第二章 ——《礼泉第三门》

五更鼓响,永崇坊坊门栓抬起,那声音她这十八月里以种种不同的心境听过太多回。今晨听来,倒像是一桩她终被准许去做的事。

她未曾合眼。她和衣穿着行装躺在榻上,依旧习,先数过梁上椽木,又数过亡夫写下的、她始终不肯启读的那封信上的姓名,再后来——数到那数算已渐成她未曾允诺的祷词之时——她转而去数自己宅子与西市之间的诸坊,向西略偏北,凡十二,每一坊各有其门、其栓、其须以礼相待的守卒。四更天她便起身,换上了灰袍。

道家之灰,照《唐律疏议》并非法服,仅一色耳。她十三岁那年曾在父亲面前以极小极私的言辞辩过此点,把父亲逗笑了。唐律可禁一袍,尚不能禁一色。寡妇取未烧之素陶色为衣,于律之内,亦在天明鼓前任何按时坐堂的吏员目力之外。这样的灰袍她有两件。昨夜灯下,她将那件较好的刷过两遍。

院中,周嬷嬷立于厨门,端着一碗小米粥——这一早,她断不会与人争辩。婉君站着吃了四勺。她并不饿。空腹无用,更甚于饱腹。

「娘子。」

「嬷嬷。」

「骑骒马还是骟马?」

「骒马。」

「骒马正动情。」

「骒马较慢,又不会见了粟特骆驼便惊逸。备骒马。」

周嬷嬷的嘴角微微一抿,那是她在马事上被人驳回时才有的样子。十八月里,凡论马事,她每回都对。她便去后厩唤起小厮。

那骒马名作春雪,是某年雪落两次时买来的,今已十一岁,胸口窄,怕鸽子。婉君素不擅骑马;六岁那年她便对父亲如此说过,父亲极郑重地颔首应允,并未强求她精于此道。春雪是她最不为难地不擅长的那一匹马。小厮托她上马,她略无姿态地坐上鞍,把灰袍的下摆铺过马侧——那是她十二岁时父亲让裁缝特地分裁的式样,好叫她在马上是循吏之女,而非乘车的乡间小娘。

天明鼓第五段,她出门西去。

永崇坊以西的大街灰白而空。光尚未自定。沿街的铺面尚未启板;那条入了上午便满是车马、卖水郎与粟特驼队的大街,此刻只是一条长长的、被扫净的夯土,含着自渭水来的薄薄晨霭。一名卖水郎自东来,扁担吱呀作响,眼神空平——他亦是一夜未睡。一支金吾巡骑自西过,四人,为首者冠上嵌着小小的漆制徽记。为首者看了她一眼,记下那一色灰,并未减速。这时辰里独行马上的妇人,将将合于律法;着道家灰袍独行的妇人,几近一纸凭信。那都尉抬两指作礼,是一位低阶御史对一位他尚不全信的吏员所行的那种礼。她以同等不确者之间所用的颔首回了他。

她经过自家所居坊后巷与大街相接的拐角,并未朝那巷里看。昨夜她已记下,那躲在自家排水沟里的男子那一缕轻微而干燥的声响。四更前他已离去——她听他走的:在后巷的夯土上向东,再沿安邑坊后那条长巷北行,那双靴子的纹路她已自洼水中读过。她尚不知那是何人之客。她不会回头去找他。回头的妇人,是知道自己被窥视的妇人;而知道自己被窥视的妇人,是日后那颗脑袋之价值将颇有人愿打听的妇人。

鼓楼立于皇城西南角,晨光下显得宽阔、矮敦、寻常。楼顶的鼓尚未敲响第二通晨鼓。她驰过,并未抬头。鼓正——她曾在一次平康坊酒宴上听人说起——每敲一杖可贿一钱。她尚不知日后是否须贿鼓正。早晚总须。

朱雀大街自城中央往南而走,她横越处宽一百五十步,纵在此刻,那宽阔仍是一道她以「冷」字感知的事。东侧路边有三名驭夫候市开门,其中一人正自袖中取饼来吃,望着她,神色并不无情,那是男子打量任何一匹看起来比骑者稍机敏些的马时所有的样子。她以步速横街,转向西。

朱雀以西,坊里之色便换。官署的朱门退在身后;此处之门更老、更杂——有的朱漆,有的素木,一二门漆了那种钴蓝,乃河西粟特商人所喜,因钴矿在于阗价廉,他们东来时便携带了甚多。门后宅院比永崇坊更为宏阔,结构亦更紧致。她曾在一封市舶报文里读到:长安城里一座粟特之宅,乃一座四合院二层楼合围,上层寝、下层贾,门上裹铁,盖其家窖藏银与乳香,并非寄于钱庄。她记下了那制式。她从未入过其中一处。

至礼泉坊门前,萨保的副手已候在那里。

正是那报子所描述之人。半突厥血裔,比萨保的寻常仆从高出一头,宽颧平脸,是唐之边塞面孔,身着粟特商人的素色深羊毛短袍,右袖口绣着安氏一族那小而反复的几何记号,袖缘已磨出光泽,可知用了一年有余。他的刀鞘悬在报子所言之处:袍下,左侧,正是族中卫士所佩之位。他并未拔刀。他作揖。

「娘子,」他言,用一口好唐话。然后,唯恐她疑他唐话不够好,又以更好的唐话续道:「娘子,仆乃阿斯潘,西市萨保副邸之人。家主遣仆来迎。」

「阿斯潘。」

「娘子。」

「你家主原约我在午鼓之前。」

「在天明鼓第二通之前,娘子。仆主自四更便已立于门下。」

她记下「四更」二字。萨保的副手已在门下立了一个时辰。若阿斯潘所言不虚,萨保自身则已立了两个时辰。萨保岂有立于本坊门下之理。萨保岂有于任何时辰立于任何门下之理;其全部尊严,本就在于他坐在一间屋内。萨保立于门下,是因为萨保不愿叫任何旁人在场,做那目睹她抵达之人。这要么是一桩异乎寻常之大礼,要么是一桩防范。

她自幼习于辨认防范。

「那我便不令他久候。」

骒马随阿斯潘步入坊门。礼泉坊内的街——「礼泉」者,「甘泉」之意,乃两百年前某汉吏因坊内一口井而命之名,那井早已水坏,被砖石填封——一进门便骤窄。屋宇相挨而立;底层向街上微探,是粟特木与土砖式样所好,上层廊台几乎在头顶相接,致使头顶天色只余一条窄长的灰带。坊气分三层迎她而上:先是潮窖皮革的气味,再是开放香料摊上熏入墙壁的藏红花气——今日那些摊不会启板,但壁中余香尚在;二者之下,是一股热而尖的兽气。她想,那是坊南尽头骆驼栏的味道——安氏一族在那里以铁网围成驼栏,靠南墙系驮驼。骆驼晓得时辰,已在抱怨。不远处某只正发出长长的呜咽,是骆驼被拴久了过其惯卧之时所发的那种长哨。

她未及感知坊之其余,先感知到了那只骆驼,便也将此事记下。一户人家二十八个时辰未让其骆驼卧下,乃是一户人家二十八个时辰未做任何一事。

阿斯潘领她沿内街向西,再南折第二条小巷。第三个转角是一条更狭的巷子,几为夹弄,两壁皆是商家宅院的高白墙。第三个转角的尽头,便是礼泉坊的第三门——并非坊门(坊门在南),乃是自内街数起的第三处院门,按本地说法即「第三门」。她昨夜已在蜡板上画过。她不必再看蜡板。她画得不差。

