第三章 ——《数至一百》

她坐在前院廊壁下的低矮柏木长凳上,右手边是那扇不花剌屏风,膝上摊着小小一方蜡板,默默数至一百。她做此事,盖因父亲在她十一岁那年教过:身处生地,最初一百息,便是一名谨慎的见证人向自己的留心所纳之税;不肯纳此税者,日后往往要以未曾筹算的钱币,被人留心。她以袖中双手的缓启缓阖来计数,于这一百之内,不容自己思虑。

她容自己——记录。

足下铺的是凿琢的青石板,乃老安公子娶继室的那一年所砌。近门一块石的角上,以小小粟特数字刻着年款;她读过那份记载阖府扩院的关市呈文。石板新近被一只细心的手扫过。那细心的手漏了一处:在不花剌屏风第三扇之下、那道褐色血痕正下方的石板上,有一抔铜钱大小的浅淡尘粉,是新扫帚才会落下的那种。这尘粉是被推到那里的。昨日午后那只血手抚过屏风时,石板上并无尘粉,因那血手未曾滴血于石。尘粉较血痕年轻。年轻了一次扫帚之程。

她将这尘粉,存档。

廊下梁柱,朱漆与深绿相间,靠前院一段近处,沾着一层炉烟之色——那炉子自前日清晨起便不曾再燃。粟特人家自冬末至春末,廊檐下必置一炭炉;安家停燃炭炉,正是家主在厨房石板上写下「汉狗」二字那一日,或那日之晨。她尚不能再加精确。她会。

门首的灯,灯芯已被拔去。铜托空着。铜托上,挂灯之处的铜色与未挂灯之处的铜色不同——日复一日的灯油烟气,已将挂灯处的铜熏出一圈淡淡哑光晕。这哑光晕,她想,恰是那不见之灯芯的大小与形状。

廊下那七幅绣像——六幅纪念在世家人,一幅为已离家者——按制作先后悬于南壁。空着的挂钩在最西头。离正堂最近的一端。一位向正堂方向走出去的家人。她将「向堂而去」存档。

一名身着素棉的粟特小婢——大约十四岁,她想,并非家中女眷,只是厨下使唤的丫头——从廊下走出,双手捧着一个有盖陶盆,自前院横穿至门前。她未曾望向婉君。她将陶盆置于门内一侧。她转身回去。陶盆在她过婉君身侧时,那气味——是洗尸之水。这水洗过的是一具尸身。这具尸身的洗濯,须用盐。盐,她记起亡夫三年前一个冬夜在小宴上递过来的关于粟特仪轨的一条小注——粟特教将盐倾入洗尸之水,以驱逐那纳屑教所谓附在洗尸人身上的小小尸魔。这位厨下小婢,违俗、违龄、亦违其本份,被人按入了为死者治殓之列,至少其中一具。

她将这小婢,存档。她会在午前与她说话。

数至七十二——她于袖中以右手缓启、左手缓阖来计——她听见廊下传来安那夏的轻步。他在南廊柱内三步处停下,立于阴影中,除非她回首,否则不在她视野之内。他已在那里立着、看她数息有二十八息之久。他立而不动。他立着的姿态,她想,恰如她幼时蒙父亲允可在外堂后聆听供词时,父亲所立的那种姿态:那是一位男子,他出于自己的某种缘故,已决意——此屋之中的女子,便是此刻这屋子的主人。

她未曾回首。

她数足一百。

她抽出袖中蜡笔,以她惯用于日落前要拭去的那种小而经济的字,写下三行:

一:席为七人,非六。第七位在席尾。第七位是汉客之位。汉客姓张。

二:一只染血之手,曾抚不花剌屏风第三扇。其下石板,事后被扫过。扫者非血者。

三:门首之灯,其芯已拔,乃彻底绝户之礼。妲娣斯尚在。此户未绝。拔芯者,是一位尚不愿此户复振之人。

她将蜡板在膝上停了片刻。她将这三行读了一遍。其后整个上午,她未将之拭去。

她将蜡板纳回袖中,起身。

「安公子。」

他自阴影中走出。他已解去拂晓时束发的小绳,绳在右手中。鬓发垂在两颊。她到这位伯父的院子已四个时辰,他始终未坐。

「娘子。」

「那位汉客。告诉我,令伯父被托去做什么。」

这一次,他未再权衡。在厨房院落到廊下的那一段路上,他已决意。

「家伯,」他说,「被托代收数批未琢之于阗玉石入安家货栈,存放一两个市日,然后不入家中关市账簿,转交予春季商队的一名吐蕃使者。」

她存档。她将「未琢之于阗」存档。将「不入账」存档。将「吐蕃使者」存档。

「付价为何。」

「白银。河西路银,铸成锭,按舍弟年幼者的禀报——尚未亲验——上有边军印记。」

「几批。」

「过去九月之内,三批。第四批本应在今春。家伯在压力之下应承了前三批,那压力,容某另在一室向娘子陈述。第四批他已拒。第四批,便是前日夜里那只『汉狗』来此的目的。」

「何种压力。」

「头一批,」安那夏道,「随附一函,函中点出舍妹安碧碧的归宿。舍妹嫁入了一人之家,此人姓名,在此地、此刻,某不便出口。那函是一种礼数。家伯领会了那礼数。他收了头一批。第二批,无函。第三批,无函,附一张道谢之笺。第四批本应再附一函,点出我家中另一位女眷。家伯在写下『汉狗』二字的那一日清晨,已决意——第四批不收,他要修书给舍兄,给萨保,给御史台,按此次序;并要在昨日午鼓之前办妥。」

她听着。她任那句话落定,任其后的静默沉淀成那种形态——她这位证人在自己内心某间小屋里,足足花了三个时辰,才决意把它告诉她。

「昨日午鼓。」

「家伯前日夜里第二更便已亡故。」

「『汉狗』入席后三个时辰。」

「然。」

「是公子发现的。」

「非某发现。是萨保的副手发现的。某被传,方至。」

「何时辰。」

「午后第三刻。」

「石板未被拭去。」

「石板未被拭去。」

「因——」

他望着她。他——她看得分明——一直在等她问这一句,且尚未决定是否要答。

「因,」他道,「萨保的副手——某的从兄阿斯潘,他比某先入此院——在席前发现家伯之尸,便先于他人入厨房,读了那石板,决意不拭,决意不示之于萨保之衙吏,决意只示之于某。某在第三刻至。他示我以板。我二人共议:板不拭,板转面向壁;若有汉吏先于可信之人入此正堂,所见者乃一面背壁之板。今晨娘子未至之前,我们将板翻过来了。」

「萨保。」

「萨保在昨日上午第十一刻方至。萨保已斡旋西市署,使其在明日第七刻之前对此事漠然。萨保,娘子——他自掏腰包,以三两银子换得这份漠然,将来再向已无家主之家讨回。他——某不以家侄之口说此话,娘子;某以一名旁观者之口说——萨保正是以一种古风的粟特族长之姿,处理此事。」

「他未曾呈报御史台。」

「他遣人请娘子。经裴中丞之手,以独白之礼。他未曾呈报御史台。」

「他不信御史台。」

「崔娘子,凡一户粟特之家,地窖中藏有三锭边军之银、春季商队又有一批于阗玉石下落不明者,无一会信御史台。萨保所信的,是一位道观度牒的女冠,那观主乃岷王生母之异母姊妹;十五年前,这位女冠曾以一身灰衣,立于安氏萨保庙中,亲手接过家兄第一位夫人的骨灰。萨保遣人请的是魏婉夫人。魏婉夫人遣人请的是娘子。」

她未曾料到这一节。她将「魏婉夫人遣人请的是娘子」存档。这传召之链,先过了她的师长之手,又过了裴中丞之手,才到她身上;而裴中丞向她转述独白时,并未提及魏婉夫人。这独白,是裴中丞的一种礼数:他不愿她以为自己是受师恩之托而至,而非凭自己的度牒。这独白,亦是裴中丞的一种自慎:他要在万一案件出错之时,自己只是一名遣使之人,而非动子之人。她将这份自慎存档。日后,她会将那份礼数也一并存档。

