第 27 章 ——《第二哨所的囚车》

我们在第三注盐茶时下了山脊。

我们顺着背风一面下来,在午时钟最后一刻的灰光里——别尔克在上风,脱古鲁在下风,别勒格特离我靴子三步,第二头狼离那匹枣骝母马的肩三步,海东青在东南面巡飞。哨所里盐茶已斟到第三注:值勤的探骑头领下了梯,那四个人从底下的小屋上来,掌车的把刷子搁下,端着白瓷茶盏走到了砖砌的院子上。囚车里头,靠着上风一侧的轮坑,那位母亲与那个少年没有动。他们已在那辆囚车里二十三日。

值勤的探骑头领唤作唐快。他亲手杀过十七名南方册下的结契人。囚车出发的第二日,他读过一封十二岁少年写的家书——开头一句是「姐姐,果园里的狼影」,断在第二次说出「父亲他」的地方——他将信塞进掌车人帐簿的角里,没有笑。他是橘皮气的那位大人手底下养出来的朱砂院人:不是为了取乐而残忍,那样我倒能干干净净地恨他;他是精准的,一个把他那十七人的数字像橘皮大人把他一百四十三颗牙齿那样数过的人——视为对一桩大于他们任何一个人的公事所付出的账。他在长林城南有家口,一妻,二女;这些我要在多年之后才知,而知道之时,我会但愿我未曾知道。这一日的破晓里,他不过是横在我与那辆囚车之间的一具形状罢了,而囚车里坐着我母亲,而我,在过去的十七周里,已变成那种能看着横在自己与母亲之间的一具形状、还感到自己脉息沉缓下去的人。

在看见我们之前,他望着山脊,看的方式正与他二十三日来望着自己车辆的轮坑相同。然后他看见了——三匹马,两头狼,东南面那只鸟——他放下茶盏,拔出马刀,平直而高亮地喝道:「探骑!戒备!」

那四人从底下的小屋里粮食喂壮的脚步重重地跑上来,刀挎腰间,弩挂肩上,在唐快身后列成三一楔阵——他在尖,三人在右翼,一人在左翼。掌车的扑地跪在砖上,一只手按着车轮,再不抬头。

别尔克放矢。第一支灰翎箭中了左翼那人衣领上方的软隙,他倒下了。第二支中了右翼那人下颏带子下方。第三支中了正中那人的肋——朱砂院的札甲在硬奔之人身上扣错了一个角度。唐快还没奔过半个院子,四人已倒了三人。

他没有放慢。他握马刀于右手、握弩于左手,重重地奔上来,剩下的最后一人在他一步之后。我抽出第三道溪边老鸦在垂柳下交给我的那张弓——长牛筋、东角——放矢,中了最后一人的肩,他倒下了。四中四。

唐快依旧不慢。他上了山脊的背风面,举起弩,发矢——那支盐铁短箭从冷气里平直地射向那匹栗色马上的脱古鲁。

我没有出声。别勒格特动了。

他离我的靴子,以一头狼向他安答的长斜角,把自己横在那栗色马与那矢之间,盐铁短箭中了他上风一侧的肩,靠上缘。我感到它落下——在我胸口结契所在的那只钵里,也在我自己的肩上,一口干净冷利、一指节大小的咬——我没有出声,他也没有。他将四爪稳在地上,看着我。女儿。他未倒。他在举刀。放矢。