安宅之门漆过,却非朱色;漆作深紫褐——粟特祆教徒凡有丧之门皆以此色,那褐色已旧,旧了数年;漆面四角已起裂,作小三角纹,可知此户自老安氏过世以来再未重漆此门。门旁悬一铜灯架。灯熄了。芯已抽走。

粟特之家——她记得亡夫某册巡按附注里写过——只要家中尚有一人在世,门首灯必燃。芯既抽走,便是有人新近告诉这扇门:门内已无一人在世,须为之续火。

阿斯潘并不叩门。他以掌平贴门面,三指展开,拇指内屈;持此姿凡四息之久;门便自内开一掌之缝,一张粟特男子的面孔——窄鼻,目深而暗,眼眶红——自缝中望出,看见她的灰色,门便向内开了。

她尚未下马。她坐在鞍上,自开着的门望进前院。

按市舶卷宗,安氏院之前院乃一方铺石庭院,约五十步乘三十步,门在东,正堂在西,北为厢廊,南为香料库。婉君画得不差。石板潮深;春露未消,因昨日起院中无人燃炭炉。庭院正中,本应是主人接待贵客之处,立着一架高大的彩绘屏风。

那架不花剌屏风。

纵在此时辰、又自马上望去,亦是一件极美之物。六扇,每扇约一人之高,绘于绷紧的丝面,髹漆,关节以錾铜束之。所绘者为狩猎——萨珊之式,骑细马的男子穿过石榴树构成的样化林中追逐羚羊,马尾依古法盘结,骑者头巾随风。值钱两千贯。据传,安氏少夫人曾用它来晾湿布。

如今上面没有湿布。代之者,在自左数第三扇上,有一道长长的暗痕,形如一只手腕慢慢拖下的印记;又在所绘羚羊颈部高度上,有一片圆而暗的褐——旧褐,昨夜之褐——晨光尚未将其晾干。有人以带血之手碰过屏风。所碰者并非为擦手,而是为撑稳自己。

她记下。

她下了马。下马时,她照例在心中收拢那一点小小的内里的庄重——「我不擅马」,六岁时她已说过,且她确是说对了的——阿斯潘自她手中接过缰绳,递给一个自门旁柵中走出的少年。少年是粟特人,约莫十二岁,发短,剃作不花剌仆童之样,眼亦如阿斯潘一般红。少年并不看她。少年看那骒马。他接缰绳的手在抖。

一户人家有这许多抖动之手,便不是凭巧合维持了二十八个时辰之静的一户人家。

「萨保。」阿斯潘言。

萨保立于门内。是一位六旬出头的瘦小男子,粟特商人式样的灰夹白胡须梳过领前,头戴唐之官帽——那是经造册的外侨头领所佩的小礼幞头——在这时辰里,全城再无第二个萨保会把帽子戴在头上。她想,他这帽子是自昨日傍晚起便戴着的,不曾摘下。

「崔娘子,」萨保言。他作揖。他那唐话,是一位五十岁上方过了在籍考校之人慎重的唐话,平生在唐话里说出之言,未有一句不是先在粟特语里思量过的。「仆乃罗山,安氏之人。仆以亡兄、其亡子、其家中亡妇之名,迎接娘子;并恳娘子于此墙垣之内予以谨慎之礼。」

「应当。」她言。

她还礼——是她对与他同阶之人所行的礼,不更深,亦不更浅——并因礼制所要,加之曰:「妾受御史台之托,因未备而亡者之斋仪而来,凭魏夫人庵堂出具的凭文,所行诸事,皆在贵宅监视之下。」

罗山静听。他是一位身板坐得极直的小个子。她忽而想起一桩颇为不情愿想起之事——这位老人曾在天宝四载的痘疫中葬过两位成年子女,并曾穿着同一袭紫褐之袍,在二人公祭上立过。她读过那一年萨保的年册,二死皆有记录。彼时此时,他都未曾让自己的脸面奢享一丝私之哀。

「亡兄之堂,」他言,「在廊之尽头。死者皆在。仆未允人移动一物。仆唯允将门首之灯熄灭,那是吾家之礼,是火之礼,娘子不必入此礼。崔娘子。」

「是。」

「监察御史副使未至。」

她记下,这不是一问。萨保正以他那小心的方式告知她一事。御史台并未派副使来。御史台事实上尚未正式知此命案。裴中丞之所以遣她代副使前来,是因为副使尚不能被遣——萨保尚未正式上报;而萨保已决定,不在一位他被告知可信的女冠先入此堂之前,正式上报。

「萨保。」她言。

「娘子。」

「西市市署可有知会?」

「市署,」罗山极平稳地言,「已由仆侄之幼者,于昨日午后第三时,以走差之手知会。市署于第四时遣一副使来仆门下。那副使」——他面上做出一种既非笑亦绝非笑之状——「言其不能于祆教家丧时入门,恐冒犯于火,遂自承将此事押到明日第七时再行立案,免得吏员误了晚饭。」

「他收了一笔。」

「崔娘子。」

「几重?」

老人与她目光相接。她忽而明白,这是一位极想与她相投之人,而此生未曾负担得起这一份奢侈。

「三两。」他言。

她不语。她将此数记下。

「不大之钱便足以令市署噤声,」萨保言,「然而此数亦足以令仆得知何人付了它。仆尚未决意将如何处置此知。仆——崔娘子,仆老矣。仆将「三两」一数告知娘子,是因这一钱与娘子之事将有干系。今日之内,则与仆之事无干。」

她垂首。那一垂,不全是承知之礼,是收礼之礼。他递给她一物,她须背着走。他告诉她,他知谁贿了市署;告诉她,他不会以此知行事;告诉她,她不该指望他会。他更以「三两」一数之精,告诉她,副使受贿时他就在屋内。一笔数到两的钱,是经证人数过之钱。萨保亲眼见了贿赂他的那一笔。

她不会替他问他何以如此。

「萨保。」

「娘子。」

「我即入内。」

「仆之侄陪娘子同入。」

他略一转首,廊道入口处——方才她未曾望见,可见那人立得极静——一名男子自前院光下走出。

他是粟特人,骨长,面颊狭窄,是安氏自母族承袭来的那种波斯式样的面相,年约二十八,瘦而高,着粟特祆教徒为近亲服丧时所穿之素白未漂之衣。发束于脑后;昨夜未曾刮面。他未睡。他想必也未坐下。他立得静而耐,是那等已在门槛前久候之人——已细想过门槛被越过时自己该说何话,并在反复斟酌数句之后,决意一句也不说之人——所有之姿。

他的眼是灰的。她未曾料到是灰的。她原料想是褐。

他走至她身前三步,作揖。那是同阶妇人之间,少年男子所行之揖,非家人亦非外人。他比唐人多按半拍才直起身——那是粟特之礼。

「崔娘子。」他言。

「安公子。」

「家叔之宅感娘子之降。」

他的唐话极佳。佳得正是一位异邦出身之士子所有的那种佳:句法略嫌过于正式,措辞较境况高了半度。他乃由汉师授课,师者甚善,且师者并非长安人——「干」字音里有极淡的河西圆音。她记下他的唐话。她记下那灰眼。她记下他双手垂于体侧之状——右手略高于左手——那是一位日常佩刀、今日未佩之人无意之中所养之习。素白之衣腰间无鞘。

他望了她一眼,一次,是报子所描述的那种谨慎之无神。谨慎之无神,是她自父亲外堂中熟见的一张面孔:是一位已决意不让人读懂自己、却尚未决意此决意是否得当之人之面孔。他持这无神约二息。然后,在嘴角左侧极微一滑——不是笑,绝非笑那样粗的事——只是一位男子在不由自主之间承认,他所听说之妇人确是眼前之人,且这要么是宽心,要么是难处,他尚未决意是哪一种。