「安公子。」

「娘子。」

「公子所言为真。」

「某所告知者,为真。」

「公子未告知之处。」

「关乎舍妹。」

「我不问令妹之事。」

「多谢。」

「未必。」

他微微低首一度,那是受人以恰当的唐礼相告——「此时不问,他日再问」——之时的小小致意。他,她看出,有一种在两种语义中长大的句法。她所言与她所未明言之意,他可同时听见。这或是他蒙师之教,或是他生活之习。无论何者,她皆存档。

「春季商队的吐蕃使者。」

「尚未来。第四批本是要约。吐蕃使者本应在十日后至。」

「公子要在场。」

「娘子?」

「十日后,公子要在贵府孝服在身,于门首迎那吐蕃人,那批已不存在的货色。公子要以礼相待。要告诉他,令伯父已故。要极仔细地,记下他的面容、姓名、衣着、随从,以及离去时所循之路。要在他离去之前,以礼相拒,不交付那批货。不告诉他何以如此。不告诉他公子曾与某说话。不告诉他此事已结。要请他二十日后再来。」

他听着。

「娘子,」他道,「是要某设饵。」

「我是要公子点他。」

「二十日后他归来,便正在本案第二鼓周之内。」

「二十日后他归来时,本案在公牍上已结,告破之名归于一支摩尼俗教密会的被捕。公子那时便说,那批货在乱中失落。他会信。他不会信得太久。他会第三次再来。第三次他会带一个我们想见之人来。」

「崔娘子。」

「安公子。」

「娘子是在九日之前,便已开始构筑娘子的案子。」

「我是在尚未握有案子之前,便已构筑它。这是某随先父所学之习。他说,唯有如此,案子来时,手中才有合用之篮。」

他又一次望着她。她尚不确知他所见为何。她将这一望存档。

「十日后,某在门首,」他道,「某会点他。」

「好。」

她未再多言,行至不花剌屏风第三扇前。

这次她未坐。她立于约三尺之距,望那幅画。屏风所绘之猎,按萨珊故法,乃是借喻王者之德;羚羊乃灵魂之猎物,骑者乃君王之欲。她曾在亡夫书斋中一处密格里,读过一部译成汉文的波斯图像论。她未看图像。她看那道血痕。

血痕,正如她在马背上所识:是一道缓缓下行的腕背之痕。近看分明:上半为细长一道下行之擦痕,乃手腕背贴着竖面拖下的印迹;下半,痕末处有一小小圆斑——一滴血,自较高处落下,原是手腕一停所留,干在擦痕之下缘。这血滴,已老至呈褐色,却尚嫩至边缘犹存月晕:它干涸的时辰,她想,约在前夜亥时至昨晨丑时之间。约莫六个时辰,略有出入。

她取出蜡板,以两笔画下那擦痕与血滴。

擦痕在她肩高之处。绘此屏者,当时是不花剌宫廷之匠,姓名嵌在屏风西头铜牌上——奥尔达希尔,霍尔密兹德之子,于波斯历某年——折合天宝三载。六十五寸:她以幼时随父亲在门框与棺椁之侧练就的眼力来量。抚此屏面的那只腕子,乃一名身高比寻常粟特男子矮两指宽的男子之腕。要么,便是一名高个子女子之腕。

此户之中,无论何种寻常时辰,皆不会有女眷将染血之腕倚靠在不花剌屏风第三扇——那是安家最年幼的少妇晾绢用的那扇。此户之女眷,纵在垂死之际,亦会令肩头远离屏风所绘之绢。此屏,是此户上下与之身体保持距离之物。她将此户的体面存档。那腕,是男子之腕。

身高比粟特男子寻常矮两指宽者,在长安,几必为汉人。她不需「几必」。她要的,是在明夜前可誊抄到绢上的蜡板,要的是一桩推论的形状。她在擦痕小图旁,写下「汉男」。她未写「张」。

她绕到屏风之后。

屏风之后乃未画的褐绢,张于髹漆之木。木净。绢净。第三扇背面所髹之漆,恰在她腰之高度,有一抹细微的擦痕,是男子腰带之扣紧贴屏后时所留——一道短短一拇指长的横向刮痕,在深漆中露出生白。

那位腕上有血之人,前夜曾在此屏之后,立过一阵。

他曾背贴屏风而立——扣带这一侧——面朝前院的廊下一面。他立得久至令带扣磨上漆面,却不久至磨痕深过一拇指之长。约莫一炷香。或更短。其后他绕到屏前——绕至画面这一面——晕眩或失血或兼而有之,以腕背支住屏风第三扇,腕在出血,一滴落下,他再前行。

他朝哪个方向行去。

她回至屏前。她审视血痕的角度。擦痕是直的,单凭擦痕看不出方向。但那血滴是径直自腕滴下;血滴的小小边缘——月晕凝固之处——朝着腕子其后挪动的方向,有极极细微的拉长。这拉长,她想,正是朝门首方向。

他朝门首行去。他在出血。他在以另一只手——她想,但尚不写下——携着一件小物:屏风之上,再无第二道擦痕、再无第二个血印;一名两腕皆出血的人,会双手撑壁、两腕齐滴。他只用了一只。另一只手,是在携物。

她在「汉男」之旁,又写「携一物出」。

她转身。立于屏风与廊下之间,按那男子在头晕一刹那将欲启步时的视野,环视前院。门正对廊下南柱。门距其立处约十五步。守门小厮在那男子流血的夜半时辰本不当在。门首之灯当时是亮着的。家宅上下,在席散两个时辰之后,按她对「钩吻」剂量的推算,正处于缓慢倾颓的初期呼吸阶段:尚未死,已不能动,倚在自己的褥垫之上,沉入那毒药造就的虚眠。不花剌屏风,正好横在席上垂死之人与门首流血之人之间。

那屏风,是他藏身之物。

她将屏风作为藏身之处存档。

「安公子。」

「娘子。」

「最年幼的安家少妇,前夜可是在廊下北厢之上的房中过夜。」

「然。」

「在那画屏正上方。」

「然。」

「她何时下来用饭。」

「她未下来。她身子不适。她在房中用过了饭。昨日午后第三刻,萨保副手入院之时,她在我们上方的第二扇窗前。」

「她一整夜都在窗前。」

「她——崔娘子。」

「一整夜。」

他望着她。这一望,已不是先前那种谨慎的虚空,也不是他心中对她的小小高估,亦非「他听见她比他被训练得能听见一名女子思虑的速度更快地思虑」时的致意。这一望——她仔细存档,因这至关紧要——是一名正要说谎却临时决意不说谎之人的,那种细微的内心确认。

「家伯最年幼的夫人,那一夜的某一段时辰是在窗前的,」他道。「某不知是哪一段。萨保副手至时,她已睡着。她此刻亦睡着,是她自愿,在祆教火祠之后的厢房内,昨日午后第四刻由从兄阿斯潘送去那里,时萨保尚未至。她睡了一日。她在昏黄时分醒。她不会说她见过什么。」

「不与公子说。」

「不与任何人说。不与某说。不与萨保说。不与妲娣斯姑母说。」

「与我说。」

他细细想了一下。他未即刻作答。她看着他想。她大体上并不惯于让证人去想;先父教过她,让证人去想,便是让证人去说谎。但她让安那夏去想。她让他去想,因她已在厨房院落与屏风之间决意:他不是证人;他是中间人。

「与娘子说,」他道,「或许。若娘子穿着灰衣,与她同坐于她姑母的厢房内,让祆教火祠之墙将娘子与全城隔开。她不愿与男子言。她或可与女子言。她或可与一位道家女冠言——若这位女冠正是她已故公公在半年前的账册里写到过的那一位。某来安排。」

她略一点头。

「那么,」她道,「今日午后,我便在祆教火祠之后的厢房见她。」

「今日午后。」他应。

她朝廊壁下的长凳走回。她未坐。早晨已过了第二鼓周,时辰渐稠。墙外远处,城在苏醒的种种小忙乱声响,已渐渐显出来。东边某处有人在叫卖一桶咸鱼。一名妇人在斥责小儿。一头骆驼——也许是同一头——又呜咽了一声,比方才短,仿佛是试一试风。院内甚静。那厨下小婢又一次抱着有盖陶盆横过前院;她依然未望向婉君,但这次未望的形态,与第一次已有别。两次穿院之间,已有人告诉过她,婉君是谁。