我放矢。箭中唐快下颏带子下方的喉头,他倒下了,他不再起身。山脊背风面的砖头已是熟透烂芯的青瘀颜色。五个探骑倒了。掌车的从头至尾不曾抬一次头。

别勒格特带着盐铁立着,呼吸沉缓,朝囚车迈出一步,又一步,又一步。女儿。囚车。

我去了。


我走到院子里的囚车跟前。掌车的蹲在车轮旁,不肯看我。

「大人,」他对着砖说,「我不是探骑。我只赶车。我没有钥匙,没有刀。囚人不在掌车人手里——我只赶车。我赶车。」

「掌车的,」我说。

「大人。」

「你赶你的车。你不抬头。」

「大人,是。」

「好。坐下。喝你的盐茶。压住它。」

「大人。」他便照办了。

我绕到囚车后头。门闩封着探骑头领的朱砂印蜡——非掌车人可启,便非掌车人可担。我以手背破了蜡封,开了车门。

破蜡封时我的手没有抖。在弓上没有抖过,在脱古鲁脚镣的钥匙上没有抖过,在砖上五条人命前也没有抖过。自蓝雪那一夜起,狼便替我把抖接了去。可是当朱砂蜡在我手背下崩裂时,我感到了某样狼接不去、也未尝试去接的东西——那是一种没有敌人的恐惧,是一名女儿在最后一瞬之前、要看一看门后那位母亲究竟是她在心里揣了十七周的那位母亲、还是被这辆囚车空掉了的另一个女人,那一种特别的恐怖。我在结契上听见过她。隔着七百里我听见过「阿苏兰,到桥这边来」。可是结契传过来的是草原的那个自己,是安答,是我才刚学会我母亲也是的那位狼舌女人;它并没告诉我,那个为我剪过辫子、把一片苹果按进我手心、十九年里在门石上摆过羊脂的女人,是否还在囚车里,还是这条路也已经像收走我父亲那样收走了她。我破了封。我没让那只手知道它在害怕。

里面是一口小而幽黑的屏息——南运二十三日的转囚。两个身影靠着上风一侧的车壁。第一位是个四十六岁的女人,穿着黄河以南小自耕农妇人的褐色羊毛德勒,颈上挂着一条皮绳、绳上系着一只小小的漆筒,左手覆在儿子的右腕上,右手在那只漆筒上。她的头发是盐场的铁灰色。她看着门。从那位值勤探骑的第一声喝起,她便看着门。

她没有动。她没有说话。她看着我——看我的头发,从那剪刀的清晨长出了三指宽;看我肩上的札甲、背上的草原弓、身侧蒙克达姆的羊毛德勒、脚上的草原靴;看离我三步、肩上嵌着铁的别勒格特;看离那枣骝母马三步的第二头狼;看我身后一步的脱古鲁,看上风的别尔克。

我望着她读我,便明白她正在读那件她于十七周前送往北方的东西,正在数帝国对它做了什么。她亲手剪过那条辫子,用一双不稳的手,在厨房地上;她以她自己的母亲教她的兵丁结绑过那胸甲;她将一个女儿送进了一场专给男人办的战事,从那以后的几十周里,她始终不知道,这场战事会以一卷点名簿上的尸首把她送回来,还是以一个折掉的什么东西,还是什么也不送回来。如今那女儿站在一辆囚车门口,穿着一位死去的草原萨满的德勒,靴边一狼、身后一王子,那母亲的眼便从她身上一寸一寸过去,缓缓地数:头发,弓,靴,狼肩上的铁,嘴角新硬下来的那一道线——那道线不是果园放上去的。我看见她数完了。我看见这一数对她要了什么,又还给了她什么。她送走了一个姑娘。她正看着一名兵、一名安答、一件帝国会烧掉的东西——而她正看着她,仍然,整整全全,活着的她,沿着那条路一字不差地回来了,正如门石上那一条羊脂在十九年里答应过的、有一天那女儿会做的那样。

她看着我。她说出了那一声,用最小的声音,用谯家厨灶里的乡话——不是草原话,不是帝国官话,是她在我七岁那年除夕、就着米汤碗沿用过的那个声音:

「玉兰。」

我放出了憋住的气。

「玉兰,」她又说一次。第三次,对着囚车的幽暗:「玉兰。我的女儿。」

我说不出话。气一下出尽了,连回都回不匀,剩下的那一口我攥住了,因为再没有别的东西在撑我。

随后我给了她那个我十七周里对谁也未曾说过的字眼,用她在我四岁春耕里教过我的声音。「妈。」又一次。「妈。」再一次,在门内一步处:「妈。我回来了。」

她放开了儿子的腕。她起身——慢,在车厢板上坐过二十三日之后——走过墙到门的一步,在我面前一步处停住。她没有张开胳膊。她垂着两只胳膊。她将右手的手背覆在自己的心口上,将左手的手背覆在我的心口上——是安答对安答的那一开手势,正与我在囚帐第十七夜「阿苏兰」一词出口之时、覆在脱古鲁心口上的那一手相同。母与女在囚车门口,是同一手。

