the apothecary's storeroom, from the kitchen girl Mowei, who had not heard the name herself but had described — in the small specific Sogdian-household phrase that meant the Han man who came to the kitchen door at the seventh hour of the night before lasta Han man with a wen at the throat and a rolling left foot.

Mowei had described, by every visible mark, Pang Sicheng of the Pang household of the Eastern Market.

The Pang household had been one of the three names on her late husband's slip.

She walked out of the laundry at the half of the eighth hour with the cloth back in Brother Hui's sleeve and the laundress's paddle still plunging in the trough behind her. She did not, in the alley between the arcade and the bookbinders', allow herself a word. Brother Hui did not, in the alley, allow himself one either.

At the second of the two public-records pillars she stopped.

"Brother Hui."

"Sister."

"The Pang household is the household of jade-and-stone."

"It is."

"My husband's slip — the eleven characters — held three household names. The first was the silk-merchant Zhang. The second, by Datis's reading, was a man I have not yet identified. The third was the Pang."

"And Pang Sicheng."

"Pang Sicheng is the senior accountant. Pang Sicheng has the wen at the throat. Pang Sicheng has the rolling left foot. Pang Sicheng was in the kitchen of the An compound at the seventh hour of the night before last."

"So it would appear."

She allowed the inference. She let it stand in front of her, in the small narrow alley, with the dust of the morning rising at her shoes and the smell of the bookbinders' paper-glue in the small still air.

The inference was very tidy.

The inference was, she registered, perhaps too tidy.

She did not, this morning, allow the second thought yet. She allowed the first.

"Brother Hui."

"Sister."

"The household. The arcade."

"Yes, sister."

They walked.

The Pang household's frontage in the second arcade was the third storefront from the south end, set behind a high blue-grey awning of a kind that the Eastern Market's stone-merchants had been keeping since Sui. The awning had been re-painted recently — within the year, by the colour. The lacquer of the door-frame, however, was original; the small fine cracks at the corners had the dryness of a frame that had been weathered through ten summers. The shop-front was open. Inside, behind the long mahogany counter, a senior clerk was, at the half of the eighth hour, going through the morning's accounts.

The senior clerk did not have a wen at the throat. The senior clerk was a younger man with a small clean Han face and a flat-and-attentive expression which had, in the past two days, taught itself, by the testimony of his shoulders, that something in the household was wrong.

"Mistress."

"Master clerk. I am Cui Wanjun, the scrivener-of-grievances of Yongchong. I am here on a small private matter relating to a wristband whose laundry-mark belongs to your household. The wristband is not, this morning, the matter. The matter is the wearer of the wristband. The wearer of the wristband, by the laundry-mark and by the small habit of left-handedness, is Pang Sicheng."

The clerk did not, at the counter, immediately answer.

He set down the abacus-bead he had been moving. He folded his hands inside his sleeves.

"Mistress. Pang Sicheng is in the household. He has been in the household since the year of the wet summer. He is the senior accountant. He is — mistress, the matter on the table this morning is a matter you may wish to have at the table with the head of the house, not with me."

"He is in the building."

"He is, mistress, in the inner room."

"I would speak with him."

"Mistress. The inner room, this morning, is the room of the household's accounting on the matter of the An compound, which the head of the house has, at the dawn drum, set the senior accountant to in the small private idiom of a household that owes the An compound — by yesterday's bell — fourteen consignments of southern stone and one cart of wool that have not, in the past two days, been delivered. The senior accountant is, mistress, deep in the accounting. He has not, mistress, slept. He has not, mistress, been outside the inner room since the third hour of last night."

She did not, on the second clerk's small Han phrase, allow her face to do anything.

"He has not been outside the inner room since the third hour of last night."

"Mistress."

"You will tell me, master clerk, who was in the inner room with him at the third hour of last night."

"The head of the house, mistress. The head of the house's eldest son. Three junior clerks. The cook. The master of the small inner storeroom — who is not, mistress, by your house's question, a man who has been in the kitchen of any compound but ours."

"And before the third hour of last night."

"Pang Sicheng was, mistress, at the half of the eighth hour of last night, at the gate of the household receiving the sealed correspondence from Hexi by the courier of the Honglu Si. The courier remained at the gate, mistress, for the count of perhaps thirty breaths. The senior accountant signed for the correspondence and bore it into the inner room. He did not leave the inner room from that hour to this. The head of the house, mistress, will, if pressed, swear to it."