婉君在廊角停住。她转身。

「安公子,」她道。「我会受酬。」

「然。」

「于阗玉一块,已琢之品级,由萨保暂为托管,待案结再付。宗教掩护之下查案的标准酬金。」

「然。」

「还有。」

「娘子。」

「今日午后我见妲娣斯姑母。最年幼的安家少妇若肯,亦在午后见。厨下那小婢,此刻便见。萨保本人,今晨我离此院之前便见。明日午鼓我再到此宅,由慧济陪同,巡看厨房库房、香料栈房与水井;公子要备一名粟特通译,万一厨下小婢不肯说唐言。萨保副手要拒西市署入院,直至我巡过两遍。我未巡两遍之前,公子不可移正堂之尸。明日尸已冷;这于我之目的可矣;公子勿须——公子大可放心——将尸保暖。正堂上锁。钥匙由萨保、阿斯潘与公子三人执。不在我手。钥匙暂时不是我的麻烦。」

他听着。她停了一停。又添了一句,用她那种小小的、干燥的嗓音——她要说一件她尚未确知自己被允许说的事时,便用这种嗓音:

「还有,门首那盏灯。今夜把灯芯换回去。」

他望着她。

「崔娘子。」

「家中尚有一位女眷在世,门首仍燃此灯,并非对公子之神撒谎。这是告诉此户之敌人,此户毕竟未绝。这是告诉此户之敌人,我们已察觉他的礼数。他拔了灯芯。我们将把它放回。」

「妲娣斯尚在。」

「妲娣斯尚在。今夜入夜便将灯火放回,为了妲娣斯。火须自萨保庙的火把上引来,不许自此宅之火把引。要当着厨下小婢之面行此事。」

他久久未语。他右手的那个无意识的小小习惯——比左手抬高一分,正是失却的佩剑带那一处——在身侧一开一阖,做了一下。

「是,」他道。「崔娘子。」

她横过前院。她经过那扇修复了体面的屏风。她经过那盏失了灯芯的门首之灯。她至门首,门首处萨保罗珊正等着她——他或听见了她的声音,或决意她出来时自己不当在他处;她尚不能确定是哪一种——他立着,老头上戴着的礼幞头甚正,双手拢在袖中。

「萨保。」

「娘子。」

「请与我同行至街角。」

他一揖。他转身。他于她前——长辈之于晚辈的礼数——三步先行,出了那道小小私门,二人同立于巷与礼泉坊内街相接的街角。内街已渐成街景。一名卖水的,于二十步外放下扁担,正以本行的耐心,将水勺一勺一勺倒进每隔五门便有人放在门外候他的庭中陶瓮里。卖水的未看他们。卖水的已经看安家门首看了两日。今日他不会因看而得酬。

「萨保。」

「崔娘子。」

「萨保说三两。」

「三两。」

「西市署的副手,乃过去十四个月之内,受过安家门首之赠的两名衙吏之一。另一人,某想,是名唤曹的少卿录事。曹于冬日因一桩货单更正之事收过半两;副手收了三两。副手是主官。副手只有一个主家。」

老者侧目看了她一眼。

「娘子读过我们的关市呈文。」

「我读过贵处的关市呈文,亦读过西市署近三年的税册,并御史台同期的轮值名簿——读这些时,先夫尚在。副手昨日是被一名汉商之家仆所贿。家仆之主,正是与令兄前夜同席之人。家仆之主之所以贿之,并非因其名上了石板——他尚不知自家之名已上了石板——而是因三两银,乃他向西市署惯付之价,以保自家之名不上每日的盘问名单。这价,他已按市日付了,依某估算,一年又半年。」

「崔娘子。」

「萨保知此。」

「萨保疑此。」

「萨保至今晨之前,未曾决意对此有所作为。」

「崔娘子。」

「萨保。」

「某,」老者极轻地说,「在此城活了五十七年。其末二十年,某任此世界所造最大之城里第二等的外侨群体中、第二等的商号的萨保。某不是一个把这一生都用来不知者。某是一个把这一生都用来斟酌——在哪些细而准的时辰里,要当着另一个人之耳,承认他所知之事——之人。今晨,当着娘子之耳,便是这些时辰之一。其后这种时辰已不会很多。某,正如某在门首所告之者,老了。」

她望着他。他是个矮小、腰板挺直的老者,灰胡子,旧而直的腰背。他在七四五年的天花里葬过他这群人中的十二人,葬过他自己婚生的两个孩儿,皆在同一年。他在他兄长亡故的这个早晨,正以一种老而审慎的恒常通货,进行一桩交易。她,在她为此类通货所设的那间私室里,未曾因他的审慎而轻看他。

「萨保。」

「娘子。」

「某需萨保给某三个名。西市署的副手。少卿录事曹。以及那位东市汉商——其家仆于过去十八个月之内,按市日给贵署付价,以求贵署对他视而不见。」

「娘子已知第三人之名。」

「某知其家。」

「第三人之名,」萨保以平稳的唐言道——一名在他这个年纪、按他自己的规矩、决意此刻情愿承担「曾说出口」之累的人的那种唐言——「是张琮。东市北门第二条西巷里有一家绸缎铺。铺中一间小小私库,须由一架移开的织机底下进入。街与他案首之间隔着七重门。八日之前,他请了一名河南来的散工重髹了铺面的漆,散工之名某午前送与娘子。此事中他付西市署副手三两;十一日前另一桩事,他付副手五两。前一桩事,某想——某说不定;某要先告知娘子某说不定——是一桩安排:让一名出自某粟特之家的厨下小婢,在灞上的柳林中『便利地走失』。这小婢尚未走失。在娘子之玉酬付之前她会否走失,娘子,是某尚无以作答之问。」

她存档。她将一切存档。将张琮、绸缎铺、移开的织机、七重门、八日前重髹之漆、河南来的散工、三两与五两、灞上柳林中尚未走失的厨下小婢,皆存档。她将萨保那份细而准的小小勇气存档。她将他的面容存档。在同一间私室之内,她又将那扇门存档——半个时辰前,她在厨房之中所关上的那扇门,门后是石板上的八个字。萨保的这句话之后,那间私室,比一个时辰前拥挤多了。

她一揖。

「萨保,」她道。「明日午鼓,某偕慧济回此处。某需萨保在午鼓之前,办妥两件事。其一:今晚入夜,门首之灯由贵处火祠之火把点亮。其二:在某再立于此门之前,无论何人、何女、何童、何吏、何御史台之副、何西市署之副,皆不得以任何理由,由任何人放入此院。」

「然。」

「某再说一遍,因某要萨保不必再去想它。无一人。阿斯潘亦不可。萨保夫人亦不可。萨保之妹亦不可。火祠之祭司亦不可。无一人。阿斯潘与火祠之祭司可立于门首。不可入内。亡者尚不当由萨保来哀。亡者,由某来读。」

他以她十八月以来未曾被人以之相望的那种神情望着她。

「崔娘子,」他道。「某为娘子守此堂。」

她未让自己在礼泉坊外的巷中,被萨保这句话所动。她将之存档。她又一揖。她转身。她走回门首。她未看屏风、未看那只空挂钩、未看门首那盏灯、未看安那夏——那位仍立于前院、见她出门时让到一边、以一种正与京兆尹擦肩之时让路的礼数让到一边的安公子。

牝马由小厮牵在门首。小厮替她踩镫。她正了身姿。

「安公子。」

「娘子。」

「今日午后。」

「今日午后。」

「火祠之后的厢房。」

「火祠之后的厢房。」

「请安公子在某至之前,让妲娣斯姑母决定她是否要见某。某宁愿不去惊动一位正在丁忧之中的老妇人。」

「然。」

「还有。」

「娘子。」

「某不会在此宅之门口,于守门小厮听得见之处,问公子令妹安碧碧是否安好。但某会期望,今日午后于火祠之后的厢房中,公子自行告诉某——某日后何以终须知晓令妹安碧碧之名。」

