The Felt at the Bend of the Onon
The yurt was a family's yurt at the third ring of the ordu at the bend of the Onon-Selga, the size of a hunter's ger and a half — one hoop of bent willow at the cap, a smoke-hole, felt-walls the colour of a tea-stained tooth, a door-flap of dehaired hide held to the willow by four thongs at four pegs, and a firepit at the centre that had burned three days.
It held, at the second watch of the night of the thirtieth, five souls. My mother at the windward, the boy at her right; the prince at the centre with the chestnut-leather saddle at his head; me at the lee, the wolf at my ankles; the bird hooded at the rafter. Berke was out at the windbreak with the spare string, where he had kept every third watch since the dawn-drum of the twenty-ninth, in the way of an old falconer who had warded the prince's bürkii at the third willow eleven days.
The fire burned low and even. My mother had not spoken since the door-flap of the central pavilion that afternoon. Anshi slept at her right; Toghrul slept at the centre; the wolf slept at my ankles. I sat up at the lee in the wool deel of Möngke-Dam, the lamellar at the foot of the felt, the binding-cloth off, the boots off.
I had not slept either. I had spent fifteen weeks of the muster learning to sleep in lamellar with the binding-cloth on and a hand near the bow, and the body does not unlearn a thing like that in a week of safety; it lay down in the wool deel and waited for the dawn-drum that would call it to drill, and when no drum came it lay awake and listened to the fire. I listened to it a long time. A dung-fire does not crack and spit the way a wood-fire does; it burns low and steady and breathes, a slow orange breathing at the centre of the felt, and the smoke went up dead-straight to the smoke-hole where a coin of black sky showed three or four stars, hard and small and very far. Out at the windbreak Berke coughed once, the dry cough of an old man in the cold, and was quiet. A horse stamped at the line. The river, somewhere off past the third ring, made its low unfrozen sound. There were five of us breathing in the yurt and a wolf and a bird, and the empire was three thousand li south and had a writ out on my name, and I was, for the first night in nineteen years, in a room where every person breathing knew what I was and not one of them wanted me to be less of it. I had not known a room could be that. I had not known to want it. I lay in it the way you lie in very hot water — carefully, distrusting the ease, waiting for it to turn.
My mother was looking at me. She had been looking at me a long while.
"Mama," I said, in the kitchen-tongue, across the fire.
"Daughter."
"You haven't slept."
"I haven't."
I breathed out. "Mama."
"Daughter. Anshi sleeps at my right," she said. "He has slept two days, since the door-flap of the central pavilion — for all the nights he did not sleep in the wagon on the salt-fork."
"Mama."
I looked at Anshi where he slept at her right, and I thought about the brother I had left a child and found, in a Bureau wagon on the salt-fork, a boy who had stopped being a child somewhere on the road south without my being there to see it happen. Twelve years old, and he had ridden three thousand li with our mother in the hands of the Bureau, watched our father go grey and then go still under the brown cloth, and held whatever a twelve-year-old holds when the only world he has is being taken apart around him a day at a time. He had not wept at the wagon when I came for them. He had looked at me with our father's flat steady look and said, in the kitchen-tongue, Sister. You came, the way a man confirms a thing he had decided to expect, and I had not known until that moment that a child could armour himself the way a soldier does. He had earned his sleep. He had been earning it the whole way south, and now at the windward of a fire at the bend of a river he had finally been allowed to put the armour down, and he slept like the dead, and I was glad of it the way you are glad of a thing that also breaks your heart.
She let her breath go, and said it into the felt. "Daughter. The shears."
"Mama. The shears."
"Yulan. The shears are at the kitchen at Qiaojia. Not here at the ordu — at the threshold-stone of the kitchen door, under the strip of mutton-fat the wife of Old Yang has set every dawn-drum since the twenty-third day."
I steadied. "Mama. The shears."
"Daughter."
"The shears at Qiaojia were the shears you held in two hands the morning of the kitchen-floor."
"They were."
"The shears you couldn't make close, at the third saying of Are you certain."
"Daughter."
I made myself say the rest. "The shears that made the first cut — iron on iron — and the second and third and fourth, and the braid that fell into my lap with the soft noise of a thing not yet dead. The shears you combed the cropped ends out with, at the slow pace of a woman who had cut the braids of the men of our house at every army-morning for three generations south of the Yellow River."
"Daughter."
I said, in the smallest voice, "Mama. The shears at the ordu tonight — they are at the line of nothing. There is no braid here to cut. No daughter to make a son of. No army-morning. There is only — Mama — the daughter."
She was quiet, and then she said it into the felt: "Yulan."
"Mama."
"Arsulan."
"Mama."
"Daughter," she said, in the kitchen-tongue. "The shears are not at the line of nothing."
I held the silence.