「您是崔娘子。」他言。

「正是。」

「家叔六个月前曾把令夫之名写入家中账簿。」

她原欲依罗山之手势走过他,赴廊。她未走过。她止步。

「家夫,」她言,「已亡十八月。」

「是。」

「令叔将一位亡者之名写入账簿。」

「是。」

「我明白了。」

那一刹,她并未明白。她依他所言之形式将此句记下。粟特商行账簿非纪念之册;不会将亡者之名写入。或是老安氏私下另立一种以名义记账之法——而粟特商行并无此法——或是老安氏并不相信她的丈夫已亡。第二种可能,被她思量过一息之久,便属那等她已训练自己记下、随即关进她为「工作中不愿正视之物」所留之小屋的那扇门后之事。

她将之关入门后。那扇门是铁的。

「等。」她言,「等出堂之后。」

「等出堂之后。」他应。

他退后一步。他以长指一引——那是一位由汉师授业、其师又由其母授以粟特礼之人所有之手势——指向廊。

她走。石板在她靴下略微作响——黎明第二时辰庭院之干,正自西沙漠吹来的风将余湿剥尽。廊是有顶的甬道,宽四步,自前院贯至正堂,纵贯院之长轴。头顶之梁以粟特商家所好之朱与深绿交替而绘;廊之右壁——即南壁——每隔一段悬挂一幅不花剌几何样式的小小绣件,每幅约一掌之宽,以粟特绣针上明快利落的羊毛绣成,边缘已因常被触摸而磨损。她记下那些绣件。共七幅。粟特之礼,家中绣件乃每位在世成员出生时所定之小小祖牌。墙上挂了七幅。廊尽头有一钉空着。

七幅之中有一钉空着,她想,要么是某幅取下清洁,要么是某幅取下乃因其所纪念之人已自此宅出走。她记下空钉。

廊之尽头,正堂之门开着。两位粟特妇人立于门槛,皆已年迈,皆着素白丧服。她们让开。她们并不看她。其一握着另一之手。

她跨过门槛。

正堂横贯院之广阔,是一间长而浅的屋子,由西壁上高小之窗采光。窗已为黎明而开,因死者之堂未行礼前不得燃火,晨光便淡淡地铺过地面。地以粟特之式铺织席,边缘饰深红。屋之正中是一张餐席——长,矮,粟特之式,两侧置茵而非凳——餐席四周,则是死者。

她数了一遍。

报子说「合家」。裴中丞说「合家」。她原说「七人」。此处只有六。

她极静地立在门口,且这一早,尚未择定该对自己少了一人有何感受。六具尸身按席而陈,席上摆了六位。是六位。不是七位。

她错了。

她将「我错了」一句记入她为此事所留之小室——那小室并不拥挤。

安那夏——报子叫他「安那夏」,那是波斯之名;她尚无资格在心中以此名唤之——已立于她肩侧。他于她身后跨入此堂。他不看那席。她想,他已看那席看得够了。

「几人?」她言。

「六。」安那夏言。

「家籍册载七人。」

「是。」

「少的是何人?」

「我姑母达提斯,」他言,「在礼泉坊祆祠后房。前夜她未在此席用饭。她在祠中行妇人之祷。」

「达提斯活着。」

「达提斯活着。」

「那么死者六,失者一——是那婢女。贵宅留在厨下之女。」

他一时未答。她感到他在作答的决意里取舍;她听见他择此言时极微的一吸气。

「是。」他言。「那女子去了。她名阿罗珂。」

她让他这一句答在她身侧坐下,与那间小小存放之室相挨。她将日后,再把「阿罗珂」一名取下,置于光中翻看。此刻她不取。此刻席上有六具尸身,她已就其中一具错算;在她于此堂行走的三十步之内、于此宅之物尚无人移动的唯一一次良机之内,她须就其余诸具不错。

她迈步上前。

她未先赴席。她先去南窗——已为晨光而开——背对屋子,望向南窗外的小院:厨下院,窄,有墙,正中一覆口井,远墙下一矮门;据市舶图所记,由此可通往香料库。井以粟特之式作低砖盖顶,覆木盖。盖在井上。井盖砖边一圈薄薄苔藓如晕。在井盖之南弧——即近厨门之弧——上,苔藓被刮去一道。一道干净的弧,约莫她的一掌长,露出砖色。在晨光里看,那像一抹笑。

她记下那一笑。

她转身。她绕席而行。她尚未看诸面。

席以粟特之式而设,乃她读过但未亲见之式:长方形,六位,每侧三人;主位居东端,朝日所升之处,先映其面包。面包已在席上。是一张扁圆的粟特馕,掰为六块,每块依礼置于一位之侧。块缘已干,块心尚柔。这面包之掰,至多在三十时辰之内。席心小碟中之芫荽——茎犹绿,仅切口处微褐。一茎芫荽切了三十时辰、置于密闭之堂,其茎犹绿。倘在别一间屋里,她或会赞此芫荽之鲜。

酒盏共六。席南三,席北三。两两成对。三具乃粟特之物——鋬铜,盏沿錾以不花剌作坊的小石榴纹;另三具乃汉物——白釉,正是御窑出品,富庶汉户宴上所用之标式盏。三与三。粟特之三在南。汉之三在北。主家坐南。客坐北。

席上有客。

她记下「席为客而设」一事。报子言「合家」。报子未言「合家与客」。她此时正在重核己之算数。六位,三主,三客。客一不在。主三皆死于席间。

她继续绕席。

她至席之东端主位前。安氏之长——族长——罗山之兄——所卧之姿,恍若一位自茵上前扑、又被一不谙粟特族长该如何端坐之人极柔地扶回靠柱端坐之人。他头微偏右。口闭。目闭。两手皆叠于膝上,那是仵作为佛家停尸所叠之小心之姿。粟特族长不以佛家之式停尸。粟特族长死时其手不由任何旁人安排,唯由「拿萨拉」——家中沐尸者——为之;而「拿萨拉」在死后三十时辰内不得动手,因身体被视作不洁,须俟污气消散。此宅之「拿萨拉」尚未入此堂。这一双手是旁人所叠。

她俯身。这一早,于此堂之内,安那夏面前,她不去触老人之手。她只看。他左手拇指甲上有一道极淡的月白——是淤伤一日后甲下血气聚而成印之色。他曾撞过拇指。新近。她想,在这两日之内。

她继续绕。

族长之二子——本由人「使之坐」于席南之二、三位上。长子面甚白,口微张,身略向席倾。其口角有一道暗痕——她想不是血;那是稀薄液体干在须中之暗。她俯身近看,未触。气味淡而略带松脂之意。她想到她在一封河西商路药材进口的市舶报中读过之苦草——「钩吻」,南方藤本,剂量足小,可致徐缓之气滞,状似安睡之死。钩吻自安南入。她在亡夫书房读过的南方丝香舱单上,安氏之族并未持其牌照。这一户中有人在饮钩吻。判其口角之痕与气味之淡,剂量并不大。一位男子饮如此小剂,本应察觉。

他未察觉。是酒在替它递入。

她过次子。她过长妇——其首甚柔地倾于自家肩上,作长夜小时倦憩之状。她过次妇与其侄。她至席之西端,那里既无坐席,亦无尸身,亦无座位——而在席之西端的席垫上,有一道极淡之印:一方茵的轮廓,本应在此,今已不在。