他低首。他未应承。他亦未推拒。他低首低了那八分之一寸,那是一名兼受粟特母与汉师之教的男子的唐言之中「某听见了,某会去想」的意思。她将这一低首存档。她拉转牝马。马在她手下,行入巷中。

阿斯潘随马至坊门,未语。亦无须语。至坊门,他让到一旁,她单骑出门,行入正渐渐重新成为街景的礼泉坊内街。卖水的已走远;两门外有一名卖面的支起了一只小小炭炉与一口蒸腾的水锅;东边某处,那一长列粟特酒肆所在的香料行,有一扇窗板正为这一日开启。早晨已在她四下成了世界最大之城西隅的一个寻常春晨。她骑行其中。她朝东骑行其中,往永崇坊去。她以一名并不赶时辰的女子缓步而行。

她在朱雀大街与坊街相交的街角,想她永崇坊书案上那只髹漆的书函匣,想亡夫尚未给她看过的那一份名单,想石板上那八个字,想长安城内仅两千户的汉之某姓,其中——可能其中——一户,今日已得着了一张面容、一爿铺面与一面重髹的漆。

今晨她未取道平康坊回宅。葡萄娘子此时尚在睡。她当在傍晚去见葡萄娘子。到傍晚时,她当知道该问什么。

她于上午第三刻经过鼓楼。鼓未鸣。鼓正歇着,待午鼓的初响。司鼓者坐在楼脚他的小小木亭中,无表情地望着她过去。他长着一张细长的脸,今晨之前,她未留心过。今晨她留了心。她将他的面容存档。她继续前行。

至永崇坊门时,周嬷嬷已在厨房门内候着,守门小厮已将门栓抬起一半,未待她进入视野;门内一名小小黑影——非昨夜那名跑差,乃一名年长者,穿裴中丞跑差所着的暗灰色衣,袖口缀着旧式徽记——双手拢在袖中候着。

她骑入。门栓落下。跑差一揖。

「我家大人正在出声观望,娘子。」

「在此时辰。」

「在此时辰。」

「那么进来,」她道。

她下马。她让小厮牵走牝马。她穿着灰衣,从跑差身侧过去,横过院子,至她写字间。她跨过门槛之际,将那细而准的事实存档:裴中丞在她返家之前,便已遣了第二名跑差;按独白的常规章法,她尚未给他任何缘故来遣此人。裴中丞遣此第二人,乃因自破晓至上午第三刻之间,城中发生了一桩事,裴中丞要在她对安家之事尚未想毕之前,先令她知晓。裴中丞不是一个会打断人思虑之人。裴中丞是一个一旦打断他人思虑、便因下一念已成承重之念而打断的人。

她在书案前坐下。她未启袖。她尚未取出袖中那张画着屏风血痕的蜡板。

「请说,」她道。「独白吧。」

那位年长跑差清了清嗓子。他约莫四十,灰色短须,蓄着裴中丞门下十五年使役练就的细致而短整的唐式发式。

「我家大人观望,」他道,「西市署主簿,于今晨第一刻,在安家之事上,遣一名少卿录事去东市北门第二条西巷的一家漆铺,铺主姓张名琮。我家大人观望,少卿录事被见入此漆铺,于第二刻出,袖中携一封缄柬。我家大人观望,柬上小小封蜡之印,正是汉绢商行会的徽记。我家大人观望,此徽记按行会古例,仅用于行会内部之函。我家大人观望,一封行会内部之函,在西市署中封缄、由少卿录事携走,乃是一封在递送途中、被洗濯了一番、由原本之物洗成此时所呈之物的函。我家大人观望,此函——我家大人已极轻地查过——乃以盖封之套,单衔指名送至御史台某位老成御史。我家大人观望——」此处跑差以裴中丞惯有的方式一停——「单衔之上,所指名者,乃御史卢仲明。」

她极静地坐着。

「他在铺路,」她出声道,对着那名跑差。跑差所领的差事并不包括回应一句独白,他只将目光垂在地上。

她在心里那种「一旦动了情便会陷入的细小而炽静」之中想着。张琮,在她于礼泉坊下马至她回到永崇坊之间的三个时辰之内,已经通过一名于明日第七刻便会被「绑定」于这条渠道之诚信的少卿录事,向御史台开辟了一条私通之路。他在向渠道御史台一端那名人——卢仲明,亡夫的程序对头——做铺垫,让他来接收一种合卢仲明意的安家死案之版本。他已开始洗濯。他开始洗濯之时,尚不知她已在上午第二鼓时立于安家前院;尚不知萨保会在今夜入夜时、当着厨下小婢之面将门首之灯芯放回;尚不知——以她之数——廊下绣像有七而非六,席位有七而非六,他已以带扣磨过一扇不花剌屏风后的漆面,又以一只带血之腕磨过屏风之前。

明日他便会知。

她约有十八个时辰。

她取出蜡板,将那「数至一百」的三行拭去,原处写下四行:

一:张琮,东市绸商,北门第二条西巷,八日前重髹其漆。

二:张琮坐于安家席尾,进了食,自前院离去,以腰带扣磨过第三扇屏风之后,复以腕背在屏前出血,并自院中携出一件某尚不知形状之小物。

三:张琮今晨于西市署,缄一封行会函致卢仲明。

四:某须于明日上午第七刻在西市署,先于此函入档。

她将蜡板举至灯前。火舌咬住了蜡。蜡卷起,字迹消散。她看着,直至蜡盏中只余灰烬。然后她起身,摇了书案上那只小小的手铃——那是亡夫于七四五年在东市替她买的一只铜铃,所购之铺正在张琮铺东第一家,亦在北门第二条西巷——周嬷嬷捧着那张「她已隔着院墙听见了独白的大半、却无意承认」的老而平的脸进来了。

「嬷嬷。」

「娘子。」

「请人去寻慧济。在午鼓之前。告诉他,明日午鼓第三响时,我要他在安家院中,带一根牢索、一小瓶恶水油、一块净麻布,并他那本粟特入门书。」

「嬷嬷。」

「再托后巷小厮捎话与葡萄娘子。告诉她,今夜亥时,我自侧门去见她,灰衣,无马。告诉她——」她停了一停。她择了词。「——告诉她,我要她清醒。」

周嬷嬷的脸做了那种「在两句半之内婉君已将她当家这一日重组」之后惯做的、小而平的关闭百叶之态。继而又恢复整端。

「是,娘子。」

她去了。门在她身后合上。写字间外,早晨沉入长安春日上午的那种寻常细嗡,案上那盏灯——四更已点起、至今未灭——以它平稳的小小方式,对着墙烧着。

婉君第二次在案前坐下。她以那种「向自己尚未挣得开启之权的物什所致的细致敬意」之态,将那只髹漆书函匣朝自己拉近。

她未启之。

Chapter Three

The Count of One Hundred

She sat in the front court on the low cedar bench against the gallery wall, with the Bukharan screen at her right hand and the small wax tablet on her knees, and she counted, in silence, to one hundred. She did this because her father had taught her, at eleven, that the first hundred breaths in a strange room were a tax a careful witness paid to her own attention — and that those who did not pay the tax tended, later, to find their attention paid to them in coin they had not budgeted for. She counted by the small slow opening and closing of her own hands in her sleeves, and she did not, in the hundred, allow herself to think.

She allowed herself, instead, to register.

The flagstones underneath her feet were dressed limestone, laid in the year of the elder An's marriage to the patriarch's wife — there was, near the gate, a single stone with the date inscribed in small Sogdian numerals at its corner; she had read the customs petition that recorded the household's compound expansion. The stones had been swept, recently, by a careful hand. The careful hand had missed one place: at the foot of the third panel of the Bukharan screen, on the flagstone directly beneath the smear of brown, there was a fine pale dust about the size of a copper coin, the kind of dust a domestic broom shed when the broom was new. The dust had been pushed there. It had not been there yesterday afternoon, when the screen had been touched by a bleeding hand, because the bleeding hand had not bled onto the flagstone. The dust was younger than the smear. The dust was younger by a sweep.

She filed the dust.

The gallery's roof beams, painted alternating cinnabar and dark green, were laced near the front court with the soot of a brazier that had not been lit since the morning before last. A Sogdian household kept a brazier under the gallery overhang from the close of winter to the close of spring; the An household had stopped lighting theirs the day the patriarch had written Han pig on the kitchen slate. Or perhaps the morning of. She could not yet date it more precisely. She would.