"The shears the morning of the kitchen-floor were my grandmother's shears," she said. "And my grandmother's were the shears of the kam who held the drum at the bonding of the Khan Boroldai — carried south at the taking of my own mother at the third year of the Wuding reign. For a hundred and twelve years that bone-handle cut the braid of every anda of the Black Banner at every army-morning of the clan." She steadied. "They were never the shears of a kitchen at Qiaojia, daughter. The morning I could not make them close, they were the shears of a kam of the Black Banner, at the seventh notch of the bone-handle, set to the back of the braid of a daughter who had been told at the orchard threshold that the wolf at the windward was the wolf in her chest. They were the clan's shears, on the morning of her riding out."
I let it carry. "Mama."
"I held them in two hands."
"You did."
"And I could not, in the breath of the third saying, make them close."
"You could not."
She drew a breath, and said, in the smallest voice: "Daughter. The hands that couldn't close them weren't the hands of a steady-handed woman who'd set your brother's dislocated finger straight when you were eleven and he was three. They were the hands of a daughter of Möngke-Dam of the bogdo-shamans — a daughter of the Black Banner who had been taken from this ordu thirty-one years before, and had not come back."
"Mama," I said.
"They closed," she said.
"They did."
"They closed in the soldier's knot a daughter of the Black Banner had taught herself at the inside of the rib, the third night of the spring sowing of her sixteenth year, in a southern trader's wagon, on the way to a marriage-cloth and a salt-foundry-man at the second county." She held the silence. "They closed."
I lay and listened to her say it, and I understood that she was not telling me about shears at all. She was telling me how she had survived nineteen years in a country that would have burned her for what she was — by carrying a thing from her own clan into the heart of the empire and keeping it whole and secret at a kitchen threshold, a strip of mutton-fat at a doorstone, a wolf at a windward wall, a name whispered over a cradle and then put under a stone. She had made a country out of a kitchen. She had made it for nineteen years, alone, with a husband who knew and a son who guessed and a daughter who did not, and the shears were the last piece of it, the clan's shears kept in an empire's kitchen, holding the count of everyone she loved against the day the count could come north.
I thought of all the small things of that kitchen I had walked past for nineteen years without reading. The mutton-fat I had taken for a widow's grief. The way she had taught my hands the soldier's knot in the binding-cloth at the spring sowing of my tenth year — for when you bind a wound, she had said, and I had believed her, and it had been true, and it had also been a steppe knot a daughter of the Black Banner sets at the inside of the rib, taught to a southern girl by a mother who could not say why she needed her to know it. The grandmother's whisper over the cradle. The wolf-shadow at the orchard wall that my father had called a story to keep the children in at dusk. She had hidden a whole country inside a smallholding at the third creek, and she had hidden it best of all from me, because I was the one the country was being kept for, and a thing kept for you is a thing you must not be told you are carrying until you are strong enough to carry it knowing. She had judged the morning. She had held the shears in two hands at the kitchen-floor and judged that the morning had come, and her hands had not been able to do it, and now I understood that her hands had not failed her — they had told her the truth her mouth could not, that the daughter she was sending out was not a son of the house going to a muster but a daughter of the Black Banner going home, and that the cut she was making was not the cut she had spent three generations' worth of army-mornings making, and that her hands knew it before she did.
She let it sit, and the fire breathed, and I thought of the shears lying in the dark at the kitchen at Qiaojia three thousand li south — a thing of bone and iron a hundred and twelve years old, set down at a threshold-stone in an empty house, under a strip of fat a neighbour renewed each dawn, holding by its mere being-there the count of everyone who had carried me. It was the strangest reliquary. Not a shrine, not a grave, not a name carved anywhere — only a pair of shears my mother could not make close on the morning she sent me out, left behind in the country we had fled, doing the one work shears can do when they are neither opened nor closed: holding. Holding the space. Holding the count.
She said it, in the smallest voice: "Yulan. Arsulan. Daughter. The shears at the kitchen at Qiaojia, under the mutton-fat — the shears the wife of Old Yang has never opened the door to take — are not at the line of nothing. They are at the kitchen. And they are the count: one daughter, one mother, one boy, two wolves, a bird, an old falconer, a prince — here at the ordu at the bend of the Onon-Selga." She drew her breath even. "The shears are the count."
I drew mine even too. "The shears at Qiaojia hold the count," I said. "Mama. Tomorrow."
"Daughter."
"Tomorrow at the third hour past dawn your second sister comes up the lee — Möngke-Tara, third sister of Möngke-Dam, your sister of the ordu — from the willow on the second creek, with the drum and the willow-stick and the bone-handle shears of the kam who held the drum at Boroldai's bonding. She will set the drum at her knee, and strike it once, and say, in the steppe-tongue, Mother. Sister. Welcome home."
She set her teeth. "Daughter." And then: "The kurultai."