是安答的那一手。

她于是用草原话说出了那句——那件我从未知道她在牙齿后头藏了整整十九年又四个月又十一日的事——低低地,落进我心口之上的那处:

「阿苏兰。黑旗部蒙克玛拉之女,鄂诺-色尔加河弯博克多萨满蒙克达姆之外孙女,曾外祖母乃在汗号七年间于也速干汗安答之礼上执鼓之卡姆。」她吸了一口气。「那同一位卡姆,于你三岁之年,在谯家果园里执过你的襁褓板——我母亲托一位草原来的商队走商把她南送下来,那商队里有我自己的私脚。她抱了那襁褓板半更,对它低低地、用草原话说了——阿苏兰。小狮子。等。」

她看着我。「你已经等过了。」

我抵住囚车门稳了稳自己。「妈,」我说,用厨灶里的乡话。

「玉兰,」她答。

「妈。阿苏兰。」

「阿苏兰。我的女儿。我听见了,」她说,落进我心口之上的那处——她合上了两臂。

她将两臂合在我后颈上,那里头发自厨房地的那个清晨起、已长出了三指宽。那一日,她以一双不稳的女人的稳手,把剪刀按在我的辫子上;那以后的十九年里,她一次也未曾出声叫过我的另一个名字。

她此刻叫了。她抱住我,她叫了,她不放,我也不放。

那男孩从上风一侧的车壁起了身。他已有十一日没有动过笔;他在第十七日上停了话;第十八日他说了「妈」;这一日他看着姐姐从铁关那条路上来,靴边一狼。他走到门口,停在一步之外,看着我。

「姐姐,」他说,用最小的声音,用厨灶里的乡话。

我放开母亲的颈,跪到他面前,把手背贴上他的右颊——那骨头已从果园里那个四岁的孩子身上长出来了,那个孩子曾问过我,姐姐夜里在果园里去哪儿——而我母亲在门槛石上答过他:在她心里,安石。狼在她心里。我们不说这个。

「安石。小弟弟,」我说。

「姐姐。狼,」他说。

「狼在这里。」

「在三步处。」

「在三步处。」

他的声音又硬又小。「姐姐。我对妈说了。第十七夜我对妈说,轮坑那头的狼是——」他顿了顿。他吸了一口气,迫自己说出口:「轮坑那头的狼,是果园那头的狼。」

我把那寂静含住片刻。「安石。是的。轮坑那头的狼,是果园那头的狼;果园那头的狼,是妈的;我靴边的狼,是我的。它们在结契里是一头狼,在皮肉里是两头。它们一直在等,小弟弟。」

「姐姐。父亲,」他说。

我屏住不动。「我知道。」

「他咳了。第二日。他手里攥着褐布,把它搁在小床上——」他的声音变薄。「——他再没拿起来。」

我让那话沉进我里头。我在结契上已知——橘皮大人的信差把它带去了北方,格尔烟孔上的风把剩下的那段送到了我这里——但在结契上知道一件事,与在一个十二岁少年开裂的嗓子里于囚车门口听见一件事,是两种不同的内伤,后者比前者更深。我父亲在第二县盐场上做了十五年苦工,是为了守住二亩果园和一个县衙书吏不可看得太仔细的女儿;盐场的铁渣进了他的肺,留在那里;那座取了他肺的帝国,最终又把他拖上一辆囚车,让他死在南去的一条路上,手里攥着一块吸血的褐布,因为他的女儿心里有一头狼。他对朱砂院的勘令未曾置一词。志书会这样写——一名南方臣民未发一言的体面。那不是体面。那是与我母亲守了十九年同样的沉默,是营里那班人守了六个月同样的沉默:那是已经明白「带印记之人能得的唯一庇护、便是不给帝国留下任何可读的东西」的人所守的沉默。我父亲把那种沉默抱上了朱砂院囚车里的一张小床,连同那块褐布一齐搁下,再不抬起任何一样。他从未有过狼、契、草原舌。他只有我们,他只以缄默护着我们,护到了最后。