The lamp at the gate had its wick removed. The bracket was empty. The brass of the bracket was, where the lamp had hung, a different colour from the brass of the bracket where it had not — a faint matte halo on the brass where the daily oil-vapour of the wick had clouded it. The halo was, she thought, exactly the size and shape of the absent wick.

The seven embroideries in the gallery — six commemorating present house-members, one for a member who had walked out — hung at intervals along the south wall in the order of their making. The empty peg was at the western end. The end nearest the main hall. A member who had walked out toward the main hall. She filed toward the hall.

A small Sogdian girl in plain unbleached cotton — a kitchen girl, she thought, not a member of the family but a household servant of perhaps fourteen — came out of the gallery and walked across the front court to the gate, carrying a covered basin in both hands. She did not look at Wanjun. She set the basin down at the inner side of the gate. She returned. The basin, by its smell as she passed Wanjun, held wash-water. The wash-water had been used to clean a body. The body had been a body whose washing required salt. Salt, she remembered from her husband's footnote on Sogdian rites — handed her over a small dinner three winters ago — was poured into the wash-water of a Zoroastrian body to drive away the small corpse-demon the religion held would otherwise infect the washer. The kitchen girl had been pressed, against custom and against her age and against her work-position, into laying out at least one of the dead.

She filed the kitchen girl. She would speak to her before noon.

At the count of seventy-two — she counted, in her sleeves, by the slow open of her right hand and the closing of her left — she heard, from the gallery, the soft step of An Naxia. He had come to a stop perhaps three paces inside the gallery's south arcade, in the shadow, where he would not be in her sight unless she turned her head. He had stood and watched her count for the last twenty-eight breaths. He had stood without moving. He had stood, she thought, in the way her father had stood at the back of his outer hall when she was small and had been allowed to listen to a deposition: a man who had decided, for whatever reason of his own, that the woman in the room was the one to whom the room currently belonged.

She did not turn her head.

She finished the hundred.

She opened her sleeve, took out the wax stylus, and wrote, in the small economical hand she used for tablets she meant to wipe before sundown, three lines.

One: the meal had been laid for seven, not six. The seventh place was at the foot of the table. The seventh place was the seat of the Han guest. The Han guest's name is Zhang.

Two: a hand with blood on it touched the third panel of the Bukharan screen. The flagstone beneath was swept after. The sweeper was not the bleeder.

Three: the wick of the threshold lamp has been removed, in the rite of a fully ended household. Datis is alive. The household is not fully ended. The wick was removed by a person who does not yet wish the household to recover.

She held the tablet on her knees for a moment. She read the three lines once. She did not, then or later in this morning, wipe them.

She slid the tablet into her sleeve and stood up.

"An gongzi."

He came forward out of the shadow. He had taken off the small bound cord that had held his hair back from his face in the dawn; the cord was in his right hand. His hair had fallen forward over his temples. He had not, in the four hours she had been in his uncle's compound, sat down.

"Lady."

"The Han guest. Tell me what your uncle was being asked to do."

He did not, this time, weigh the moment. He had — between the kitchen yard and the gallery — decided.

"My uncle," he said, "was being asked to receive consignments of uncut Khotanese stone into the An warehouse, hold them for one or two market days, and pass them on, without entering them in the household's customs ledger, to a Tibetan agent of the spring caravan."

She filed it. She filed uncut Khotanese. She filed not in the ledger. She filed Tibetan agent.

"For payment in what."

"Silver. Hexi-route silver, in ingots, bearing — by my younger cousin's report, which I have not yet verified — a frontier-army stamp."

"How many consignments."

"Three over the past nine months. The fourth was due this spring. My uncle had agreed to the first three under pressure I will, in another room, describe to you. He had refused the fourth. The fourth was the Han pig's purpose, the night before last."

"Pressure of what kind."

"The first consignment came with a letter," said An Naxia, "naming my sister An Bibi by her household. My sister is married into the household of a man whose name I will not speak in this court at this hour. The letter was a courtesy. My uncle understood the courtesy. He took the first consignment. The second came with no letter. The third came with no letter and a note of thanks. The fourth was to come with a different letter, naming a different woman of our house, and my uncle had decided — the morning he wrote Han pig on the slate — that the fourth would not come, and that he would write to my brother and to the sabao and to the Censorate, in that order, and that he would do so by the noon drum yesterday."

She listened. She let the sentence finish, and she let the silence after it settle into the shape of a sentence that had taken her witness three hours, in some inward room of his own, to decide to give her.

"And the noon drum yesterday."

"My uncle was dead by the eleventh hour of the night before last."

"Three hours after the Han pig sat down at his table."

"Yes."

"You found him."

"I did not find him. The sabao's deputy found him. I came when I was sent for."

"At what hour."

"The third hour of the afternoon."

"And the slate had not been wiped."

"The slate had not been wiped."

"Because."

He looked at her. He had — she saw it — been waiting for the question, and had not yet decided whether he would answer it.

"Because," he said, "the sabao's deputy, who is my cousin Aspand and who was here in this compound before I was, found my uncle's body at the table and went, before anyone else came, to the kitchen and read the slate, and decided he would not wipe it, and decided he would not show it to the sabao's clerks, and decided he would show it to me. I came at the third hour. He showed it to me. We decided, together, that it would not be wiped, and that the slate would be turned to the wall, and that if any Han clerk entered this kitchen before a person we trusted entered the hall, the clerk would find a slate face-down. We turned the slate this morning before you arrived."

"And the sabao."

"The sabao came at the eleventh hour of yesterday's morning. The sabao arranged for the Office of the Western Market to be inattentive until the seventh hour of tomorrow. The sabao, lady, is paying three taels for the inattention out of his own purse, against the day he can be paid back from a household that no longer has a head. He is — I do not say this as a man's nephew, lady; I say it as a man who has observed; the sabao is being a Sogdian patriarch of an old kind."

"He has not, then, sent for the Censorate."

"He has sent for you. Through Vice-Censor Pei, by way of a soliloquy. He did not send for the Censorate."

"He does not trust the Censorate."

"Lady Cui, no Sogdian household with three frontier-army silver ingots in its cellar and a Khotanese consignment unaccounted for at the spring caravan trusts the Censorate. The sabao trusts a Daoist nun under license of an abbey whose abbess is the half-sister of the Prince of Min's mother, and who once stood in the An clan's sabao-temple, fifteen years ago, in her own grey, to receive the cremated bones of my elder brother's first wife. The sabao sent for Lady Wei Wan. Lady Wei Wan sent for you."

She had not been expecting that. She filed Lady Wei Wan sent for you. The chain of summons had passed through her teacher and through Pei before it had reached her, and Pei had given her the soliloquy, and Pei had not mentioned Lady Wei Wan. The soliloquy was a Pei courtesy: he had not wanted her to think herself called by her teacher's debt rather than by her own license. The soliloquy was also a Pei caution: he had wanted, if the case went wrong, to be a man who had sent a runner and not a man who had moved a piece. She filed the cautions. She would, later, file the courtesy too.

"An gongzi."

"Lady."

"You are telling me the truth."

"In the parts I am telling you, yes."

"The parts you are not telling me."

"Concern my sister."

"I will not ask about your sister."

"Thank you."

"Not yet."

He bowed his head a degree, in the small acknowledgement of a man receiving the proper Tang for I will not ask now, I will ask later. He had, she saw, the syntax of a man who had been raised in two registers. He could hear what she had said and what she had implied at the same time. That was either a gift of his tutor's making or a habit of his life's. Either way, she filed it.

"The Tibetan agent of the spring caravan."

"Has not yet come. The fourth consignment was the offer. The Tibetan was to come ten days hence."

"You will be there."

"Lady?"

"You will be there, an gongzi, in your house in mourning white, ten days hence, when the Tibetan comes to receive a consignment that no longer exists. You will receive him courteously. You will tell him your uncle is dead. You will note, very precisely, his face, his name, his clothing, his retainers, and the route by which he leaves. You will, before he leaves, decline, politely, to give him the consignment. You will not tell him why. You will not tell him you have spoken to me. You will not tell him that the matter is closed. You will tell him to come back in twenty days."