I had not, until that night, let myself look full at what the kurultai meant for the thing it would make of me. I had crossed a bridge and a watchtower and a wagon-string to bring my mother out of the empire's hand, and I had thought of the end of the road as a kind of stopping — a ger at the Iron Gates, the boots burned at a door-stone, the laugh Möngke-Dam had promised. I understood now, lying at the lee of the fire while my mother said the word kurultai into the felt, that there was no stopping at the end of this road. The Khan would set a war-arrow at a third notch and seven clans would ride for a pass that had been the empire's eight hundred years, and I would be at the head of it, the witch the empire had named and the daughter the Black Banner had named, and the war that was coming would be a war fought partly over the name in the corner of a dead man's sheet. I had wanted, riding north, to be no longer hunted. I had not understood that to stop being hunted I would have to become something an empire would raise an army against — that the opposite of prey is not safety but war. My mother said the word into the felt and I lay and held the shape of it and did not flinch from it, because I had stopped, somewhere on the white grass, being a person who could afford to flinch from the shapes of things.
"At the kurultai of the seventh day of the twelfth month, the Khan sets the war-arrow at the post of the central pavilion, at the third notch, where the third notch has been set a hundred and twelve years — and he calls to the seven thousand: Black Banner. The Iron Gates. The war-arrow."
"Daughter."
"And the Khan gives the war-arrow to his elder son."
She breathed out. "Daughter. Toghrul."
"Toghrul. The elder son holds the war-arrow, sets the third notch at the post, calls Black Banner. The Iron Gates. And the anda of Toghrul stands at the war-arrow at his side."
She steadied. "Yulan."
"Arsulan."
"Arsulan. The anda."
"The anda. The daughter of Möngke-Mara of the Black Banner clan."
She breathed. "Daughter."
"Mama. The shears at the kitchen at Qiaojia, under the mutton-fat at the threshold-stone, hold the count of one daughter and one mother and one boy and one prince and two wolves and a bird and a Khan and an old falconer and a kurultai and a war-arrow and a third notch and the Iron Gates pass."
She let her breath go. "Daughter. They hold."
I set my teeth. "Mama. Sleep."
She was quiet a moment. "Yulan. Arsulan. Daughter. I will sleep."
She set her head down at the windward of the fire and closed her eyes, and the Arsulan she had carried at the back of her throat for nineteen years and four months and eleven days she let go at last, and she slept. The second wolf at her side set his head on his paws and breathed slow. The fire held.
I lay a while after she had gone quiet and listened to the breathing of the yurt sort itself into the slow rhythms of sleep — my mother at the windward, Anshi at her right, Toghrul at the centre with his hand fallen open on the felt the way a soldier's hand falls open only when he has finally, somewhere safe, agreed to stop holding the bow. The wolf at my ankles slept with his flank against my shin, the iron a memory in him now, his breath going in and out under my hand where I had laid it on his ribs without deciding to. I thought of the count my mother had named — one daughter, one mother, one boy, one prince, two wolves, a bird, a falconer, a Khan — and I added to it the ones who were not in the yurt and would never be: Möngke-Dam in the snow at the second ridge, my father under a brown cloth in a Bureau wagon south, Bald Wei at a flogging-post he had walked toward with his eyes open, Old Crow and Liu and Mountain at a squad-fire three thousand li away holding the small clean angle of the beak, Old Yang with his hand over his heart on a cold cap of brick. The count my mother held in the shears at Qiaojia was not only the living. It was everyone who had agreed to carry me, the dead ones too, and the carrying did not stop when they did. That was the thing I had not understood at the orchard and understood now in the dark of a yurt at the bend of the Onon: that you do not get to set down the ones who carried you and did not make it. You carry them the rest of the way. The count holds them. I held them, in the dark, one name at a time, until the holding turned soft at the edges and became the orchard.
I closed my eyes, and slept, and dreamed of an orchard south of the Yellow River.
In the dream my mother stood at the doorstone of the kitchen door at Qiaojia with a soft piece of apple in her palm, and set it down in the old ritual of a mother told her daughter is riding south, and did not look up, because she knew. In the dream the wife of Old Yang came to the kitchen door at the slow pace of a neighbour at the dawn-drum of the twenty-third day, and set a strip of mutton-fat at the threshold, and did not look up, because she knew. In the dream my mother laid her left hand over the back of the wife of Old Yang's right hand at the threshold-stone, and the two women stood there, and were still. They were two women who had set fat at two doorstones for nineteen years against the same far country, one of them a daughter of the Black Banner in a southern marriage-cloth and one of them a southern wife who had been let into the secret and kept it as her own, and in the dream they did not need to speak, because everything that could be said between them had already been said in nineteen years of two strips of fat at two threshold-stones at the third creek, in the kitchen-tongue of Qiaojia, which is a tongue made not of words but of the things women set down at doorstones for the ones they cannot follow.
I held the dream a long while, and slept until the dawn-drum of the thirty-first morning.