茵被移走了。

她转向安那夏。

「此席本设七位。」她言。

「六位。」

「七位。席之西端有一茵被取走了。」

他第一次望向那席。他看她手之所及处那一方反折较缓的席痕——她尚未指——他便已见她所见。他向前迈出半步。他止住了。

「您说得对,」他言,「本是七位。」

「却只有六具尸身。」

「是。」

「而第七位本在席之足端,正与令叔之首相对。」

「是。」

「依粟特席礼,席之足端乃上客之位。」

他看她——比他原本须看的多了半息。他极平稳地言:「崔娘子知吾族席礼。」

「崔娘子读过两百户粟特之家的市舶卷宗,」她言,「亦在亡夫书房读过萨保三年之年册。」

他将此一一收下。她见他并不为之意外。在今晨之前,已有人向他提过她,他尚未决意是否要信;而他此刻正在那内里小小地把那「之事」之分量调高。

「席上本有客。」她言,「坐于上客之位。」

「席上本有客。」

「他自席上被搬走。」

「他自席上被搬走。」

「他便是此宅中不复在此之第七人。」

「崔娘子。」

「安公子。」

他略停一拍。堂内极静。南窗外的晨光,已成为正色之晨。前院某处那骆驼又呜咽了一声抱怨。更近处——近得多——老「拿萨拉」低声诵祷之声,她未察觉地已经开始,在以一种她所不识的粟特语铺出徐缓的字句之形,但她将其记下,因她将凡事尽记,以备日后她将识得此祷之时。

「那第七人,」安那夏言,「便是家叔本约于前夜第七时之客。据家叔在厨下板上所写,其客为『东市汉人』。家叔未书其姓。家叔于此宅之惯例,凡客之姓不愿令其家中妇人以姓问起者,则于板上不书其姓。」

「厨下板。」

「在厨下。未拭。」

「带我去看。」

他略一低首。他向堂之南门一引——即通往那有「笑井」的厨下院之门。她去。他随她两步之后——这是男子对工作中之妇人所有之礼。

她在门口止步。她在门口转身,再看一次此堂——因下一次她再入此堂时,尸身已不在原位。她将其定格。她在心里走一遍,逐位走过:族长之叠手,长子口角之痕,次子之倾斜之角,二位儿妇与其侄,馕之六块,犹绿之芫荽,三铜盏与三瓷盏,席之足端那本应放茵而今不放茵的第七空位。她定格了前院那架不花剌屏风第三扇上的暗痕。她定格了廊尽头的空钉。她定格了萨保「三两」之数。她定格了门首灯抽去之芯。她定格了那不准卧下的骆驼。

她出门,到了厨下院。井上的「笑」依然在井砖南弧上对她笑。她这一早不去到井前。井可以等。厨下门距她右手三步;门内之板上,老安氏在前夜以她尚未见过之笔,写下了一行有关「东市汉人」之事——他未曾选择记下其姓。

她横院。她不抬头去看廊上之高窗——她已感到,无须转首,一位妇人——或许是达提斯,那位活着的——自上方望着她。她记下那一动作。她将日后命名之。

「门久闭则成冢。」她想。

厨下之门未闭。门半掩。板亦如安那夏所言,悬于门内,皮绳一系,旁挂粉笔。板一面粟特字,一面唐字。唐字一面朝外。

板上之言为八字。

她读一遍。她读两遍。

她将一手按上门框,让自己稳住——是她在工作真正始之前,被给予今日第一桩小而平、私下里之一击之后所容许自己的,那短短半息之顿。然后她将此句记下。她为定格再读一遍。她不让自己的面孔,在此厨下、在安那夏面前、在今晨此时辰,对此句做出任何反应。

那八字是:东市张氏,七刻,茶罢留饭。

东市汉商一家。张。一姓而已;那是长安城内单家便有两千户之姓,其中颇有许多家在东市开铺;而她亡夫——十八月前已死——在她书案上漆盒中一张她尚未拆读之纸条上,曾写下一串姓,其中有一姓为「张」。

她将板翻过。粟特字一面有三行,乃她所不识之手。

「上写,」他言,「『若那汉猪再不请自来,吾将放犬于他,向京兆尹自承之。』乃家叔之笔。据行首小记之日,作于前日清晨。汉猪者,」——他顿了一拍;他择了——「家叔所不喜之人。」

「东市之汉人。」

「东市之汉人。」

「正是夜里犬未被放出之客。」

「崔娘子。」

「是,」她言,「我明白了。」

她这次确明白了。她将「汉猪」记下。她将族长那一晨之笔记下——他清晨写下要放犬于客,傍晚却同那客同席而食。一位男子早间写下此言,晚间却招待此人,是一位在那块晨板与那张晚席之间,被人迫令对一位他已对自家厨下宣称不愿礼待之人讲礼之男子。被何所迫,她尚不知。「为势所执」,萨保之副或可如此言之——这一句她尚未自任何人口中听过,但于午鼓之前,她将自萨保自家口中听过它。

「之后再请你告诉我,」她言,极沉静,第一次以同等高度与他目目相对,无以距离作礼,「令叔本被求做何事,以为这位『东市之汉猪』;又何以本已决意不做,却又决意做之。我并不求你尽告。我只求你告我令叔被求做何事。倘你言谎,我能辨。我不会因此谎被冒犯。我只会因此谎被掣肘。我与你之间,自此刻起至午鼓之间,可彼此用一程。午鼓之后,便须于他人有用。」

他望着她。谨慎之无神已自其面上散去。代之者,她第一次看见一种她可读之神色。那神色非惊。乃是一位男子内心小小之承认——某事他先前已被人告知,而这一回他自一种他未曾料及之嗓音中又听到了一遍。

「崔娘子,」他言,「我可告您者,我必告。其余者,俟我可告之时,再告。」

「由何人允?」

「由我自身。」

她将「由我自身」记下。她将那灰眼记下。她将他立于厨下门旁、丧服素白、右手略高于左手、那无刀之男子无意识的习惯,皆记下。

Chapter Two

The Third Gate of Liquan

The dawn drum sounded at the fifth watch and Yongchong's gate-bar lifted with a sound she had heard, in eighteen months, in too many shapes of mood. This morning it sounded like a thing she was permitted to do.

She had not slept. She had lain on her bed in her travelling coat and counted, by old habit, the timbers in her ceiling, and then the names her husband had written on the only letter she would not read, and then — when the counting had begun to be a kind of prayer she had not given permission for — the wards between her house and the Western Market, west and a little north, twelve of them, each with its own gate and its own bar and its own guardsman to be civil to. She had risen at the fourth watch and put on her grey.

Daoist grey was not, by the Tang Code, a vestment. It was a colour. She had argued the distinction once in front of her father, at thirteen, in a small private way that had made him laugh. Tang law could prohibit a robe; it could not yet prohibit a shade. A widow who chose the grey of un-fired clay was within the law and outside the immediate notice of any clerk likely to be at his desk before the dawn drum. She had two of these robes. She had brushed the better one twice last night, while the lamp burned.

In the courtyard Nanny Zhou stood at the kitchen door with a bowl of millet she would not, this morning, have argued about. Wanjun ate four spoonfuls standing. She was not hungry. She would be more useless on an empty stomach than on a full one.

"Mistress."

"Nanny."

"The mare or the gelding."

"The mare."

"The mare is in season."

"The mare is the slower of the two and will not bolt at a Sogdian camel. Saddle the mare."

Nanny Zhou's mouth made the small shape it made when she had been overruled on a point of horseflesh. She had been right about horseflesh, in eighteen months, every time. She went and woke the boy at the back stall.

The mare was named Spring Snow because she had been bought in a year when the snow had come twice. She was eleven, narrow-chested, and afraid of pigeons. Wanjun was bad with horses; she had said so to her father at six, and her father had agreed, gravely, and had not made her good at horses. Spring Snow was the horse she was bad at most kindly. The boy gave her a leg up and she settled in the saddle without grace and arranged the grey skirts of her robe over the horse's flank in the divided way her father had had a tailor cut for her at twelve, so that she could be a magistrate's daughter on a horse and not a country girl in a wagon.