He listened.

"You wish me," he said, "to set bait for him."

"I wish you to count him."

"Twenty days will bring him back inside the second drum-cycle of the case."

"Twenty days will bring him back at a moment when the case will be officially closed, on the public record, by the arrest of a Manichaean lay cell. You will say, then, that the consignment was lost in the disturbance. He will believe you. He will not believe you for long. He will return a third time. The third time he will bring a man we will want to see."

"Lady Cui."

"An gongzi."

"You are constructing your case nine days before the case will be closed."

"I am constructing my case before I have it. It is a habit I learned from my father, who said it was the only way to be sure that, when the case arrived, one had the right shaped basket for it."

He looked at her again. She was not yet sure what he was seeing. She filed the look.

"I will be at the gate ten days hence," he said, "and I will count him."

"Good."

She walked, without further comment, to the third panel of the Bukharan screen.

She did not, this time, sit down. She stood at perhaps three feet's distance and looked at the painting. The hunt in the screen was, by Sasanian convention, a metaphor for the kingly virtues; the antelopes were the prey of the soul, the riders were the appetites of the king. She had read a Persian treatise on the iconography, in translation, in a sealed corner of her late husband's library. She did not look at the iconography. She looked at the smear.

The smear ran downward in the shape, as she had registered from the saddle, of a wrist drawn slowly downward. It was, in the closer view, in two parts: a long thin downward streak, the print of the back of a wrist running against a vertical surface, and at the bottom of the streak a small round flake — a single droplet that had fallen from a higher position, where the wrist had paused, and had dried at the lower margin of the streak. The droplet was old enough to be brown but young enough to retain its meniscus at the edge: it had dried, she thought, between the eleventh hour of two nights ago and the second hour of yesterday morning. Twelve hours, give or take.

She took out the wax tablet and drew, in two strokes, the streak and the droplet.

The streak was at the height of her shoulder. The painter, at the time of the painting, had been a Bukharan court craftsman whose name was on the brass tag at the screen's western edge — Ardashir, son of Hormizd, in the Persian year that corresponded to the Tang Tianbao third. Sixty-five inches: she measured by the eye she had trained, at her father's elbow, on doorframes and on coffins. The wrist that had brushed the panel had been the wrist of a man perhaps two finger-widths shorter than the average Sogdian male. Or it had been the wrist of a tall woman.

A woman would not, in this household, in any ordinary moment, have leaned her bleeding wrist against the third panel of the painted Bukharan screen the youngest An wife used for hanging her linen. A woman of this household would have, even in the moment of dying, kept her shoulder off the painted silk of the screen. The screen was a thing this household kept its bodies away from. She filed the household decorum. The wrist had been a man's.

A man two finger-widths shorter than the average Sogdian was, in Chang'an, almost certainly Han. She did not require almost. She required, on a wax tablet she would copy onto silk by tomorrow night, the shape of the deduction. She wrote, beside the small sketch of the smear, Han male. She did not write Zhang.

She walked around the screen to its rear.

The rear of the screen was unpainted brown silk on stretched lacquered wood. The wood was clean. The silk was clean. The lacquer at the third panel's rear bore — at exactly the level of her own waist, in the small subtle scuff that a man's belt-buckle made when the man had stood close enough behind the screen to brush it — a thin horizontal scratch, the length of her thumb, raw and pale in the dark lacquer.

The man with blood on his wrist had stood behind the screen for some part of the night before last.

He had stood with his back to the screen — buckle-side — facing the gallery side of the front court. He had stood there long enough to brush the lacquer with his belt. He had not stood there long enough to wear the scuff deeper than a thumb's length. Perhaps a quarter of an hour. Perhaps less. He had then come around the screen — to its front, to its painted face — and, dizzy or bleeding or both, had braced himself with the back of his wrist against the third panel, and the wrist had been bleeding, and a drop had fallen, and he had walked on.

In which direction had he walked.

She walked to the front of the screen again. She looked at the angle of the smear. The streak was vertical; the streak did not, by itself, indicate a direction. The droplet, however, had fallen straight down from the wrist; the droplet's small edge — where the meniscus had set — was very faintly elongated in the direction the wrist had then moved. The elongation was, she thought, toward the gate.

He had walked toward the gate. He had been bleeding. He had been carrying — she thought, but did not yet write — a small object in his other hand: there was no second smear, no second print, anywhere on the screen, and a bleeding man who used both hands to brace himself dripped from both wrists. He had used only one. The other hand had been carrying.

She wrote, beside Han male, carried something out.

She turned. She stood, between the screen and the gallery, and surveyed the front court as he would have surveyed it, in his dizzy moment, before walking. The gate was directly opposite the gallery's south arcade. The gate was, from his standing point, about fifteen paces. The boy at the gate stall would not have been there at the night hour the man had been bleeding. The threshold lamp would have been lit. The household, two hours after the dinner, would have been — by her arithmetic of gelsemium dosage — in the early respiratory stage of a slow collapse: not yet dead, no longer mobile, settled at their cushions in the false sleep the poison engineered. The Bukharan screen would have been between the dying men at the table and the bleeding man at the gate.

The screen had been a thing he had hidden behind.

She filed the screen as a hiding place.

"An gongzi."

"Lady."

"The youngest An wife. Did she sleep, the night before last, in the chamber above the gallery, on the gallery's north side."

"Yes."

"Above the painted screen."

"Yes."

"At what hour did she come down to dinner."

"She did not. She was unwell. She had taken her dinner in her chamber. She was at the second window above us when the sabao's deputy entered the compound at the third hour of yesterday afternoon."

"She was at the window the whole night."

"She — Lady Cui."

"At the whole night."

He looked at her. The look this time was not the careful nothing, nor the small upgrade of her in his mind, nor the acknowledgement that he had heard her thinking faster than he had been trained to hear a woman think. The look was — and she filed it carefully because it was important — the small inward recognition of a man who had been about to lie and had decided not to.

"My uncle's youngest wife was at the window for some part of the evening," he said. "I do not know what part. She was asleep when the sabao's deputy arrived. She is asleep now, by her own choice, in the apartments behind the fire-temple, where she was taken by my cousin Aspand at the fourth hour of yesterday afternoon, before the sabao came. She slept the day. She woke at dusk. She will not speak of what she saw."

"To you."

"To anyone. To me. To the sabao. To my aunt Datis."

"To me."

He thought about this. He did not answer immediately. She watched him think. She was not, on the whole, in the habit of letting witnesses think; her father had taught her that letting a witness think was letting a witness lie. She let An Naxia think. She let him think because she had decided, between the kitchen yard and the screen, that he was not the witness; he was the broker.

"To you," he said. "Perhaps. If you sit with her, in her aunt's apartment, in your grey, with the fire-temple wall between you and the city. She will not speak to a man. She might speak to a woman. She might speak to a Daoist nun if the Daoist nun is the woman of whom her dead father-in-law has written, six months ago, in his ledger. I will arrange it."

She inclined her head.

"Then," she said, "I will see her, in the apartments behind the fire-temple, this afternoon."

"This afternoon," he agreed.

She walked back toward the bench against the gallery wall. She did not sit. The morning was past the second drum-cycle now; the hour had thickened, and the small busy noises of a city waking had begun, somewhere beyond the high blank walls, to make themselves heard. A man was shouting, somewhere east, about a barrel of pickled fish. A woman was scolding a child. A camel — perhaps the same camel — groaned again, but more briefly, as if to test the air. The compound was very quiet inside its walls. The kitchen girl crossed the front court again with a covered basin; she did not look at Wanjun this time either, but the way she did not look had a different shape from the first crossing. She had been told, between crossings, who Wanjun was.

Wanjun stopped at the corner of the gallery. She turned.

"An gongzi," she said. "I will be paid."

"Yes."

"Khotanese jade, one piece, of cut grade, to be held in escrow with the sabao until the case closes. Standard fee for an investigation under religious cover."

"Yes."

"And."

"Lady."