「小弟弟。来,」我说。

他来了——以那种「父亲把褐布搁在小床上再不拿起」的少年所有的、慢而不齐的步子——走进我右臂里侧的那块空处,把额头搁在我肩上札甲未扣的缝里,立在那里。他比我抱过的他大了。我在果园里留下的是一个十一岁、刚到我肩头的少年;囚车还给我的是一个十二岁、近乎到我下颏的少年,全是腕子和锁骨,新长出的长度还未填满,头发凌乱地长到耳后,朱砂院二十三日口粮把他的脸颊掏成了空的。北行的每一个冷夜里,囚帐的每一更静里,我都想着那个看池上鸭子、问姐姐夜里在果园里去哪儿的小弟弟。囚车带走了那个弟弟,留下这一个更长、更硬、更安静的,他换在了原来的位置上,而我也得学他,正如我得学我母亲那样,一片一片地学,在北行的路上。

他没哭。二十三日的囚车里他不曾哭过。他立着,吸气,呼气,然后,在我肩上的札甲里,用最小的声音,他哭了——而且一直哭,约有半更光景,我抱着他。我没叫他止住。在长城以北某处我已学会,有一种哭法须是要让人哭完的,不必像止血那样止它,由它清清地淌出来;抱着,便是这件事所要求于你的全部。所以我在囚车门口染血的砖上抱着他,背风一侧躺着死去的探骑,雪以拇指节的节奏落下,我感觉他单薄的双肩在长长的颤抖里把二十三日一次还清,我屏住不动,由他。

我母亲将左手搁在那男孩的肩上,将右手覆在我心口上,她守住寂静,她没哭。她在剪刀的第二剪时哭过,在厨房地的清晨;她哭过十九年;此刻她不再哭。她不动。

「女儿,」她终于说,用草原话。

「妈。」

「阿苏兰。」

「妈。母亲。」

「来。」

我来了。

别勒格特在囚车的背风一侧把头搁在爪上,盐铁在他肩上第三道扣处,等着。第二头狼从那枣骝母马的背风一侧起身,走到囚车前,把头抵在我母亲的右手手背上,她将左手搭在他头上,没有低头。

「弟兄。桥,」她说,对着那狼的头。

母亲。桥,他在结契上答。

「向南,」她说。

母亲。向北,他答。

她把气吸匀,用谯家厨灶里的乡话,用那一日清晨在剪刀上头说过那个字时的方式,对着那狼的头说:「向北。」又一次,咬住牙:「向北。」

我们走了。

Chapter Twenty-Seven

The Wagon at the Second Outpost

We came down off the ridge at the third pour.

We came down the lee of it in the grey light of the noon-bell's last quarter — Berke at the windward, Toghrul at the lee, Belegt three paces off my boot, the second wolf three paces off the bay mare's shoulder, the gyrfalcon working the south-east. At the outpost the salt-tea had reached its third pour: the senior outrider had come down the stair, the four had come up from the cot below, and the wagon-master had set his brush at rest and taken a porcelain cup out to the brick courtyard. Inside the wagon, against the windward wheel-well, the mother and the boy did not move. They had been in that wagon twenty-three days.

The senior outrider was Tang Kuai. He had killed seventeen southern bonded by his own hand. On the second day of the wagon he had read a letter written by a twelve-year-old boy — it began Sister, the wolf-shadow at the orchard and broke off at the second saying of Father has — and he had tucked it into the corner of the wagon-master's ledger and had not smiled. He was a Bureau man of the kind the orange-peel man bred: not cruel for the pleasure of it, which would have been a thing I could hate cleanly, but exact, a man who had counted his seventeen the way the orange-peel man counted his hundred and forty-three teeth, as the sum of a service rendered to a thing larger than either of them. He had a household south of Changlin, a wife, two daughters; I would not know that for years, and when I learned it I would wish I had not. On this dawn he was only the shape between me and the wagon, and the wagon held my mother, and I had become, in seventeen weeks, a person who could look at the shape between her and her mother and feel her pulse go slow.

He was looking at the ridge before he saw us, the way he had been looking at his own wheel-well for twenty-three days. Then he saw — three horses, two wolves, the bird in the south-east — and he set the cup down, and drew his saber, and shouted, flat and carrying: "Outriders! To arms!"