She did not, in the shop-front, immediately answer.

She had, in the inner corridor of her own discipline, the small flat reading of a man who had, by every visible mark on his clerk's face, told her the truth.

She had also the small flat reading of a clerk who had been instructed by the head of his house, perhaps at the dawn drum this morning, that the lady Cui of Yongchong was expected and that the answer to the lady Cui's question was Pang Sicheng has been in the inner room since the third hour of last night. The instruction would have been simple. The instruction would not have required the clerk to know what the lady Cui was asking.

She did not, in the shop-front, decide which of the two readings was the true one.

"Master clerk."

"Mistress."

"I will speak with the head of the house."

The head of the Pang household was a stocky man of fifty-eight, in a pale grey scholar's gown that had been recently let out at the seam under the right shoulder. He received Wanjun in the second of the household's three inner rooms, with the door open onto the small inner court. The senior accountant — Pang Sicheng — was in the room behind the second, at the desk against the back wall, with his back to the door. He did not turn when Wanjun was shown in.

She could see, from the inner room, the line of his back; the small wen at the right side of his throat — visible above the collar of his under-robe; the slight tilt of his left foot on the floor, the right foot square, the left rolled a fingerwidth outward. The senior accountant matched, in every visible mark, the description Mowei had given of the Han man at the kitchen door of the An compound at the seventh hour of the night before last.

The head of the house bowed.

"Lady Cui."

"Master Pang."

"You are looking, lady, at my senior accountant."

"I am."

"My senior accountant, lady, is a man of nineteen years in this household and of no enemy beyond the small ordinary enemies of a clerk who has corrected the addition of the household's juniors. He is, lady, the man you suspect of being at the An compound at the seventh hour of the night before last."

"He matches the description."

"He matches, lady, the description by the wen and by the foot and by the wristband and by the laundry-mark, all of which are public marks of his household identity. He does not match the description by the small fact that he was, on the evening before last, at this desk in this room, in the company of his cousin who is the master of the small inner storeroom, his cousin's wife who is the household's bookkeeper, and a Persian wine-merchant from the second arcade who had come to settle his quarterly account in the small custom we keep of paying the senior accountant in person. The wine-merchant left at the third hour of last night. The cousin and the cousin's wife slept the night in the small east room of this compound, having been at the desk until the fifth watch on the matter of the An compound's fourteen consignments. The senior accountant did not sleep the night. He has not, lady, been out of this compound since the noon hour of yesterday."

He did not, in the inner room, look at the senior accountant.

He looked at Wanjun.

He had — she registered, in the small flat corridor — the careful flat look of a man whose senior accountant was, at this hour, the indispensable centre of a household crisis the household had not been able to see beyond, and who had walked, this morning, on instruction of someone else, to a desk at the back of his own second inner room, to clear a doubt that the household had not yet known to fear.

He had been told, at the dawn drum, that she would come. He had been told what to say.

She did not yet know who had told him.

"Master Pang."

"Lady."

"You will give me, master, the names of the four other persons in this compound at the seventh hour of the night before last."

"My cousin. My cousin's wife. The Persian wine-merchant. The household's master of the inner storeroom."

"And the Persian wine-merchant's name."

"Khorshid. The widow of the wine-merchant of the Cool Vine."

She did not, on the fifth name, allow her face to do anything.

Madam Khorshid had been at the Cool Vine at the seventh hour of the night before last when An Naxia had returned to the gate of the An compound with a brand from the atash of Loulan. Madam Khorshid had not been in the Pang household at the seventh hour. Madam Khorshid had been the source — at the third hour of yesterday afternoon, in the room of her own wine-shop — of the testimony that the Pang household was the household of the second of the three names on her husband's slip.

The Pang household had, this morning, named Madam Khorshid as the alibi for the senior accountant on the evening of the murder.

The head of the house had, in three sentences, walked her into the small careful Sogdian-household courtesy by which a witness's witness was named as a witness back. The household had been told, by someone with the small careful knowledge of her own intelligence channels, that the lady Cui's most credible alibi-breaker, in the Eastern Market, was the proprietress of the Cool Vine, and the household had — perhaps last night, perhaps at the dawn drum — set the alibi accordingly.