She rode out at the fifth section of the dawn drum.

The avenue west of Yongchong was pale grey and empty. The light had not yet committed itself. The shops along the great avenue had not opened their shutters; the avenue itself, which by mid-morning would be full of carts and water-sellers and Sogdian camel-trains, was a long swept length of beaten earth holding the small mist of the river. A water-seller passed her going east, his pole creaking, his eyes flat with the night he had not slept either. A Gold Bird patrol passed her going west — four men, the small lacquered crest on the leader's cap — and the leader looked at her, registered the grey, did not slow. A woman alone on horseback at this hour was just legal; a woman alone in Daoist grey was almost a credential. The captain raised two fingers in the salutation a junior censor would give to a clerk he was not sure of. She returned it with the bend of her head she used for officers of equivalent uncertainty.

She passed the corner where the back lane of her own ward met the avenue and did not look down it. She had registered, last night, the small dry sound of the man who had been waiting in her drain. The man had been gone before the fourth watch — she had listened to him go; he had walked east on the dirt of the back lane and then north on the dirt of the long alley behind Anyi Ward, in boots whose ribs she had read in the puddle. She did not yet know whose man he was. She would not turn her head to look for him. A woman who turned her head was a woman who knew she was being watched, and a woman who knew she was being watched was a woman whose head would, eventually, be a useful thing to know the price of.

The Drum Tower stood at the southwest corner of the imperial precinct, broad and squat and ordinary in the early light, and the drum on its summit had not yet sounded the second of its dawn calls. She rode past it. She did not look up. The drum-keeper, she had heard once at a Pingkang dinner, was bribable for a coin a beat. She did not yet know whether she would ever need to bribe a drum-keeper. She would.

Vermilion-Bird Avenue ran south through the centre of the city, a hundred and fifty paces wide where she crossed it, and even at this hour the width of it was a thing she felt as cold. There were three carters at its eastern verge waiting for the markets to open; one of them was eating a bing from a sleeve and watching her, not unkindly, the way a man watches any rider whose horse looks just slightly cleverer than its rider. She crossed the avenue at a walk. She turned west.

West of Vermilion-Bird the wards changed. The vermilion gates of the official quarters fell behind; the gates here were older and more various — some lacquered red, some unpainted, one or two painted the cobalt blue that the Sogdian merchants of Hexi favoured because cobalt was cheap in Khotan and they had brought a great deal of it with them when they came. The houses behind the gates were grander than Yongchong's and more compactly built. A Sogdian house in Chang'an, she had read in a customs filing once, was a single courtyard with two storeys around it, the upper floor for sleeping, the lower for trade, the gate strapped with iron because the household kept silver and frankincense in the cellars and not in a counting-house. She had filed the architecture. She had never been inside one.

At the gate of Liquan the sabao's deputy was waiting.

He was the man the runner had described. Half-Tujue, taller by a head than the sabao's ordinary men, his face a flat broad-cheeked Tang-frontier face above a Sogdian merchant's tunic — the tunic plain dark wool, the right sleeve embroidered at the cuff with the small repeating geometric mark of the An clan, the cuff worn shiny at the edge from a year or more of use. His knife sheath was where the runner had said it would be: under his coat, on the left, where a clan bodyguard's knife rode. He did not draw the knife. He bowed.

"Lady," he said, in good Tang. Then, in case she had doubts about his good Tang, in better Tang: "Lady, I am Aspand, of the deputy-house of the sabao of the Western Market. My master sends me to receive you."

"Aspand."

"Lady."

"Your master expects me before the noon drum."

"Before the dawn-drum's second, lady. My master has been at the gate since the fourth watch."

She filed fourth watch. The sabao's deputy had been at the gate for an hour. The sabao, if Aspand was telling the truth, had been at the gate for two. A sabao did not stand at his ward gate at the fourth watch. A sabao did not stand at any gate at any hour; he was a man whose entire dignity consisted of being inside a room. The sabao had been at the gate because the sabao had not wanted any other body to be there to be the one who saw her arrive. That was either a courtesy of unusual size or a precaution.

She had grown up registering precautions.

"Then I will not keep him."

The mare went through the gate behind Aspand at a walk. The street inside Liquan Ward — liquan meaning sweet spring, a name some Han clerk had given to the ward two centuries ago because of a well that had since gone bad and been bricked — narrowed almost immediately. The houses were close-built; the lower storeys leaned out over the street in the way that Sogdian wood-and-mud-brick favoured, so that the upper galleries almost met overhead and the morning sky above was a long narrow strip of grey. The smell of the ward came up to her in three layers: damp cellar leather first, then saffron from the open spice-stalls that would not open today but had left their walls perfumed; under both, a hot sharp animal smell which was, she thought, the camel-yard at the south of the ward, where the An clan kept their string of pack-camels in a wired pen against the south wall. The camels, knowing the hour, were already complaining. One of them, somewhere not far, was groaning in the long whistling complaint a camel made when it had been kept tied past its usual lying-down.

She felt the camel before she felt the rest of the ward, and she filed that, too. A household that had not let its camels lie down in twenty-eight hours was a household that had not done anything for twenty-eight hours.

Aspand led her west along the inner street and then south down the second turning. The third turning was a narrower lane, almost an alley, walled on both sides with the high blank walls of merchant compounds. At the end of the third turning was the third gate of Liquan — not the ward gate, that was the south one, but the third compound gate from the inner street, in local idiom the third gate. She had drawn it on her wax tablet last night. She did not need to look at her tablet. She had drawn it correctly.

The gate of the An compound was lacquered, but not red; it had been lacquered in the dark plum-brown that Sogdian Zoroastrians used for any door that touched a place of mourning, and the brown was old, several years old, the lacquer crazed at the corners in the small triangle pattern that meant the household had not had the gate redone since at least the elder An's death. A bronze lamp-bracket hung beside it. The lamp was out. The wick had been removed.

A Sogdian household, she remembered from one of her husband's circuit footnotes, kept a fire at the threshold lamp for so long as one member of the household was alive within. The wick had been removed. Someone, very recently, had told this gate that there was no one alive behind it to keep the fire for.

Aspand did not knock. He set his palm flat against the gate, three fingers spread, his thumb folded inward; he held the position for the count of perhaps four breaths; and the gate opened a hand's width from within, and a man's face — a Sogdian face, narrow-nosed, the eyes set deep and shadowed and red — looked out at her, registered her grey, and the gate swung inward.

She did not yet dismount. From the saddle she could see, through the open gate, the front court.

The front court of an An-clan compound was, by the customs records, a flagged rectangle of perhaps fifty by thirty paces, with the gate on its east face and the main hall on its west, the gallery on its north and the spice-warehouse on its south. Wanjun had drawn it correctly. The flagstones were dark with damp; spring dew had not yet burned off them, because no one had lit a brazier in the courtyard since yesterday. In the centre of the court, where the head of the house would have received a guest of importance, stood a tall painted screen.

The Bukharan screen.

It was, even at this hour and even from horseback, a beautiful object. Six panels, each perhaps the height of a man, painted on stretched silk and varnished and bound at the joints with worked brass. The painting was of a hunt — Sasanian style, men on slim horses pursuing antelopes through a stylised forest of pomegranate trees, the horses' tails knotted in the old way, the riders' headcloths streaming. Two thousand strings of cash. The youngest An wife had been said to use it to hang her wet linen.