"And I will see your aunt Datis this afternoon, the youngest An wife also this afternoon if she will see me, the kitchen girl now, and the sabao himself before I leave this compound this morning. I will come back to this house at the noon drum tomorrow to walk the kitchen storeroom, the spice-warehouse and the well with Brother Hui at my elbow; you will arrange a Sogdian translator if the kitchen girl will not speak Tang; the sabao's deputy will deny the Office of the Western Market entry to this compound until I have walked it twice; you will not, before I have walked it twice, allow the bodies to be removed from the hall. The bodies will be cold by tomorrow; that is acceptable for my purposes; I will not require — you will be relieved to hear — that they be kept warm. The hall will be locked. The keys will be held by the sabao, by Aspand, and by you. Not by me. The keys are not, for the moment, my problem."

He listened. She paused. She added, in the small dry voice she used when she was about to say a thing she was not yet sure she was permitted to say:

"And the gate-lamp at the threshold. Have the wick replaced this evening."

He looked at her.

"Lady Cui."

"It does not lie to your god to keep the flame at the lamp while one woman of the household is still alive. It tells the household's enemy that the household is not, after all, fully ended. It tells the household's enemy that we have noticed his courtesy. He took the wick. We will put it back."

"Datis is alive."

"Datis is alive. Put the flame back tonight, at dusk, for Datis. Light it from a brand at the sabao-temple, not from a brand of this house. Do it in front of the kitchen girl."

He did not, for a long beat, speak. The small unconscious habit of his right hand — riding a fraction higher than his left, where the absent swordbelt had been — closed and opened, once, at his side.

"Yes," he said. "Lady Cui."

She walked across the front court. She walked past the screen with its mended composure. She walked under the threshold lamp with its absent wick. She came to the gate, and at the gate Roshan the sabao was waiting for her — he had heard her voice, or had decided not to be elsewhere when she emerged; she did not yet know which — and he stood with his ceremonial futou very straight on his old head and his hands folded inside his sleeves.

"Sabao."

"Lady."

"Will you walk with me to the corner of the street."

He bowed. He turned. He preceded her — the courtesy of an elder to a younger — through the small private gate, three paces forward, and they stood together at the corner of the lane and the inner street of Liquan. The inner street had begun to be a street again. A water-seller had set down his pole twenty paces away and was, with the methodical patience of his trade, slopping his ladle into the courtyard pots that were left out for him at every fifth door. The water-seller did not look at them. The water-seller had been looking at the An gate for two days. He would not, today, be paid for looking.

"Sabao."

"Lady Cui."

"You said three taels."

"Three taels."

"The Office's deputy is one of two clerks who, in the last fourteen months, has accepted gifts at the An gate. The other, I think, is a junior recorder named Cao. Cao took half a tael in winter, on a manifest correction; the deputy took three. The deputy is the senior. The deputy has only one principal."

The old man looked at her sidelong.

"You have read our customs filings."

"I have read your customs filings, and the Office's tax ledger for the last three years, and the Censorate's rotation roster for the same period, in the days when my late husband was alive. The deputy was bribed yesterday by a clerk of a Han merchant. The clerk's master is the master who sat at your brother's table the night of the dinner. The clerk's master paid not because his name was on the slate — he did not yet know his name was on the slate — but because three taels was the standing price he paid the Office to keep his name off the Office's daily inquiry list. He had been paying that price every market-day for, I would say, a year and a half."

"Lady Cui."

"You have known this."

"I have suspected this."

"And you have not, until this morning, decided to do anything about it."

"Lady Cui."

"Sabao."

"I have," said the old man, very quietly, "been alive in this city for fifty-seven years. The last twenty of them I have been sabao of the second-ranking trade-house of the second-ranking community of foreigners in the largest city the world has built. I am not a man who has spent his life not knowing. I am a man who has spent his life choosing the small precise moments in which to admit, in another man's hearing, the thing he has known. This morning, in your hearing, is one of those moments. There will not be many more. I am, as I told you on the threshold, old."

She looked at him. He was a small straight man with a grey beard and an old straight back, and he had buried twelve members of his community in the smallpox of 745, and two children of his own marriage in the same year, and he was, on this morning of his brother's death, conducting a transaction in the standing currency of an old caution. She did not, in the small private room she kept for such currencies, hold his caution against him.

"Sabao."

"Lady."

"I will need, from you, three names. The Office's deputy. The junior recorder Cao. And the Han merchant of the Eastern Market whose clerk has, every market-day for the last eighteen months, been paying your Office to overlook him."

"You know the third name."

"I know the clan."

"The third name," said the sabao, in the level Tang of a man who had decided, at his age and on his own terms, that he would in this moment risk the inconvenience of having spoken, "is Zhang Cong. He has a silk shop on the second turning west of the Eastern Market north gate. He has a small private cellar entered through a moved floor-loom. He has seven doors between the street and his own desk. He paid for his lacquer to be redone eight days ago by a Henanese journeyman whose name I will, before noon, send to you. He paid the Office's deputy in this matter three taels, and he paid the Office's deputy in a previous matter, eleven days ago, five. The previous matter, I think — I cannot be sure; I am informing you that I cannot be sure — was the matter of arranging that a kitchen girl from a Sogdian household should be conveniently mislaid in a willow grove at Bashang. The kitchen girl has not yet been mislaid. Whether she will be mislaid before you are paid your jade, lady, is a question for which I do not yet have the answer."

She filed it. She filed all of it. She filed Zhang Cong, the silk shop, the moved floor-loom, the seven doors, the lacquer redone eight days ago, the journeyman from Henan, the three taels and the five taels and the kitchen girl in the willow grove who had not yet been mislaid. She filed the sabao's small precise courage. She filed his face. She filed, in the same small private room, the door behind which she had put, half an hour ago in the kitchen, the eight characters on the slate. The room was, after the sabao's sentence, much more crowded than it had been an hour before.

She bowed.

"Sabao," she said. "I will be back at the noon drum tomorrow with Brother Hui. I will require, by the noon drum tomorrow, that you have done two things. One: that the lamp at this gate be lit at dusk tonight by a brand from your fire-temple. Two: that no man, no woman, no child, no clerk, no Censorate deputy and no Office of the Western Market deputy be admitted into this compound, on any pretext, by anyone, until I am again standing at this gate."

"Yes."

"I will say it again because I will need you not to think about it. No one. Not Aspand. Not your wife. Not your sister. Not the priest of the fire-temple. No one. Aspand and the priest of the fire-temple may stand at the gate. They may not enter. The dead are not yours to mourn yet. They are mine to read."

He looked at her with an expression of a kind she had not, in eighteen months, been looked at with.

"Lady Cui," he said. "I will keep your hall."

She did not, in the lane outside Liquan, allow herself to be moved by the sabao's sentence. She filed it. She bowed once more. She turned. She walked back to the gate. She did not look at the screen, or the empty peg, or the threshold lamp, or An Naxia, who had remained inside the front court and had stepped aside, when she came through the gate, with the courtesy of a man getting out of her way as he might have gotten out of the way of a magistrate.

The mare was at the gate with the boy. The boy gave her a leg up. She settled herself.

"An gongzi."

"Lady."

"This afternoon."

"This afternoon."

"At the apartments behind the fire-temple."

"At the apartments behind the fire-temple."

"Have your aunt Datis decide whether she will see me before I arrive. I would prefer not to surprise an old woman in her own mourning."

"Yes."

"And."

"Lady."

"I will not, at the gate of this house, ask you, in the hearing of the gate-boy, whether your sister An Bibi is well. I will, however, expect that, at the apartments behind the fire-temple this afternoon, you will tell me, on your own initiative, why your sister An Bibi's name is one I will, eventually, need to know."

He bowed his head. He did not promise. He did not refuse. He inclined the eighth of an inch that meant, in the Tang of a man educated by both a Sogdian mother and a Han tutor, I have heard you and I will think about it. She filed the inclination. She turned the mare. The mare, at her hand, went out into the lane.

Aspand walked beside the mare to the ward gate. He did not speak. He did not need to speak. At the ward gate he stepped aside, and she rode out, alone, into the inner streets of Liquan as they began to be streets again. The water-seller had moved on; a noodle-seller had set up two doors down with a small charcoal brazier and a steaming kettle; somewhere east, in the long row of Sogdian wineshops that lined the spice-row, a shutter was opening for the day. The morning had become, all around her, an ordinary spring morning in the Western quadrant of the largest city in the world. She rode through it. She rode east through it, toward Yongchong. She rode at the slow walk of a woman in no hurry.