The four came out of the cot below at a heavy grain-fed run, sabers at the hip and crossbows on the shoulder, and formed up in a three-one wedge behind Tang Kuai — him at the point, three on the right wing, one on the left. The wagon-master dropped to his knees at the brick with a hand on the wheel and did not raise his head.

Berke loosed. The first grey-fletched arrow took the left-wing man in the soft gap above his collar, and he went down. The second took the right-wing man under the chin-strap. The third took the middle man at the rib, where Bureau lamellar laces at the wrong angle for a man at a hard run. Three of the four down before Tang Kuai had crossed half the courtyard.

He did not slow. He came on at a heavy run with the saber in his right hand and the crossbow in his left, the last of the four a stride behind him. I drew the bow Old Crow had given me at the willow on the third creek — long sinew, eastern horn — and loosed, and took the last man in the shoulder, and he went down. Four of four.

Tang Kuai still did not slow. He came up the lee of the ridge, raised the crossbow, and loosed — and the salt-iron quarrel flew flat across the cold at Toghrul on the chestnut.

I made no sound. Belegt moved.

He came off my boot at the long angle of a wolf to his anda, and put himself between the chestnut and the shaft, and the quarrel took him in the windward shoulder at the upper edge. I felt it land — in the bowl of my chest where the bond knots, and in my own shoulder, a clean cold bite the size of a finger-joint — and I made no sound, and neither did he. He set his four paws on the ground and looked at me. Daughter. He is not down. He is at the saber. Loose.

I loosed. The arrow took Tang Kuai in the throat under the chin-strap, and he went down, and he did not get up. The brick at the lee of the ridge had gone the colour of a bruised apple at the core. Five outriders down. The wagon-master had not lifted his head through any of it.

Belegt stood with the salt-iron in his shoulder, breathing slow, and took one step toward the wagon, and another, and a third. Daughter. The wagon.

I went.


I came up on the wagon in the courtyard. The wagon-master crouched at the wheel and would not look at me.

"Sir," he said, into the brick, "I'm not an outrider. I drive the wagon. I don't have a key, I don't have a saber. The captives aren't in the wagon-master's keeping — I only drive. I drive."

"Wagon-master," I said.

"Sir."

"You drive the wagon. You do not raise your head."

"Sir, no."

"Good. Sit. Drink your salt-tea. Keep it down."

"Sir." And he did.

I went round to the back of the wagon. The latch was sealed with the senior outrider's cinnabar wax — not the wagon-master's to open, and so not his to answer for. I broke the seal with the back of my hand and opened the door.

My hand did not shake at the seal. It had not shaken at the bow, nor at the key in Toghrul's ankle-iron, nor at five men on the brick. The wolf had been taking the shake for me since the blue snow. But I felt, as the cinnabar wax cracked under the back of my hand, something the wolf could not take and did not try to — a fear with no enemy in it, the particular terror of a daughter at the last instant before she sees whether the mother behind the door is the mother she carried in her chest for seventeen weeks or some other woman the wagon has hollowed out. I had heard her on the bond. I had heard Arsulan, come to the bridge across seven hundred li. But the bond carried the steppe-self, the anda, the wolf-tongue woman I had only just learned my mother also was; it did not tell me whether the woman who had cut my braid and pressed an apple-piece into my palm and set mutton-fat at a doorstone for nineteen years was still inside the wagon, or whether the road had taken her the way it had taken my father. I broke the seal. I did not let the hand know it was afraid.

The inside was a small dark held breath — twenty-three days of transit south. Two figures sat against the windward wall. The first was a woman of forty-six in the brown wool deel of a smallholder's wife south of the Yellow River, a leather thong at her neck and a small lacquered tube on it, her left hand laid over her son's right wrist, her right hand at the tube. Her hair was the iron-grey of the salt-foundry. She was looking at the door. She had been looking at the door since the senior outrider's first shout.

She did not move. She did not speak. She looked at me — at my hair, three thumbs' breadth grown out from the morning of the shears, at the lamellar on my shoulder and the steppe-bow at my back and Möngke-Dam's wool deel at my side and the steppe-boots on my feet, at Belegt three paces off with the iron in his shoulder, at the second wolf three paces off the bay mare, at Toghrul a pace behind me and Berke at the windward.