There was no wet linen on it now. There was, instead, on the third panel from the left, a long dark smear shaped like the print of a wrist drawn slowly downward, and at the level of the painted antelope's neck a single round flake of brown — old brown, last-night brown — that the morning had not yet dried. Someone had touched the screen with a hand that had blood on it. They had touched it not to wipe the hand but to steady themselves.

She filed it.

She got down from the mare. She did so with the small inward dignity she always gathered when she got off a horse — bad with horses, she had said at six, and she had been right — and Aspand took the rein from her and gave it to a boy who came forward from a stall by the gate. The boy was Sogdian, perhaps twelve, his hair cut short in the Bukharan house-boy fashion, his eyes red as Aspand's. The boy did not look at her. The boy looked at the mare. He took the rein with hands that were shaking.

A house with that many shaking hands was not a house that had been quiet for twenty-eight hours by chance.

"The sabao," said Aspand.

The sabao stood inside the gate. He was a small spare man in his sixties, with a Sogdian merchant's grey-streaked beard combed forward over his collar and a Tang official's hat — the small ceremonial futou of a registered foreign-community headman — set straight on his head at an hour when no other sabao in the city would have his hat on. He had been wearing it, she thought, since dusk yesterday.

"Lady Cui," said the sabao. He bowed. His Tang was the careful Tang of a man who had passed the lay registry exam at fifty and had said nothing in his life in Tang that he had not first thought through in Sogdian. "I am Roshan, of the An. I receive you on behalf of my brother who is dead, and his sons who are dead, and the women of his house who are dead, and I beg of you the courtesy of your discretion within these walls."

"You have it," she said.

She bowed in return — the bow she used for a man of his rank, neither deeper nor shallower — and added, because the formula required it, "I come at the request of the Office of the Censorate, in the matter of religious rites for the unprepared dead, under license of the abbey of Lady Wei Wan, and I will conduct what I conduct under the eye of your household."

Roshan listened. He was a small man holding himself very straight. He had buried, she remembered with a small and quite unwelcome shock, two adult children in the smallpox of 745, and he had stood at the public funeral for them in this same plum-brown coat. She had read the sabao's annual roster from that year; the deaths had been recorded in it. He had not allowed his face, then or now, the indulgence of a private grief.

"My brother's hall," he said, "is at the end of the gallery. The dead are there. I have not permitted anything to be moved. I have permitted only the lamp at the gate to be put out, in the rite of our house, which is the rite of fire, and which you will not be asked to enter into. Lady Cui."

"Yes."

"The deputy of the censor is not here."

She registered that this was not a question. The sabao was, in his small careful way, informing her of something. The Censorate had not sent a deputy. The Censorate had not, in fact, formally heard of the deaths. Pei had sent her instead of the deputy because the deputy could not be sent yet, because the sabao had not yet officially reported and would not, the sabao had decided, officially report until a Daoist nun he had been told he could trust had stood inside the hall.

"Sabao," she said.

"Lady."

"Has the Office of the Western Market been informed."

"The Office," said Roshan, very levelly, "has been informed by my younger nephew, by hand of a runner, at the third hour of yesterday's afternoon. The Office sent a deputy to my gate at the fourth hour. The deputy" — and here his face did something that was not quite a smile and not at all a smile — "observed that he could not enter a Zoroastrian household at a moment of mourning without offence to the fire, and undertook to file the matter at the seventh hour of tomorrow, so that the clerks would not be detained from their dinners."

"He took a coin."

"Lady Cui."

"How heavy."

The old man met her eyes. He was, she realised, a man who would have liked, very much, to like her, and had not in this lifetime been able to afford the luxury.

"Three taels," he said.

She did not say anything. She filed the figure.

"It is not a large coin to keep an Office quiet," said the sabao, "but it is a coin large enough to tell me who paid it. I have not yet decided what I will do with that knowledge. I am — Lady Cui, I am old. I am informing you that the coin was three taels because the coin will become relevant to your work. It will not, today, become relevant to mine."

She bowed her head. The bow was not quite the bow of acknowledgement; it was the bow of receipt. He had given her a thing she would have to carry. He had told her that he knew who had bribed the Office, and that he would not act on the knowledge, and that she was not to expect him to. He had also told her, by the precision of three taels, that he had stood in the room while the deputy received the coin. A coin counted to the tael was a coin counted by a witness. The sabao had been present for his own bribe.

She would not, on his behalf, ask him why.

"Sabao."

"Lady."

"I will go in."

"My brother's son will accompany you."

He turned his head a quarter of a turn, and at the threshold of the gallery — she had not seen him there, which meant he had been standing very still — a man came forward into the light of the front court.

He was Sogdian, with the long-boned Persian narrowness of feature that the An clan had inherited from the mother's line, and he was perhaps twenty-eight, slim and tall and dressed in the unbleached white that the Sogdian Zoroastrians wore for mourning of a near kinsman. His hair was bound back from his face and he had not, last night, shaved. He had not slept. He had not, she thought, sat down. He held himself with the still patience of a man who had been waiting at a threshold for a long time, who had thought, perhaps, about what he would say when the threshold was crossed, and who had chosen — after considering several sentences — to say none of them.

His eyes were grey. She had not been expecting them to be grey. She had been expecting brown.

He came to within three paces of her and bowed. The bow was the bow of a younger man to a woman of equal rank, neither family nor stranger. He held it half a beat longer than a Tang man would have, which was Sogdian courtesy, and straightened.

"Lady Cui," he said.

"An gongzi."

"My uncle's house is grateful that you have come."

His Tang was excellent. It was excellent in the precise way the Tang of a foreign-born scholar was excellent: the syntax slightly too formal, the diction a half-degree too literary for the situation. He had been educated by a Han tutor, and the tutor had been a good one, and the tutor had not been from Chang'an — there was the faintest Hexi roundness in the gan. She filed his Tang. She filed the grey eyes. She filed the way he held his hands, loose at his sides, the right hand a fraction higher than the left, in the small unconscious way of a man who carried, daily, a sword and had today not carried one. The mourning white had no scabbard at the belt.

He looked at her, once, with the careful nothing the runner had described. The careful nothing was a face she knew from her father's outer hall: the face of a man who had decided not to be read and had not yet decided whether his decision had been the right one. He held the careful nothing for perhaps two breaths. Then it slipped, very slightly, at the left corner of the mouth — not a smile, nothing as gross as a smile, but the small involuntary acknowledgement of a man recognising that the woman he had heard about was indeed the woman in front of him, and that this was either a relief or a difficulty and he had not yet decided which.

"You are Lady Cui," he said.

"I am."

"My uncle wrote your husband's name in his ledger six months ago."

She had been about to walk past him, on Roshan's gesture, toward the gallery. She did not walk past him. She stopped.

"My husband," she said, "has been dead eighteen months."

"Yes."

"Your uncle wrote a dead man's name in his ledger."

"Yes."

"I see."

She did not, at that moment, see. She filed the sentence in the form he had given it. A Sogdian trade-house ledger was not a memorial book; one did not write a dead man's name in one. Either the elder An had been keeping a private accounting that used names ceremonially — which Sogdian trade-houses did not — or the elder An had not believed her husband was dead. The second possibility, considered for the length of one breath, was the kind of possibility she had trained herself to file and then to put behind a closed door in the orderly small room she kept for things she would not look at while she was working.

She put it behind the door. The door was iron.

"After," she said. "After the hall."

"After," he agreed.

He stepped back. He gestured, in the long-fingered way of a man who had been taught Han etiquette by a tutor who had been taught Sogdian etiquette by his mother, toward the gallery.