The head of the Pang household was either telling her the truth or telling her a lie in the small specific shape of a lie that had been designed for her.

She did not yet know which.

She bowed.

"Master Pang."

"Lady."

"I will return, master, in the half of the noon hour, with Madam Khorshid of the Cool Vine in my company, who will tell me, in your hearing, whether she was at this table at the third hour of yesternight."

"She will, lady."

"She will."

She turned. She walked out, in the slow careful walk of a woman who had been told, by the head of a Han household in the second arcade of the Eastern Market, two things she could not yet sort.

Brother Hui followed.

At the corner of the arcade, by the second public-records pillar, she stopped.

"Brother Hui."

"Sister."

"He is innocent."

"You believe."

"I believe. The wen, the foot, the wristband — these are public marks. The household offers an alibi I can break or not break by walking to the Cool Vine. The alibi was prepared for me overnight. The household had two hours to invent a lie. They did not invent. They named Madam Khorshid."

"And."

"And, brother — the household was also told. Someone instructed the head of the house, at the dawn drum, that the lady Cui of Yongchong would walk in. Someone wrote him the alibi. Someone knew, by the small specific knowledge of the small specific channels of my own work, that the proprietress of the Cool Vine was the only Pingkang witness whose word I would, in the first hour, take."

"Who."

"That, brother, is the question."

She paused at the pillar.

"And the wristband in the well."

"The wristband was planted. The wristband was a wristband of a real clerk of the Pang household, lost or taken at some other hour, set in the bristles of the broom by the silk-merchant himself, so that the laundry would lead to the Pang clerk, and the Pang clerk would lead to a man whose physical description matched the description Mowei had given. The kitchen girl saw a Han man. The kitchen girl saw the wen, the foot, the left-handed wristband. She did not see the face. The killer dressed himself in the small specific public marks of a man whose description he had read from somewhere — perhaps from a clerk of the Honglu Si, perhaps from a market-roster, perhaps from the laundry-mark itself."

"Why."

"Brother. Because, in the small narrow logic of the broker, the lady Cui of Yongchong was always going to find the wristband in the well. The lady Cui was always going to take the wristband to a laundry, and the laundry was always going to take her to the Pang household, and the Pang household was always going to deliver the senior accountant. And the lady Cui — if the lady Cui were not careful — was going to file the senior accountant, and ask Pei to have him taken to the Censorate, and walk home at the half of the noon hour with the small flat private feeling of a case closed."

"And if the lady Cui were careful."

"If the lady Cui were careful, brother, she would walk into the Pang household at the half of the seventh hour, look at the senior accountant for the count of perhaps eight breaths, see the man Mowei had described in every public mark, and feel — at the inside of her chest, brother — the small flat unease of a man who looks too much like the description. She would then sit at this pillar and ask herself why a man one was meant to find in three hours had been so carefully arranged to be found."

"And then."

"Then, brother, she would ask herself the second question, which is who, in the city of Chang'an, knew at the dusk drum of yesterday that a laundry-mark on a cotton wristband had been pulled from a well by a Buddhist monk on a rope at the half of the noon hour of the same day."

"That is not, sister, many people."

"It is not, brother. It is four. It is you. It is me. It is Aspand the naasalar's assistant. It is An Naxia."

She did not, at the pillar, allow her face to do anything.

She did not, this morning, allow herself the second sentence — which was that she had walked into the Pang household at the half of the seventh hour at the small narrow direction of a wristband Brother Hui had pulled from a well in the company of An Naxia, who had stood at the kitchen door of the kitchen yard for the whole of the well-work, and who had, at the half of the noon hour of yesterday, taken from her hand the laundress-cloth before she had wrapped it in her sleeve.

He had taken it from her hand to look at the stitch.

He had given it back.

She had not, in the kitchen yard, watched what he had done with his hand between the looking and the giving.

She walked, slowly, in the careful unhurried walk of a woman who had been brought, by the laundry-mark in a well, to a household in the second arcade, and who had been told by the household three things, none of which she could yet sort.

She did not, this morning, allow the third reading.

She allowed, in the small careful corridor of her own discipline, the first two.

She walked on.