I watched her read me, and I understood that she was reading the thing she had sent north seventeen weeks ago and counting what the empire had done to it. She had cut the braid herself, with hands that were not steady, at a kitchen floor; she had bound the chest with the soldier's knot her own mother taught her; she had sent a daughter into a war meant for men, and she had not known, in all the weeks since, whether the war would send her back a corpse on a roll-book, or a broken thing, or nothing at all. Now the daughter stood in a wagon-door in a dead steppe-shaman's deel with a wolf at her boot and a prince at her back, and the mother's eyes went over every inch of her, slow, taking the count: the hair, the bow, the boots, the iron in the wolf's shoulder, the new hard set of the mouth that the orchard had not put there. I saw her finish the count. I saw what it cost her to finish it, and what it gave back. She had sent away a girl. She was looking at a soldier and an anda and a thing the empire would burn — and she was looking at her, still, whole, alive, come back up the road exactly as the strip of mutton-fat at the doorstone had promised across nineteen years that one day the daughter would.

She looked at me. And she said it, in the smallest voice, in the kitchen-tongue of Qiaojia — not the steppe-tongue, not the imperial, the voice she had used at the rim of a rice-cup at the New Year of my seventh year:

"Yulan."

I let my breath go.

"Yulan," she said again. And a third time, into the dark of the wagon: "Yulan. Daughter."

I could not speak. The breath went out of me and would not come back even, and I held what was left of it because there was nothing else holding me up.

And then I gave her the word I had said to no one in seventeen weeks, in the voice she had taught me at the spring sowing of my fourth year. "Mama." And again. "Mama." And, at one pace inside the door: "Mama. I have come."

She let go of her son's wrist. She rose — slow, after twenty-three days on a wagon-floor — and crossed the one pace between the wall and the door, and stopped a pace from me. She did not open her arms. She held them at her sides. She laid the back of her right hand over her own heart, and the back of her left over mine — the open gesture of an anda to an anda, the same gesture I had laid over Toghrul's heart on the seventeenth night of the prisoner-tent at the word Arsulan. Mother and daughter at the wagon-door, the same gesture.

The gesture of an anda.

She said it then in the steppe-tongue — the thing I had never known she carried behind her teeth all nineteen years and four months and eleven days — low, into the place above my heart:

"Arsulan. Daughter of Möngke-Mara of the Black Banner clan, granddaughter of Möngke-Dam of the bogdo-shamans at the bend of the Onon-Selga, great-granddaughter of the kam who held the drum at the bonding of the Khan Boroldai in the seventh year of his name." She drew a breath. "And that same kam held your cradle-board at the orchard at Qiaojia, in the third year of your name — my mother brought her south by way of a steppe-trader who was my own smuggler. She held the cradle-board half a watch, and she said into it, in the steppe-tongue, low — Arsulan. Little lion. Wait."

She looked at me. "You have waited."

I steadied myself against the wagon-door. "Mama," I said, in the kitchen-tongue.

"Yulan," she answered.

"Mama. Arsulan."

"Arsulan. Daughter. I have heard," she said, into the place above my heart — and she closed her arms.

She closed them at the back of my neck, where the hair had grown back three thumbs' breadth from the morning of the kitchen-floor, when she had set the shears to my braid with the steady hands of a woman whose hands were not steady, and had never once in nineteen years said my other name aloud.

She said it now. She held me, and she said it, and she did not let go, and I did not let go.

The boy rose from the windward wall. He had not written at the brush in eleven days; he had stopped speaking on the seventeenth; on the eighteenth he had said Mama; and on this day he had watched his sister come up the road from the Iron Gates with a wolf at her boot. He came to the door and stopped a pace away and looked at me.

"Sister," he said, in the smallest voice, in the kitchen-tongue.

I let go of my mother's neck, and knelt to him, and set the back of my hand to his right cheek — where the bone had grown out from the four-year-old at the orchard who once asked me, Where does my sister go in the orchard at night? — and where my mother, at the threshold-stone, had answered him: In her chest, Anshi. The wolf is in her chest. We do not speak of it.

"Anshi. Little brother," I said.

"Sister. The wolf," he said.

"The wolf is here."

"At three paces."

"At three paces."