She walked. The flagstones rang slightly under her boots — the dryness of a courtyard in the second hour of dawn, the dampness eaten off by the wind from the western desert. The gallery was a roofed walkway, four paces wide, running the long axis of the compound from the front court to the main hall. The wooden beams overhead were painted in the alternating cinnabar and dark green of a Sogdian merchant household; the wall on her right, the gallery's south wall, was hung at intervals with small embroideries in the geometric style of Bukhara, each one perhaps the width of a hand, each one stitched in the bright crisp wool of Sogdian needlework and worn at the edges from being touched. She filed the embroideries. There were seven of them. A household embroidery was, in Sogdian custom, a small ancestral plaque commissioned at the birth of each living member of the house. There were seven hanging. One peg at the end of the gallery was empty.

A peg empty where seven hung was, she thought, either a plaque taken down for cleaning or a plaque taken down because the person commemorated had walked out of the house. She filed the empty peg.

At the end of the gallery the door to the main hall stood open. Two Sogdian house-women, both elderly, both in mourning white, stood at the threshold. They moved aside for her. They did not look at her. One was holding the other's hand.

She stepped over the threshold.

The hall ran the width of the compound, a long shallow room lit by the high small windows in its west wall. The windows had been opened to the dawn, because no fire could be kept in a hall of the dead until the rites had been said, and the morning had begun to come in pale across the floor. The floor was matted in the Sogdian way with woven reed mats, edged in dark red. At the centre of the room was a dining table — long, low, of the Sogdian pattern, with cushions instead of stools along its sides — and around the table were the dead.

She counted them.

Six.

She counted them again.

Six.

The runner had said the household. Pei had said the household. She had said seven. There were six.

She stood very still in the doorway and did not yet, this morning, choose what to feel about being one short. There were six bodies arranged at a dinner table at which six places had been laid. Six places. Not seven.

She had been wrong.

She filed I have been wrong in the small room she kept for it, which was not crowded.

An Naxia — Anaxa, the runner had called him, the Persian name; she had not yet earned the right to use it in her head — was at her shoulder. He had stepped into the hall behind her. He did not look at the table. He had, she thought, looked at the table enough.

"How many," she said.

"Six," said Anaxa.

"The household register lists seven."

"Yes."

"Who is missing."

"My aunt Datis," he said, "is in the apartments behind the fire-temple in Liquan. She did not eat at this table the night before last. She was at the fire-temple for the women's prayer."

"Datis is alive."

"Datis is alive."

"Then the dead are six and the missing is one — the servant girl. The girl your house kept in the kitchen."

He did not, for a moment, answer. She felt him decide to answer; she heard the very small intake of his breath as he chose.

"Yes," he said. "The girl is gone. Her name is Aroka."

She let his answer sit, beside her, in the small filed room. She would, later, take Aroka down and turn the name in the light. She did not, now. Now there were six bodies at a table and she had been wrong about one of them and she had thirty paces in which to be right about the others before her one chance to walk this room while no one had moved anything had ended.

She stepped forward.

She did not go to the table first. She went to the south window, opened against the morning, and stood with her back to the room and looked out at the small courtyard that the south window gave onto — the kitchen yard, narrow, walled, with a covered well in its centre and a single low door in its far wall that led, she remembered from the customs map, through to the spice-warehouse. The well was domed in the Sogdian way with a low brick cap and a wooden cover. The cover was on. There was, around the rim of the cap, a thin halo of damp moss. On the southern arc of the rim — the arc nearest the kitchen door — the moss was scraped. A clean curve, perhaps the length of her hand, of bared brick. It looked, in the early light, like a smile.

She filed the smile.

She turned. She walked around the table. She did not look at the faces yet.

The table was set in the Sogdian pattern, which she had read about and had never seen: a long rectangle, six places, three to a side, with the head-of-house's place at the east end where the rising sun would touch the bread first. The bread was on the table. The bread was a flat round Sogdian non loaf, broken into six pieces and laid one piece beside each place, as the custom required. The pieces were dry at the edges but still elastic in the middle. The bread had been broken at most thirty hours ago. The cellar coriander, in the small dish at the centre of the table, was green at the stem and brown only at the cut edge. A coriander cut thirty hours ago and kept in a covered hall was a coriander still green at the stem. She would, in a different room, have admired the freshness of the coriander.

The wine cups were six. Three on the south side of the table, three on the north. They were paired. Three of them were Sogdian — fluted brass, the rim chased with the small pomegranate pattern of a Bukharan workshop; three of them were Han — the white-glazed porcelain of the imperial kilns, the standard banquet cup of a wealthy Han household. Three and three. The Sogdian three were on the south side. The Han three were on the north side. The hosts had sat on the south. The guests had sat on the north.

There had been guests.

She filed the meal had been laid for guests. The runner had said the household. The runner had not said the household and the guests. She was now revising her arithmetic. Six places, three hosts, three guests. None of the guests were here. The hosts were all dead at the table.

She went on around the table.

She came to the head-of-house place at the east end. The elder An, the patriarch — Roshan's brother — lay where a man might lie if he had fallen forward off his cushion and been very gently lifted back upright into a seated arrangement against a pillar by someone who did not know how a Sogdian patriarch was supposed to sit. His head was tipped slightly to the right. His mouth was closed. His eyes were closed. His hands, both of them, were folded in his lap in the small careful way a mortician folded hands at a Buddhist laying-out. A Sogdian patriarch was not laid out Buddhist-style. A Sogdian patriarch's hands at death were not arranged at all by anyone but the naasalar — the body-washer of the household — and the naasalar did not work for thirty hours after the death, because the body was held to be defiled and the contamination must dissipate. The naasalar of this household had not yet entered the room. The hands had been folded by someone else.

She bent. She did not, this morning, in this hall, in front of An Naxia, touch the patriarch's hands. She looked. There was a faint pale crescent on the left thumbnail, the kind a bruise makes a day after the bruise is given, when the blood under the nail has begun to gather and to print. He had jammed his thumb. Recently. Within, she thought, the last two days.

She moved on.

The two sons of the patriarch sat — had been sat — at the second and third places along the south side. The elder of them, his face very pale, his mouth slightly open, was leaning a little toward the table. There was a small dark stain at the corner of his mouth — not blood, she thought; the dark of a thin liquid dried into the beard. She bent closer without touching. The smell was faint and faintly resinous. She thought of the bitter herbs she had read about in a customs filing on Hexi-route apothecary imports — gelsemium, the southern climbing vine, which in a sufficiently small dose produced a slow respiratory failure that resembled a peaceful sleep. Gelsemium would have been imported from Annam. The An clan, on the southern silk-and-spice manifests she had read in her husband's study, had not held a licence for it. Someone in this household had been drinking gelsemium. The dose, judging by the stain at the corner of the mouth and the faintness of the smell, had been not large. A man drinking that small a dose would have noticed.

He had not noticed. The wine had been carrying it.

She passed the younger son. She passed the first daughter-in-law, whose head was very gently inclined onto her own shoulder in the attitude of a woman asleep at the small hour of a long evening. She passed the second daughter-in-law and the nephew. She came to the west end of the table, where there was no chair and no body and no place — and where, on the matting itself, there was a faint indent: the rectangle of a cushion that had been there and was no longer.

A cushion had been removed.

She turned to An Naxia.

"There were seven places at this table," she said.

"There were six."

"There were seven. The cushion at the west end has been taken away."

He looked, for the first time, at the table. He looked at the rectangle of less-flattened reed where her hand was — she had not yet pointed, but he had seen what she had seen. He took half a step forward. He stopped.

"You are right," he said. "There were seven places."

"And six bodies."

"Yes."

"And the seventh place was at the foot of the table, opposite your uncle's head."

"Yes."