She thought, as she rode, about the seven doors. She thought about the lacquer redone eight days ago. She thought about the small round flake of brown at the level of the painted antelope's neck. She thought about the kitchen girl who had been carrying the body-water. She thought about the empty peg at the end of the gallery, which she had filed at the count of forty-three and which she had not yet asked An Naxia about, because she had decided that asking him at the gate would have given him the choice of two answers and asking him this afternoon, in the apartments behind the fire-temple, beside his living aunt, would give him only one.

She thought, at the corner of Vermilion-Bird and the avenue, about the lacquered letter-box on her desk in Yongchong, and about the list of names her husband had not yet shown her, and about the eight characters on the slate, and about the Han clan of two thousand households in Chang'an alone, of whom one — possibly one — had today acquired a face and a shop and a redone lacquer.

She did not, this morning, ride home through Pingkang. Madam Khorshid would be sleeping. She would, in the late afternoon, go to Madam Khorshid. By the late afternoon she would know what to ask.

She rode past the Drum Tower at the third hour of the morning. The drum did not sound. The drum was at rest until the noon-drum's first call. The Drum-keeper, sitting in his small wooden booth at the foot of the tower, looked at her without expression as she passed. He had a long thin face she had not, before this morning, ever paid attention to. She paid attention to him this morning. She filed his face. She rode on.

By the time she reached the gate of Yongchong, Nanny Zhou was waiting at the inner threshold of the kitchen door, and the gate-boy had the bar half-raised before she came in sight, and the small dark shape of a runner — not the runner of last night; an older man, in the dun-grey of a Pei runner with the older insignia at the cuff — was waiting at the inside of her gate with both hands folded inside his sleeves.

She rode through. The bar dropped behind her. The runner bowed.

"My lord has been observing aloud, mistress."

"At this hour."

"At this hour."

"Then come in," she said.

She dismounted. She let the boy take the mare. She walked, in her grey, past the runner and across the courtyard to her writing-room, and she filed, as she crossed the threshold, the small unmistakable fact that Pei had sent a second runner before she had returned home and before, by the standing arrangement of soliloquies, she had given him reason to send one. Pei had sent the second runner because something had happened in the city, between dawn and the third hour of the morning, that Pei wanted her to know before she had finished thinking about the An compound. Pei was not a man who interrupted a thought. Pei was a man who, when he interrupted a thought, did so because the next thought was now the load-bearing one.

She sat down at her writing-desk. She did not unbar her sleeve. She did not yet take out the wax tablet on which she had drawn the streak on the screen.

"Speak," she said. "The soliloquy."

The older runner cleared his throat. He was perhaps forty, with a small grizzled beard and the careful close-cropped Tang of a man who had been in Pei's service for fifteen years.

"My lord observes," he said, "that the senior clerk of the Office of the Western Market, in the matter of the An household, sent at the first hour of this morning a junior recorder to the lacquer shop of one Zhang Cong of the Eastern Market, by the second turning west of the north gate. My lord observes that the junior recorder was seen to enter the lacquer shop and to leave it at the second hour, carrying a sealed slip in his sleeve. My lord observes that the sealed slip, by the small wax-print on the seal, bears the device of the Han silk-merchants' guild. My lord observes that this device, by long standing custom, is used only on letters internal to the guild. My lord observes that a letter internal to the guild, sealed in the Office of the Western Market and carried by a junior recorder, is a letter that has been laundered, in transit, from a thing it was not into a thing it now appears to be. My lord observes that the letter was, by my lord's quietest of inquiries, addressed to a senior censor at the Censorate, by name, by sealed cover. My lord observes" — and here the runner paused in the old Pei way — "that the senior censor named on the cover is Censor Lu Zhongming."

She sat very still.

"He is laying his trail," she said, aloud, to the runner. The runner, who was not paid to acknowledge a soliloquy, kept his eyes on the floor.

She thought, in the small hot still way she always thought when she had been moved. Zhang Cong had, in the space of three hours between her dismount in Liquan Ward and her return to Yongchong, opened a private channel into the Censorate by way of a clerk who would, by the seventh hour of tomorrow, be sworn to the integrity of the channel. He was preparing the man at the Censorate end of the channel — Censor Lu Zhongming, her late husband's procedural rival — to receive a version of the An household deaths that suited him. He had begun the laundry. He had begun it without yet knowing she had been in the front court of the An compound at the second drum of the morning, and without yet knowing that the sabao would, at dusk tonight, restore the wick of the gate lamp in front of the kitchen girl, and without yet knowing — by her count — that there were seven embroideries in the gallery and not six, that there had been seven places at the table and not six, that he had brushed the lacquer on the rear of a Bukharan screen with a belt-buckle and a wrist with blood on it.

He would learn these things by tomorrow.

She had perhaps eighteen hours.

She took out the wax tablet, wiped from it the three lines of her count of one hundred, and wrote, in their place, four.

One: Zhang Cong, Eastern Market silk-merchant, second turning west of the north gate, lacquer redone eight days ago.

Two: Zhang Cong sat at the foot of the An table, ate, left through the front court, brushed his belt against the rear of the third screen-panel, bled at his wrist on the front, and carried out of the compound a small object I do not yet know the shape of.

Three: Zhang Cong this morning sealed a guild-letter to Lu Zhongming through the Office of the Western Market.

Four: I will need to be at the Office of the Western Market tomorrow morning at the seventh hour, before the letter can be filed.

She held the tablet to the lamp. The flame caught the wax. The wax curled and the lines vanished. She watched until the bowl was only ash. Then she stood, and she rang the small handbell on the desk — the bell her husband had bought for her in the Eastern Market, in 745, in the lacquer shop one shop east of Zhang Cong's, on the second turning west of the north gate — and Nanny Zhou came in with the small old face that meant Nanny had heard most of the soliloquy through the courtyard wall and had no intention of admitting it.

"Nanny."

"Mistress."

"Send for Brother Hui. Before the noon drum. Tell him I will need him at the An compound tomorrow at the noon drum's third call, with a strong rope, a small flask of eshu oil, a clean linen, and his Sogdian primer."

"Mistress."

"And send word, by the back-lane boy, to Madam Khorshid. Tell her I will come to her at the seventh hour tonight, at her side door, in my grey, without a horse. Tell her — " She paused. She chose. " — tell her I will need her to be sober."

Nanny Zhou's face did the small flat closing-of-shutters movement it did when, in two and a half sentences, Wanjun had reorganised her household's day. Then it composed itself.

"Yes, mistress."

She went. The door closed behind her. The morning, beyond the writing-room, settled into the small ordinary hum of a Chang'an spring forenoon, and the lamp on the desk, which had been lit at the fourth watch and not yet put out, burned in its level small way against the wall.

Wanjun sat down at her desk for the second time. She drew toward her, with the very careful courtesy a woman extends to an object she has not yet earned the right to open, the lacquered letter-box.

She did not open it.

She put her hand flat on the lid, and she sat there, very still, while the morning that had begun in a courtyard of seven dead in a Sogdian house in Liquan Ward came around her like the small high quiet rooms of a memory palace whose corridor she had finally found.

Three weeks ago, her husband had been a name on his own headstone, eighteen months silent, and the lid of the box had been an unopened question. This morning the box was still unopened. The headstone was still in Hexi. But her husband, by the eight characters on a Sogdian kitchen slate and by a name she now had a shape for, had begun, very faintly, to be a witness she could ask a question.

She would ask him, eventually, the question.

She did not, this morning, lift her hand.

The lamp on the desk burned in its level small way. Outside her courtyard, in the long quiet alley that ran behind the houses of Yongchong, the small dry sound of a man clearing his throat — a different man from the man of last night, but a man, and clearing his throat in the way her father's clerks had done in the moments before stepping forward to be noticed — let her know, without her needing to turn her head, that someone had taken up the post the Gold Bird guardsman had abandoned at the fourth watch.

She filed the sound. She added it to the room she kept for sounds of men outside walls.

The room was already crowded.