His voice came hard and small. "Sister. I told Mama. On the seventeenth night I told Mama the wolf at the wheel-well was—" He stopped. He drew a breath, and made himself say it: "The wolf at the wheel-well was the wolf at the orchard."

I held the quiet a moment. "Anshi. It is. The wolf at the wheel-well is the wolf at the orchard, and the wolf at the orchard is Mama's, and the wolf at my boot is mine. They are one wolf in the bond and two in the flesh. They have been waiting, little brother."

"Sister. Father," he said.

I kept still. "I know."

"He had the cough. The second day. He had the brown cloth at his hand, and he set it down on the cot—" His voice went thin. "—and he didn't lift it again."

I let that settle into me. I had known it on the bond — the orange-peel man's courier had carried it north, and the wind off the ger's smoke-hole had carried it the rest of the way — but knowing a thing on the bond and hearing it in a twelve-year-old's cracked voice at a wagon-door are two different woundings, and the second went deeper than the first. My father had worked the salt-foundry at the second county for fifteen years to keep two mu of orchard and a daughter no county clerk could be allowed to look at too closely, and the foundry's iron had got into his lung and stayed there, and the empire that had taken his lung had then, at the end, dragged him onto a wagon to die on a road south, with a brown cloth at his hand for the blood, because his daughter had a wolf in her chest. He had said nothing against the Bureau's writ. The memorial would record that — the dignity of a southern subject who said nothing. It was not dignity. It was the same silence my mother had kept for nineteen years, the same the squad had kept for six months: the silence of people who have understood that the only protection they can give the marked is to give the empire nothing to read. My father had carried that silence to a cot on a Bureau wagon and set it down with the brown cloth, and not lifted either again. He had never had a wolf or a bond or a tongue of the steppe. He had only had us, and he had kept us by going quiet, all the way to the end.

"Little brother. Come," I said.

He came — at the slow uneven pace of a boy whose father had set a brown cloth on a cot and not lifted it again — into the space at the inside of my right arm, and set his forehead at the unlaced gap of the lamellar at my shoulder, and stood there. He was bigger than I had carried him. I had left a boy of eleven at the orchard who came to my shoulder; the wagon had given me back a boy of twelve who came near to my chin, all wrist and collarbone, the new length of him not yet filled in, his hair grown ragged past his ears and his cheeks gone hollow on twenty-three days of Bureau rations. I had thought, on every cold night of the march north and every silent watch at the prisoner-tent, of the small brother who watched ducks at the rice-pond and asked where his sister went in the orchard at night. The wagon had taken that brother and left this longer, harder, quieter one in his place, and I would have to learn him too, the way I was learning my mother, in pieces, on the ride north.

He did not weep. He had not wept in twenty-three days of the wagon. He stood, and breathed in, and breathed out, and then, into the lamellar at my shoulder, in the smallest voice, he wept — and went on weeping, the better part of a half-watch, while I held him. I did not tell him to stop. I had learned, somewhere north of the Wall, that there is a kind of weeping a person has to be allowed to finish, that you do not staunch it the way you staunch a wound but let it run clean, and that the holding is the whole of what is asked of you. So I held him on the bloodied brick at the wagon-door with the dead outriders at the lee and the snow coming down at the thumb-joint, and I felt his thin shoulders go through the long shudders of a boy giving up twenty-three days at once, and I kept still, and let him.

My mother set her left hand on the boy's shoulder and her right over my heart, and she kept the silence, and she did not weep. She had wept at the second cut of the shears, the morning of the kitchen-floor; she had wept nineteen years; she did not weep again now. She did not move.

"Daughter," she said at last, in the steppe-tongue.

"Mama."

"Arsulan."

"Mama. Mother."

"Come."

I came.

Belegt set his head on his paws at the lee of the wagon, the salt-iron at the third notch of his shoulder, and waited. The second wolf rose from the bay mare's lee and came up to the wagon and set his head against the back of my mother's right hand, and she laid her left hand on his head and did not look down.

"Brother. The bridge," she said, into the wolf's head.

Mother. The bridge, he answered, on the bond.

"South," she said.

Mother. North, he said.

She drew her breath even, and said it the way she had said the word that morning over the shears, in the kitchen-tongue of Qiaojia, into the wolf's head: "North." And again, with her teeth set: "North."

We went.