"In Sogdian table-grammar, the foot of the table is the guest-of-honour's seat."

He looked at her — a half-second longer than the look had needed to be. He said, very steadily: "Lady Cui knows our table-grammar."

"Lady Cui has read the customs filings of two hundred Sogdian households," she said, "and the sabao's annual roster, three years running, in her late husband's study."

He absorbed this. He did not, she saw, find it surprising. He had been told something about her, before this morning, that he had not yet decided whether to believe; he was now in the small inward process of upgrading the something.

"There was a guest," she said. "At the seat of honour."

"There was a guest."

"He has been removed from the table."

"He has been removed from the table."

"And he is the seventh person who is no longer in this house."

"Lady Cui."

"An gongzi."

He let a beat go. The hall was very quiet. The morning, outside the south window, had begun to be the proper colour of morning. Somewhere in the front court the camel groaned its complaint again. Somewhere closer — much closer — the old naasalar's low chant, which had begun without her noticing it, was setting up a slow figure of words in Sogdian that she did not know but that she filed, because she filed everything, against the day she would.

"The seventh man," said An Naxia, "is the guest my uncle had invited for the seventh hour of the night before last. The guest was, by my uncle's writing on the kitchen slate, a Han man of the Eastern Market. My uncle did not write his name. My uncle, in this household, did not usually write a guest's name on the slate when the guest was a man my uncle did not wish his womenfolk to ask about by name."

"And the kitchen slate."

"Is in the kitchen. It has not been wiped."

"Show me."

He bowed his head a quarter inch. He gestured at the south door of the hall, the door that led to the kitchen yard with the smiled well. She went. He followed her two paces behind, which was the courtesy of a man for a woman who was working.

At the door she stopped. She turned, in the doorway, and looked back at the room one more time, because she would not be in this room again with the bodies in their original arrangement. She fixed it. She walked it, in her mind, place by place: the patriarch with his folded hands, the elder son with the stain at the corner of his mouth, the younger son and his angle of lean, the two daughters-in-law and the nephew, the bread broken to six pieces, the coriander still green, the three brass cups and the three porcelain cups, the empty seventh place at the foot of the table where a cushion had been and was not. She fixed the dark smear on the third panel of the Bukharan screen in the front court. She fixed the empty peg at the end of the gallery. She fixed the sabao's figure of three taels. She fixed the wick missing from the threshold lamp. She fixed the camel that had not been allowed to lie down.

It took her, in the doorway, perhaps three seconds. An Naxia stood and waited. He had not, she thought, ever in his life seen a woman of his own generation do that with a room before, and he was making an effort not to look as though he were seeing it now.

"After you, lady," he said, very quietly, when she was done.

She went out into the kitchen yard. The well smiled at her, still, in the bared brick at the southern arc of its rim. She did not, this morning, go to it. The well would wait. The kitchen door was three paces from her right hand, and on the slate inside that door, the elder An had written, the night before last, in a hand she had not yet seen, a single line about a Han man of the Eastern Market whose name he had not chosen to record.

She crossed the yard. She did not look up at the high windows of the gallery, where she felt, without turning her head, the small movement of a woman — Datis, perhaps, who was alive — watching her from above. She filed the small movement. She would name it later.

A house with the doors closed too long becomes a tomb, she thought.

The kitchen door was not closed. It was ajar. The slate was where An Naxia had said it would be: hung on the inside of the door, by a leather thong, the chalk on its hook beside it. The slate had Sogdian on one side and Tang on the other. The Tang side was up.

The line on the slate was eight characters.

She read it. She read it twice.

She put her hand against the door-jamb and steadied herself, for the small flat half-second she allowed herself, in the manner of a woman who had been given, before her work had properly begun, the first of the day's small flat private blows. Then she filed the line. She read it a third time, for the fixing. She did not yet — not in this kitchen, not in front of An Naxia, not in this hour of this morning — let her face do anything about it.

The eight characters were: 东市张氏, 七刻, 茶罢留饭. Zhang of the Eastern Market, seventh hour, tea after which he stays for the meal.

A Han silk-merchant of the Eastern Market. Zhang. The clan name was one character; it was the name of a clan with two thousand households in Chang'an alone, and a great many of those households kept shops in the Eastern Market, and her husband, eighteen months dead, had written, on a slip of paper she had not yet read in the lacquered box on her desk, a list of names of which one was Zhang.

She turned the slate over. The Sogdian side bore three lines in a hand she could not read.

"An gongzi."

"Lady."

"Can you read this."

He looked. His face did not, for the briefest possible instant, do nothing. Then it did. It did, very carefully, nothing.

"Yes," he said.

"Read it."

He read it. He read it aloud in Sogdian first, because — she thought — he was buying himself the half-second of translation, and then in Tang, because she had asked him to.

"It says," he said, "if the Han pig comes again uninvited, I will set the dog on him and answer the magistrate later. It is in my uncle's hand. It is dated, by the small mark at the head of the line, to the morning of the day before yesterday. The Han pig is" — he paused; he chose — "a man my uncle did not like."

"A Han man of the Eastern Market."

"A Han man of the Eastern Market."

"Who came to dinner the night the dog was not set on him."

"Lady Cui."

"Yes," she said. "I see."

She did, this time, see. She filed the Han pig. She filed the patriarch's writing on the morning of the day before the dinner — he had threatened to set the dog on the guest he had then sat down to eat with. A man writing such a line in the morning and entertaining the man at the seventh hour of the same evening was a man who had been compelled, between the morning slate and the evening table, to be civil to a person he had told his own kitchen he would not be civil to. Compelled by what, she did not yet know. Bound to power, the sabao's deputy might have said — the phrase she had not yet heard but would, before the noon drum, hear from the sabao's own mouth.

She gave the slate back to An Naxia. He hung it on its thong. He did not, she noticed, put it back exactly square on the hook; he hung it so that the Tang side faced the wall.

"An gongzi."

"Lady."

"I will need to see the cellars, the spice-warehouse, the kitchen storeroom, the well, the room in which your aunt Datis slept the night before last, and the gate-boy. Not yet. First I will sit for the count of one hundred in the front court and write three lines on a slate of my own."

"Yes."

"After that you will tell me," she said, very calmly, looking at him for the first time at his own eye-level and without the courtesy of distance, "what your uncle was being asked to do for the Han pig of the Eastern Market, and why he had decided to do it after he had decided not to. I do not ask you to tell me everything. I ask you to tell me what your uncle was being asked to do. I will know if you tell me a lie. I will not be insulted by the lie. I will be inconvenienced by it. We have, between us, the time between now and the noon drum to be useful to each other. After the noon drum we will be useful to other people."

He looked at her. The careful nothing was gone from his face. In its place there was, for the first time, a look she could read. The look was not surprise. The look was the small inward acknowledgement of a man who had been told something he had been told before and had heard, this time, in a voice he had not been expecting.

"Lady Cui," he said, "I will tell you the part I am permitted to tell you. The rest I will tell you when I am permitted."

"By whom."

"By myself."

She filed by myself. She filed his grey eyes. She filed the way he stood, in his mourning white, beside the kitchen door, with his right hand a fraction higher than his left in the unconscious habit of the swordless man.

"That will do," she said, "for now."

She walked back across the kitchen yard. The well, behind her, smiled. The camel, in the front court, groaned. The morning, somewhere above the high blank walls of the An compound, completed itself into the proper colour of a Chang'an spring morning at the second hour of dawn. Somewhere in the centre of the city the second of the dawn drums sounded for the second time, and was answered, faintly and a long way off, by the bell tower in the eastern wards.

A house with the doors closed too long becomes a tomb, she thought.

The doors of this house had been closed too long. She would, now, open them.
